Movie Tuesday: The Five Scariest Movies of All-Time (That You’ve Seen, Obviously)
Uncategorized June 19th. 2007, 5:57pm
Before you even look at this list, please take this into consideration: as cultured as we are, we haven’t seen too many foreign films in the last few years. We hear they are the most terrifying. Also, we have not seen Hostel. Lastly, we never saw Potergeist and The Shining until our late teens, at which point they weren’t all that scary.Next issue: what exactly constitutes scary? Silence of the Lambs? We were on the edge of our seat throughout, but more out of excitement than fear. Jaws is one of the greatest movies in the history of cinema, yet we’ve seen it so many times that we’re desensitized to the fright. Our Top 5 are below, and we added a few honorable mentions. Rip on, folks. Just remember to offer your Top 5.
TBL
Blair Witch Project – Probably the scariest ending in movie history.
Open Water – It’s why we’re off the ocean.
Saw – Gross.
Exorcist – Yikes.
Candyman – The bees!
Honorable mention: Children of the Corn, Seven, Jaws
TBL 2
Friday the 13th
Nightmare on Elm Street
Halloween
Exorcist
Poltergeist
Honorable Mention: The Shining, Psycho, Blair Witch

I hate scary movies, they bore me to tears, and I rarely, rarely end up scared. I just don’t find them entertaining at all, or scary, or fun. I hate horror flicks.
Event Horizon freaked me out (so did Poltergeist II, but I was about 8 years old). That movie is hella scary.
June 19th, 2007 at 6:04 PM
The first Hellraiser. That box freaked the fuck outta us.
June 19th, 2007 at 6:06 PM
1. The Exorcist
2. IT (fucking clowns!)
3. Psycho
4. The Tenant
5. The Thing
June 19th, 2007 at 6:07 PM
Another sucky list. Blair Witch revolved around four words the entire movie…….”where’s the f*cking map”. Open Water involved two people arguing the entire time. Annoying – yes. Scary – hell no.
June 19th, 2007 at 6:11 PM
The first Halloween was scary without the gore, a big difference.
During the early scene of Jamie Lee Curtis walking home from school, while “Dont Fear the Reaper” plays in the background, very cool.
Poltergeist with old dude, “Your all gonna die” flips me out everytime.
Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, and the Shining would round out my top 5.
June 19th, 2007 at 6:11 PM
Blair Witch is a polarizing movie to say the least, but I consider it the scariest I’ve ever seen, too.
June 19th, 2007 at 6:11 PM
Two in particular stand out to me: The Shining and The Omen. The Ring was pretty creepy too, with the added benefit of having Naomi Watts (who was a slightly more attractive female protagonist than Shelly Duval in The Shining).
June 19th, 2007 at 6:14 PM
I agree with Blair Witch – probably the only movie I’ve seen as an adult that actually gave me goosebumps (and then only at the end).
However, as the youngest of three siblings I did see a lot of movies well before the age that I should have. And some freaked me out. Two that I won’t watch to this day (even though I’m sure they wouldn’t scare me now):
The Hitcher (the original)
Clockwork Orange (I can still picture the gang beating up that homeless guy)
June 19th, 2007 at 6:18 PM
1. Exorcist – No explanation needed.
2. The Shining – watch it with a girl and I guarantee you get laid, unless its your sister.
3. Halloween – The music, yo
4. Dawn of the Dead – The Original
5. The Thing (1982) – Kurt Russell on Ice
June 19th, 2007 at 6:20 PM
I wet myself during each of these:
1. Gigli
2. From Justin to Kelly
3. Arthur 2: On the Rocks
4. Battlefield Earth
5. Cool as Ice
June 19th, 2007 at 6:21 PM
“Night of the Living Dead” and the Original “Friday the 13th” were amongst my favorite fright night flicks.
June 19th, 2007 at 6:26 PM
Everyone knows Silent Night Deadly Night: 2 is the scariest movie of all time.

Blair Witch’s impact depended on when you saw it. I saw it during its opening week – pre-hype – and was scared. If you waited too long and the hype was too built up (and the plotlines revealed by friends/media), you were disappointed.
1. The Shining
2. The Exorcist
3. Blair Witch
4. Poltergeist
5. Silence of the Lambs
June 19th, 2007 at 6:27 PM
It wasn’t scary, but it was edge-of-your-seat the entire time: The Descent.
June 19th, 2007 at 6:29 PM
If I watch scary movies at the theatre..I get scarred easily
Scary movies at home….not so much
1. The Ring
2. Aracnaphobia (Saw it when I was 8, spiders still creep me out – I’m 25)
3. Exorcist
4. Saw
5. Nightmare on Elm Street (Again, saw it when I was a kid)
June 19th, 2007 at 6:32 PM
Event Horizon
June 19th, 2007 at 6:39 PM
Never will forget the abject horror i felt when the girl was yelling for her friend, and he was standing in the corner facing the wall …. and then she gets knocked to the ground and the camera goes sideways.
Theater was packed, I swear nobody moved for at least five seconds. Just stunned. This was the second weekend in opened, I think. And I also remember skipping a block party to go see the movie.
June 19th, 2007 at 6:40 PM
The original 1974 version of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre still sends a chills up my spine.
June 19th, 2007 at 6:42 PM
I am not scared when I watch movies. However, these movies startled me and made me look over my shoulder.
1) The Shinning
2) Saw III
3) Children Under the Stairs – dope ass movie
4) Ring I
5) Mr. Brooks – I couldn’t think of any other ones and this was the most recent movie that made me jump even a little. Not scary but has it’s moments that catch you off guard.

The original 1974 version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre still sends chills down my spine.
June 19th, 2007 at 6:58 PM
Open Water? Come on. Who wasn’t rooting for the sharks?
June 19th, 2007 at 7:01 PM
I’m probably alone in thinking this, but The Skeleton Key freaked me out big-time. Definitely scarier than Hostel, the Saw series, or pretty much any movie I’ve seen since The Exorcist.
June 19th, 2007 at 7:10 PM
How did everyone miss “Alien”?
June 19th, 2007 at 7:12 PM
I know I saw this movie when I was about 6 or 7, but I refused to watch the one that came out a couple years ago because this one gave me the creeps, swear to God:
Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Re: Open Water… after the chick got naked in the room, I was ready for some shark eating on humans. What an annoying movie. Nothing ever happened. By the time Slick died and then sweet thing decided to go under, I was like, “They should have just done that 45 minutes ago.”
That movie had a great premise, but was poorly executed.
Blair Witch Project… First movie to incorporate the web as a marketing tool into the movie. Funny how it was the biggest hype movie that year and was well liked until the inevitable backlash happened. The thing against that movie is that it is totally uninteresting on repeat viewings. Good horror films you can watch again and again. BWP gets an unfair rap in my opinion. Great ending.
June 19th, 2007 at 7:19 PM
During the early scene of Jamie Lee Curtis walking home from school, while “Dont Fear the Reaper†plays in the background, very cool.
Actually, “Don’t Fear the Reaper” was on in the car when she was driving with her slutty friend, not when she was walking home. I’m impressed with the love for Open Water and Blair Witch, two of my favorites.
1. Halloween (I still think it’s the best slasher movie of all time, with the best music, best leading lady, and best mask)
2. Blair Witch (if you let yourself get immersed, it’s pretty intense)
3. Descent (good call, BSanders; maybe it’s because I’m claustrophobic, but I thought it was scary as hell, gory as hell, and outstanding; the UK ending was by far better than the U.S. ending, though)
4. Open Water (I’m terrified of sharks)
5. The Shining (yes, tame by today’s standards, but scared the living hell out of me back in the day)
Best non-scary “horror” movie: Jaws
June 19th, 2007 at 7:38 PM
Henry – Portriat of a Serial Killer – scary in that it is almost totally realistic, and depraved as well.
Rawhead Rex of all things scared me as a kid…
June 19th, 2007 at 7:42 PM
The first “Pet Sematary” movie effed me up.
June 19th, 2007 at 7:44 PM
Poltergeist
Tourist Trap (freaky old drive-in flick, creeped me out)
Alien
Exorcist…I’m Catholic…
June 19th, 2007 at 7:47 PM
I think some of you are getting “scary” movies confused with “thrillers.” Arachnophobia and Silence of the Lambs are definitely thrillers, whereas the Shining and Hellraiser are horror or scary movies. Oh yeah and Open Water just sucks; I’m surprised they made a sequel. Here’s a list, in no particular order. ( I have no shame)
Hellraiser
The Watcher in the Woods
Children of the Corn
The People Under the Stairs (good call Mozzata)
Def by Temptation
It (if this is the movie where the thing is frozen in Antartica and it then gets in the dog and starts killing people)
The Tommyknockers
June 19th, 2007 at 7:48 PM
Oh yeah and:
Pumpkin Head
June 19th, 2007 at 7:49 PM
1) Silence of the Lambs
2) Shining
3) Misery (underrated classic)
4) The Omen (original version)
5) Psycho (original version) – not “scary” by today’s standards, but way ahead of it’s time.
Honorable mention – The Ring, Rear Window, and Halloween
June 19th, 2007 at 7:50 PM
Another honorable mention to People Under the Stairs.
June 19th, 2007 at 7:52 PM
Bad Kermit – You are correct.
“Reaper” was on the radio.
I can barely remember what I did for lunch, but somehow remember what song was playing in a movie 30 years ago.

Wait Until Dark with Audrey Hepburn
June 19th, 2007 at 8:00 PM
‘Saw’ was crazy as hell scary.
June 19th, 2007 at 8:01 PM
Oh, man. GREAT recommendation, David. “Wait Until Dark” was like the basement scene from “Silence of the Lambs” for an hour and a half straight, and it had Alan Arkin in it. Scary and great.
Oh, and Jemmitt, that’s not “It.” That’s Carpenter’s “The Thing.” “It” involved a scary clown, Jack Tripper, and a giant spider.
June 19th, 2007 at 8:06 PM
28 days later was pretty damn frightening, if you ask me.
June 19th, 2007 at 8:06 PM
Saw was more freaky than scary to me (and I’m a wuss). Mine have to be….
1. The Ring
2. The Descent
3. Nightmare on Elm Street 3 (saw it when I was 7)
4. Blair Witch
5. Original Omen
As far as Blair Witch….I saw it before it came out that it was fake at this old theatre in Baltimore. We came out of the theatre and there was a pile of f’ing rocks in front of my car. We didn’t go with anyone else and there were 20 other cars in the lot.
Still freaks me out.
June 19th, 2007 at 8:07 PM
Thanks Bad Kermit
I’d also like to second the Pet Sematary entry.
And submit–Stigmata and Gothika(not really scary, but puts you on edge)
June 19th, 2007 at 8:12 PM
Open Water? I’m done acknowledging these movie posts.
Besides, Eraser is on.
June 19th, 2007 at 8:16 PM
Killers Clowns from outerspace (still gives me nightmares)
Ghoulies.. i couldnt take a dump for a week bc i thought they might get me !
June 19th, 2007 at 8:18 PM
Open Water was absolutely annoying.
The Blair With Project just gave me a headache due to the shaking of the camera. The ending was idiotic and not even kind of scary.
Saw was the most boring movie I have ever seen. Ernest Goes to Camp was scarier than that movie.
June 19th, 2007 at 9:02 PM
WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!
THE ORIGINAL CHAIN SAW MASSACRE IS ALL TIME SCARIEST
June 19th, 2007 at 9:09 PM
Scariest Movie of all time –
Fatal Attraction
June 19th, 2007 at 9:34 PM
It Ate Everything
June 19th, 2007 at 9:48 PM
The original “Mummy” scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. Another one that freaked me out was “Them”, the movie about the giant ants. As an adult, I’ll put “Blair Witch”, “Shallow Grave”, and “The Exorcist” on my list.
June 19th, 2007 at 10:14 PM
The first half hour of ‘Jeepers Creepers’ is kinda freaky, and then it very quickly goes downhill. The second one is terrible, as well.
June 19th, 2007 at 11:28 PM
1) Steele – Shaquille takes chainsaw to script.
2) Space Jam – Jordan out acted by Bugs
3) Amazing Grace and Chuck – Alex English is horrifying as a Celtic
4) Bad as I Wanna Be: The Dennis Rodman Story – ‘nough said, self acted.
5) Any movie with a former actor as a serious lead.
June 19th, 2007 at 11:36 PM
I’m not big on scary movies so I haven’t seen many, but The Exorcist takes 1st through 10th on my list. Doubt I’ll ever watch that again, it gave me the heebie jeebies so bad.
June 20th, 2007 at 12:24 AM
My top 5:
1)The Exorcist (My parents STILL won’t watch this movie)
2)The Omen (The original)
3)Nightmare on Elm Street
4)Halloween
5)The Ring
Honorable Mention: Misery, The Thing, Alien, Seven, Hellraiser
BTW, gotta give props to “rd” on Rawhead Rex. I though I was the only person who on earth who has seen that movie!
June 20th, 2007 at 12:26 AM
Ditto on “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”
June 20th, 2007 at 9:28 AM
I was wondering when I’d see a mention of Killer Clowns from Outer Space. Sure I was only 6 but I haven’t been to a circus since because of that movie and because of “It.”
Poltergeist (Original), 28 Days Later, and Slugs (no plot, terrible acting, greg brady as a hero, but jesus were the scenes where the slugs killed people absolutely horrifying) round out my top 5
June 20th, 2007 at 12:08 PM
You have to see Hostel…easily makes top 5 just for the fact that it could really happen. Lived over sees for a while and totally see it happening, just on pure hate of americans it could happen.
June 20th, 2007 at 1:03 PM
Open Water? Seriously? That movie was boring as hell.
June 20th, 2007 at 2:03 PM
Nothing is scarier than The Exorcist..Nothing.
Well…except maybe being married to O.J.
June 20th, 2007 at 3:09 PM
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Candyman
Blair Witch
Halloween
Nightmare on Elm Street / Children of the Corn (both are more scary for children)
June 20th, 2007 at 3:29 PM
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Wrong Turn
Deliverance
The Ring
The Exorcist
June 20th, 2007 at 4:35 PM
What, no Spring Break Shark Attack?
June 20th, 2007 at 8:24 PM
Only the classics
Exorcist
Nightmare on Elmstreet
Friday the 13th
I can still remember vividly the countless nightmares these damn movies produced as a kid. True sign of an effective horror flick.
June 20th, 2007 at 9:26 PM
The scariest movie ever has to be “3 men and a Baby.” I watched the entire movie once when I was a kid, but I have watched the sceen of the dead kid in the window about a million time and it freaks me out every time.
July 2nd, 2007 at 2:53 AM
Burnt offerings that old lady in the chair at the end creepy a hell
