Commence Barry Bonds Week
Uncategorized July 23rd. 2007, 7:51pm
Barry Bonds didn’t homer over the weekend, and remains stuck on 753. The record is 755. Just to cream and clear something up … yes, we abhor the fact that Bonds is about to break and quite possibly shatter a hallowed MLB record. Would we shell out a dime to see him at the ballpark? On principal, hell no. But to blog about it from the sofa? Sure. That can be fun. Plus, there have been so many cheaters in baseball over the last decade that other records (say, most homers in a season) have been cheapened, so why should this outrage us? If Bud were making this a public vote, and we could all decide to strip away McGwire’s 73 homers and anything Bonds has done since turning into the Incredible Hulk, yes, we’d vote against both. But that ain’t happening.
B-squared is almost certain to own the record this week. In case you want to set the Tivo: ESPN2 tonight, then TBS for three games, and chances are good Fox will carry Friday and Saturday’s games. Yes, we’re really, really hoping Scott Olsen is out of jail and back on the mound at some point in the series against the Giants this weekend. With some confidence, we feel Bonds will definitely not tie/break any record with Scott “Stun Gun†Olsen on the mound. But we’d love to see the two go at it.
For the legal eagles in the house, Barry is not quite out of the woods when it comes to his Federal indictment. He sure has one tough-talking lawyer, though. We’re going to link below to a piece that involves the President and Barry Bonds, and all we ask is that you refrain from allowing your head to explode.

McGwire – 70. Bonds – 73. Bored at work proofreaders of the world, unite!

Fleer Ultra was the shit back in the day.
Also, I think “Stun Gun” Scott Olson has a better flow to it.

So the Marlins are going to be on television? Sweet. I hope Stun Gun puts one right in Barry’s ear hole.
PS – I’m an actual Marlins fan.

As I just commented on the UFC thread, give Bonds a break. My God, once again, just throwing out bullet points and facile indignation at Bonds. I’m not saying that you (or anyone else) has to pull for Bonds and I understand why so many don’t “like” him as a baseball player–like we all “liked” Kirby Puckett (intentional choice by me). But, he’s not THE problem with baseball and we should stop treating him as such. He’s the best player of my lifetime (I’m 37) and I marvel at his ability to take all the pressure over his head and continue to perform and motivate himself. Do I understand why one doesn’t “like” him? Yes, yes I do. But, for God’s sake, can we just put Bonds in a bit of perspective?
Hell, our tax dollars have been turning his life upside down for FOUR (FOUR!!!) years now and there still isn’t an indictment. That’s ridiculous. And, I suspect that if many of the Bonds-as-Anti-Christ-types would agree if they would step back from their seething desire for him to die or break his leg or “*” him.
If so many are going to hurl him under the bus for what so many just know he did and just know how it affected him and just know that he’s a “cheater,” I wonder how many would be willing to ask Hank Aaron how he hit so many home runs in the first place? I mean, he played in a whiffle ball park and all, but those are a suspicious lot of home runs for a guy who probably smoked and surely never weight trained. Wonder if he ever took ‘greeenies’ or tried to get an edge? And, that Ted Williams. How in the heck could he go away from baseball TWICE, fight two wars–well, one war, one “police action”–and return to the game without missing a beat? (That’s rhetorical, okay. But, my point is that it doesn’t take too many trips to baseballreference.com to see that baseball history has outliers and some of the outliers are the best ever…and maybe, just maybe “cheating” isn’t the answer to anything.)

Also, given that Bonds this year is averaging one HR every just-over-4 games, it seems a bit of a stretch to say that he is “almost certain” to own the record by the end of the week.

It took about 3 months for a jury to indict Michael Vick. Four years later, they have yet to indict Bonds. I’m not a huge Bonds fan, but that smells like a witch hunt.

Greg Anderson has only been put in Jail 3 times and has spent only 2 years total time in there now now…I am sure when they are done with the water torture…he’ll crack on the rack. Anderson has only been convicted of a crime and served his sentence so double and triple Jeopardy for that crime is of course necessary and money well spent.

I think Bush will pardon him anyway
July 23rd, 2007 at 8:53 PM
Yeah, the Balco case is Bush’s legacy. What’s that you say about I-R-A-Q?

Stun Gun Olsen does have a great ring to it.
I think Bonds might fight him, given the chance.

Only two more homeruns for some pitcher to man-up and bean bonds with a fast ball. Given how much his head has grown from the steroids, whoever does it would be able to plausably argue that it was an accident.
*NOTE: For the overly seriously out there, I don’t really want Bonds to get hit in head with a baseball.

If A-rod turned into a a-hole and was about to break the record, then alot of people would hate on him. Trust me I can see that happening too. A-Rod will have contracts that will make him have over 500 million dollars by the time he is done playing ball! What real baseball fan will like a person that has Never won a world Championship and made that much money over a career?
Bonds and Vick are in the news right now in a negative way to get your mind off the war and off gas prices! Remember DC told you this!
July 23rd, 2007 at 9:17 PM
DC…agree about Bonds…but Vick was killing dogs man (allegedly) thats some sick shit. Oh and yeah there is no if Arod turning into A-Hole…it happened awhile back.

Hear is the thing about the dog fighting situation. You have people who are mad as hell about it and saying that its cruel to animals. But at the same time for years you have people being cruel to horses and you have cockfighting. I know of a person who is a famous boxer from my hometown who came on tv years ago and said that he was cock fighter…..ROY JONES JR. The guy is my favorite boxer, but what is the difference between what he did (he said he did it) and what is (allegedly) done by Mike Vick. I don’t like Vick (my wife does though) but I think he is getting a raw deal.

I thought B-squared was Bonnie Bernstein.

Its funny that we want sports athletes and people who’s job is to “entertain” us to go through hell and back to prove that they deserve to be the best in there profession but we don’t ask that of the people who are leading our country.

“Only two more homeruns for some pitcher to man-up and bean bonds with a fast ball.”
why? players should be loving bonds…he’s the lightning rod for criticism when it comes to the steroids that everyone else is doing too.

DC, are you saying that if a politician was indicted for running a dog fighting ring or even a prostitution ring, they wouldn’t be put through the same scrutiny that Vick has?
