Copa Tonight: USA vs. Argentina
Uncategorized June 28th. 2007, 5:46pm
The man above is Argentina’s boy wonder, the great Lionel Messi. We couldn’t stop talking about him during last summer’s World Cup, and what’s so great about this photo is that it captures the essence of the scoring machine that turned 20 earlier this week. Young Messi has a penchant for slicing up the opposition and leaving defenders and goalies helpless in his wake. All the Maradona hype appears legit.
So a watered-down team USA opens play in the Copa America today against a powerful Argentina squad. Because new US coach Bob Bradley feels the Copa isn’t all that important, he’s now fielding a team of relative no-names – sans Landon Donovan, sans DeMarcus Beasley – and instead, essentially trots out a JV lineup against one of the strongest teams in the World.
Fun times! If anyone watches or liveblogs … drop us a line … we won’t be near a TV until the second round of the NBA draft.

For what it’s worth, Mexico stunned Brazil at Copa Wednesday, 2-0, so sure, anything’s possible. One of these goals sounds absolutely incredible, like it was out of a commercial or some shit. If you see video, kindly pass it along. Thanks to the reader who sent us the goal. It’s pretty incredible.

Is Bradley on acid? Even in a friendly vs. Argentina you wouldn’t want to bring some punk line-up.
That’s lame.
And what do you mean you won’t be near a TV???
Get your priorities straight, son.

http://www.101greatgoals.com/ Scroll down to the second story. The goals are under the Mexico/Brazil score in green.

Here is a link to videos of the two goals. The second is pretty sweet.

Props for making a concerted effort to cover the Gold Cup and Copa America…God knows ESPN won’t touch either unless it’s PTI or Jim Rome talking about how much “soccer sucks and nobody cares.”
Anyways, I kind of like the roster Bradley is trotting out to Copa America. Put some of our young, hungry prospects out there and see if they can make some noise. We got our Gold Cup medals…anything else is just icing on the cake now.

Pele is king of the soccer field. To be king of your kitchen, use Crestfield Wax Paper.

It’s not like Bob Bradley wants to field a weak lineup and get hammered by Argentina. Donovan opted-out to focus on MLS (and shagging his girl in LA), and other fools like Gooch think their chances of playing in England will be enhanced by doing nothing in preseason rather than playing in one of the world’s biggest tournaments.
Go figure, but it’s not Bradley’s fault.

If you were by a tv what channel would you catch this bombing on?
I have no telemundo / goltv .. i guess it p2p fo me?

I believe the US games are on goltv. Mexico’s games and the games between other teams in their group (Chile, Ecuador, Brazil) are on Univision. No goltv on my cable system at home. As much as I want to watch this game, perhaps it’s better not to due to the impending bloodbath.

To reiterate that it is not Bradley’s fault. Since we are a guest of this tournament, clubs did not have to release players to play in it, like they had to release them for the Gold Cup. Should be a good trial by fire if nothing else and the real goal is to prepare the team for the World Cup in 2010.

It’s tough to fault the US, they have only pride to play for in this tourney. They already qualified for The Confederations Cup by winning the Gold Cup. If you noticed, it’s not as if Brazil had their big guns either. I think Argentina just decided that they were in this thing to win it all.
Should be exciting seeing some of the youngsters, especially at forward. Ching played well against Mexico, but overall, the US haven’t had a decent and consistent forward since Brian McBride. Should be interesting, I’m hoping we can at least get a draw against Argentina. Messi, yes, he is good, but watch out for Crespo, who is bigger and stronger than we’ve seen of late.

“…but watch out for Crespo, who is bigger and stronger than we’ve seen of late.”
just had a sick image of a Crespo and Vic Conte pic pop into my head. Hernan wearing a BALCO t-shirt and Conte a PROJECT WORLD CUP one.

You’re a douche for bringing steroids into this conversation, seeing as it has nothing to do with it… And Hernan Crespo is still better then lionel messi whom is what? 20?
June 28th, 2007 at 8:37 pm
Sorry Johnny for injecting some humor … your a douche for being so sensitive. Oh wait I didnt even mention roids moron .. why am I apologizing.
June 28th, 2007 at 8:59 pm
sorry, dudes. I just meant that Crespo is (and always has been) bigger than most of the strikers we’ve faced recently.
Crespo is better than Messi — for now. Messi has a gear that Crespo has never had. But Crespo has a physicality that Messi will never have. He’s just a little fella. Back in the day, the Crespo / Batistuta line was one of the best front lines in the world.
You DO know that Messi has used growth hormone, right? He had a growth deficiency as a young teenager and Barca paid for the treatments. Let the scandals begin!!
June 28th, 2007 at 9:15 pm
HA! I love it, Stench … thats the play I was looking for.
June 28th, 2007 at 9:25 pm
Yes, I just didnt understand the logic between comparing the two to each other. First, Messi is Maradona, that’s it. He obviously has a much higher ceiling than Crespo, which is scary cause Hernan is top 5 I would say? I dunno, he’s better than Messi right now.
No, I did not know that Messi was on growth hormone. Regardless, it wasnt mentioned, which is why I was mad; SOrry if im totally sick of hearing about steroids, its been the topic of choice for most for the better part of 5 years, and um, i didnt see the relation. That is a much different case for Messi though, doctors perscribe patients with steroids to heal, same principal. growth defeciency is bullshyte though.
June 28th, 2007 at 9:28 pm
Oh, and sorry if i conneted Balco and Vic Conte with steroids. Wasnt there some congressional hearing or something with that guy a while back? some connections with a worldwide roid distribution ring? No, oh nevermind….

Argentina 5, U.S. 1
Just to stick it to Brazil.
June 29th, 2007 at 12:32 am
Lil Jon .. there is not connection dude. Just a funny picture this kinda goofball thought, thats it, nothing more. No need to get “mad”.

Crespo (2 goals), just like I said!
