First Landon and the Gold Cup, and then the Female Reporter Shoved Out of the Locker Room
Uncategorized June 25th. 2007, 2:31pm
So now that the US has defeated Mexico to capture another Gold Cup title, can someone find the next event south of the border in which we can expect to get booed? That may have been a clunky opening line, but we’re referring to Miss America getting booed by the Mexicans.
The US rallied from a 1-0 deficit to register a stirring 2-1 triumph. (Viewing the sweet game-winning goal here.)
Landon Donovan’s PK in the second half not only tied the game, but also tied him with Eric Wynalda as the top scorer in US Soccer history (34 goals each).
In a far more interesting story, this anonymous female blogger Andrea Canales was shoved out of the LA Galaxy locker room by defender Marcos Gonzalez, who “didn’t feel comfortable with a woman in the locker room and [told me] that I needed to leave right away.” Release the hounds!

Miss America’s lucky the Mexicans didn’t pour cups of urine on her like they frequently do to the US team.

An anonymous female blogger got press credentials?
What in the name of Beckham and Cruise?
June 25th, 2007 at 3:03 PM
She’s not an anonymous blogger. Her name is Andrea Canales and she writes for a number of web sites, including ESPN Soccernet. The blog is just something she and another soccer reporter do on the side.

Uh, what about cups of urine?
The faster the US can get out of the midset that Landon Donovan will do crap for the US in actual big time competition, the better. This guy always performs in worthless action like CONCCAFA or whatever. Until he has the balls to do something in a big international game, he can derilickt my balls. He killed us in the World Cup last year with his tenativeness and lack of killer instinct, which if he had, could be one of the most dangerous strikers not only for the US, but in the world. Boo to Donovan looking good by getting ANOTHER PK goal… There is no reason this guy shouldnt be able to score on anyone, his speed and quickness is incredible, but he’s a big pussy. Nuff said. Yeah! USA Gold Cup Champs. Now try not to blow in the Conferderations cup. my prediction for that tourney in09 will include no goals for donovan.

Thanks for that, Brian

TBL -
The Shooter (the legend – the icon) dies and the 1st story I see on Monday morning is soccer? No mention of ‘The Shooter’ at all on the first page. You are dead(spin) to me.

No problem. I’m not her biggest fan, but he shouldn’t be touching her.
In other news, Feilhaber’s goal was just sick.

Can we officially make a rule that until US Soccer defeats a good team outside of the Mexicans that nothing they do is noteworthy. They always beat Mexico, big deal.
June 25th, 2007 at 3:43 PM
Sure, we can make that rule, Simon. Then I’ll post this link – http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport3/worldcup2002/hi/matches_wallchart/usa_v_portugal/newsid_1925000/1925361.stm – and tell ya to suck it.

Great win against a good team. Let’s hope te younger players aren’t too traumatized by the massacre they will face in the Copa America. The United State will lose, and will lose often.

The locker room issue has always bothered me, in that players refuse to stay after they are dressed for reporters to talk to them, and so the compromise has been that reporters hunt them down for quotes while they’re changing. It would be much more ideal for all concerned if the players would get dressed and then go sit in some sort of press area for 15 minutes.

Winning the Gold Cup is always noteworthy. It’s our regional championship.
June 25th, 2007 at 5:20 PM
good thing we didn’t need Beasley to score on that WIDE OPEN NET at the end…
jesus.
June 25th, 2007 at 6:26 PM
Hey Jon, can you name another regional championship in the world, or america, that holds any significance to fans? Concafa is a D-League tourney that Ameica should have been EXPECTED to win.
June 25th, 2007 at 6:54 PM
Johnny, we should be expected to win it, and we did…Brazil was expected to win the World Cup and they didn’t even reach the final. Anything can happen in these tournaments, and it is good that we went out and took care of business. The only thing that pisses me off, is the lineup that Bradley is taking to Copa America, with our group we had a great chance to make the knockout rounds, and truly make a statement about American soccer, instead he stated, “it is wrong to take all these players away from their clubs for a full month.” Our international team is so much more important then the LA Galaxy getting Landon Donovan back, and I am sure that every MLS fan would much rather be watching a stacked USA team taking on some of the ebst in the world.
June 25th, 2007 at 7:00 PM
Johnny, if you think regional championships around the world aren’t important to fans, you’re really not paying attention.
June 25th, 2007 at 7:04 PM
Simon, since the Bob Bradley took over the USA have won many games, agaisnt top flight competition…3 friendlies come to mind
USA beats Denmark 3-1
USA beats Mexico 2-0
USA beats Ecaudor 3-1
All three were agaisnt top flight competition, including two teams who made the knockout stage in the last World Cup
June 25th, 2007 at 7:40 PM
While I wouldn’t count the win over Denmark’s C-team as being quite as legit as the other two, I will say that the USA under Bradley has made some good strides so far. Going to Venezuela to play in the Copa America will be a very good learning experience for a young set of Americans, many of whom will likely be on the 2010 World Cup team. I was pleased to see that they could come back from behind in an important match, unlike how they played against the Czechs during the World Cup…
June 25th, 2007 at 8:17 PM
Z, I agree about Denmark, I just looked back and saw who they played…but the Ecuador match to me is especially significant, Ecuador almost beat England in the knockout rounds (besides Beckham’s free kick). Either way, people are not giving this team credit, they ar eyoung, and extremley talented, and I think they should hold their own in the Confederations cup, only because you never know what other regions are going to send…

I was at the game, my first ever national team game, and I couldn’t believe the atmosphere. The closest thing I could compare it to was a college football “Rivalry” game. It’s an odd feeling being a foreigner in Chicago. That’s the way it always is, but it’s amazing seeing/hearing the crowd errupt when the first SUB came on the field one hour before kick-off. Lack of security was a huge issue as there were tons of fights in the stands, and I’m talking BRAWLS.
Landon “Prima” Donovan is a douche and I agree he is very overrated.
June 25th, 2007 at 9:02 PM
Thank you! Finally a response regarding Donovan. He sucks, and cannot perform when the pressure is on. The fact that 4 of his goals in the tourney were PK’s further illustrates my anger with him. Is there really no one else to play in his spot on the National Team more effectively?
Regarding the other responses. You DIDNT just compare the World Cup, I says THE WORLD CUP to concafa did you? I understand that other regional tournaments have much prestige behind them, but as far as america goes, i should have been more clear. In the western Hemisphere, there are no regional tourney’s that really mean crap. Concafa is a qualifier tourney for the more important confederations cup, which im guessing will deflate much of the air out of the balloon for the US team before we head to the WC in 2010. Plainly put, it was MEXICO, in a sub-par tournament, in a game in which it took the most spectacular goal in US mens SOccer history to defeat a team that the US has dominated for much of the last decade. not only that, they almost blew it several times in the end. Their “best” attackers goals all came from PK’s.
Just a question, what if a few calls go the other way and Landon doesnt get a few freebies? Does the american team even make the finals of this crappy tournament? I just see where this is going cause its happened before. It goes a little something like this.
America makes headway in the international soccer team by winning or performing well in a tournament. As the build up a head of steam towards more prestigious events like the confederations cup, copa america, the world cup, etc, they continue to pummel local rivals to the likes of OHHHH, PUERTO RICO!!!! Jamaica mon! Guatemala! I dont think they even have fresh water in that place man. So yep, the US is quite high on the horse before entering the main competition then before you know it…… WHAM! US gets spanked by GHANA. FUcking ghana! they cant even cure the flu there, and thier politics are run by the guy that makes sandals out of banana tree leaves.
Point of this is, the US needs to quit playing all these third world countries and get up against some real competition. same for the MLS. they need friendlies against top tier european and south american clubs in order to learn the game the best play, cause we clearly arent the best, and playing a team full of starving migrants time after time as primers for major tournaments clearly isnt working.
Im glad they won the cup, but i hate donovan, he singlehandedly killed our hopes in Germany. His teneativeness handcuffed the offensive attacks and let the opponenets simply tee-off on the reluctant to attack, or show his skills bc he is scared of being punked, DONOVAN. like i said before, he can deralickt my balls.
June 26th, 2007 at 4:36 AM
The female blogger let herself get punked out by a foreign player in her own country?! What’s that about? This is 2007 not 1807 woman. She should have stayed and finished the job. Let Gonzalez leave smelling funky if he didn’t want to dress in front of her. Too bad for her.
June 26th, 2007 at 1:55 PM
She did stay, spidergirl.
