NFL Network Censors Prime Time
Uncategorized July 30th. 2007, 2:33pm
By now, you’re aware of Deion Sanders’ insane column defending Mike Vick. We didn’t bother link it up here when it was published, mostly because Prime Time, while fun as hell to watch on a football field, is a blithering imbecile who should be kept away from a computer at all times.
The NFL Network agrees with us:
Understandably, the NFL did not like that one of the faces of its network was being portrayed as a Vick apologist. Deion sent a column responding to the criticism to The News-Press and the NFL Network on Friday morning.
That night, I received an e-mail from Thomas George, the NFL Network managing editor, which read: “This column and subsequent variations of it (are) not approved by NFL Network. It cannot run.€
Which begs the question: If Deion spews this garbage on the NFL Network, will that be cool? Is this simply a deal that if Deion is going to say bombastic crap, he needs to make sure he says it on-air? Not that we’d see it … no NFL Network in New York for us.

Deion’s column was more on point than that Mickey Spillane “cocksure walk” crapola TBL posted the other day.
July 30th, 2007 at 3:08 PM
Uh, is this even America anymore?? It’s scary to me to think that if you have an opposing view to the popular opinion that you will be reprimanded by it. Vick apologist?? Did you even read his article??
July 30th, 2007 at 3:12 PM
as important as “innocence until proven guilty” is in America, what Deion said was just plain stupid.
theres a difference between defending possible guilt as deion did and defending a plaintiff’s innocence before a trial has proven his guilt.
July 30th, 2007 at 3:21 PM
I read his article, and it really wasn’t that bad. The part that got the most extreme was: “Maybe he just loves his dogs in a different way… Maybe he loves the biggest and the baddest…”
But, Deion admitted that what Vick had done was wrong multiple times. (“Was it wrong? Absoulutly.”)
Most people will just assume that he defended Vick because they didn’t read his article. It can be interpretted that way, but it certainly wasn’t as blatant as the media painted it to be.
July 30th, 2007 at 3:26 PM
Wow , TBL you just got picked off . Ben this isn’t America , That america doesn;t really exist anymore .
July 30th, 2007 at 3:27 PM
I’m going to sit back and wait for all of the angry white males to come on here and whine about the political correct behavior going on here. The pulling of endorsements, and pulling of an article, wow. I guess it’s only outrageous if it happens to Don Imus.
July 30th, 2007 at 3:57 PM
I’ll just wait for the angry black guys to come here and defend this moron.
See, Vick loves his dogs, that’s why he has them rip each others to shreds until they die.
He just loves dogs THAT much. he has a passion for seeing dogs chow down on each other’s face, bursting eyeballs and blood gushing, the whole thing. It gave his heart a certain calmness.
“I believe Vick had a passion for dogfighting. I know many athletes who share his passion. The allure is the intensity and the challenge of a dog fighting to the death. It’s like ultimate fighting, but the dog doesn’t tap out when he knows he can’t win. It reminds me of when I wore a lot of jewelry back in the day because I always wanted to have the biggest chain or the biggest, baddest car. It gives you status.”
Is this some sort of cultural thing, having a dog that can kill other dogs and proving it?
If so, that’s a sick ass broken culture. Yeah, dogs killing each other, jewelry, all the same.
What an idiot.
July 30th, 2007 at 3:59 PM
His point, while utterly ridiculous and hard to agree with, has a semblance of logic.
I think the bigger issue in this topic is why any reputable news source would let Deion Sanders write a column. Hosting an old school dance contest, I could understand. But a column?
July 30th, 2007 at 4:08 PM
Great comment, benrand! Totally on point with the issue here – there is no justification for dog fighting. I don’t care if people defend Vick for being “unfairly targeted” by the federal government just because he’s famous, but I do have a problem with people comparing dog fighting to buying a fancy car or expensive jewelry.
July 30th, 2007 at 4:12 PM
i just read deion’s column. that was some grade a “jibba-jabba”.
July 30th, 2007 at 4:18 PM
What is Deion’s stance on veal cows?
July 30th, 2007 at 4:23 PM
Yo ya’ll, you better rekognize Prime Time speakin da troof on dis one yo. My main man Ookie is just indulging in his primal urges all us black folk gots to get in on yo knowwhaIMsayin. Yo its like dis yo, if mike vick were mike dunkleberry the accountant from virginia, johnny law wouldn’t be sweatin’ him and putting all these resources towards building a case and looking for doggy bodies. As for Mike Vick viciously, maliciously, and fictionlessly brutally-ally murdering the losing dogs, I think everyone needs to know that he didn’t murder those dogs. Electrocuting dogs balls is an ancient African tradition which dates back many thousands of years… many many moons before lightning even, African dog fighters would electrocute the balls of their losing dog to pay respects to him before sending them to doggy heaven…. by electrocuting their balls. And so you see, I think it’s clear to see who the real savages are here, no no… it is not the doggyballs electrocutioner … it is the evil white man who always denies the black man his true primal urges… amen PRIME TIME!
July 30th, 2007 at 4:37 PM
It’s fantastic to see the moral outrage with this whole dog fighting business that Michael Vick created. I guess we can get Michael Vick to run a bullfighting ring in order to get the masses outraged about that as well. How about an alligator wrestling ring, Mike? Hey Mike, have you heard? They’re killing elephants for their tusks in Africa. You should open up a killing ring in order to bring the “outraged” masses attention to that as well. Don’t worry about the sheep Mike, they’re out here being outraged every time Nancy Grace tells them to be.
July 30th, 2007 at 4:44 PM
Dog fighting is despicable, but the ironies are everywhere. Darrell makes a good point about bullfighting.
July 30th, 2007 at 4:45 PM
Who’s the bigger sheep Darrell – the people against a sociological issue or the people who defend another simply because of the color of the accused skin?
July 30th, 2007 at 4:54 PM
The fact that dogfighting is illegal in a country where abortion is legal is laughable. If he drowned a dog, so what? That drowning was alot more humane that what was done to Terry Schiavo. How can you send someone to jail for hanging a dog? If Vick were a white woman, and dragged his kids one by one into a bathroom to drown them, all he would get is therapy. The only thing that is barbaric and illogical is white people’s sense of right and wrong. Oh, and don’t worry about angry black men coming to this blog to defend Vick, they’ll more likely show up on his jury. Remember the O.J. trial? Ha Ha Ha !
July 30th, 2007 at 5:22 PM
Darrell,
You didn’t have to wait long. In the very next post, in his typically idiotic fashion, benrand comes along and cherrypicks one quote and off he goes!
July 30th, 2007 at 5:40 PM
SScuff,
Without a doubt, the bigger sheep are the vast majority of people who didn’t care in the slightest about this “sociological” issue until now AND who have the nerve to assume that everybody who has a different opinion than them, or, more accurately, even have the temerity to suggest that people wait until the facts are in , are defending another because of the color of the accused’s skin.
July 30th, 2007 at 5:41 PM
It’s sad what sports has come to these days, what happened to just having a good argument with friends, nothing personal, no demeaning insults and not turning every argument into something about race? In a perfect world, yes, but since this world is hardly perfect, we have to deal with reality and the reality is whether we like it or not, race still plays a big part of what we do in this country. Now, I’m not going to sit here and insult any of you by waving the black man’s flag as if dogfighting is some kind of inherent fabric of black culture, even though some people naively have tried to portray it as such. I will say though that I’m always amazed at how people react to comments from other people based on what I can only perceive is to be the color of their skin. Take for example, a couple of weeks ago when Emmitt Smith, while not defending the alleged accusations against Michael Vick, gave what I thought was a rational, though not proven, reason why the federal government would be so hot to convict Michael Vick. Well, the **** hit the fan when that got out, Peter King proceeded to tear Emmitt a new one in his following Monday column, and for what, because the guy simply gave an alternative opinion as to what may be going on with the federal government’s case against Vick. Now we have Deion, while his argument was much less substantive, also making some candid and obviously not well-received comments regarding the Michael Vick case. As a black man, I’m very cynical of how these two men have been treated by the media simply based on the fact that they expressed “their” opinion. What if it had not been Emmit Smith but rather Joe Montana, would Peter King had been so quick to write him off? How about instead of Deion Sanders, it was Troy Aikman? If it doesn’t make you think, it should because this is the reality we live in, a world still separated by the color of our skin, the differences in our cultures, and the roots of our heritage. There are some things as a black man, I just see differently than my white brothers and I’m sure the same thing could be said if it were put in reverse but at the end of the day rather than insulting each other for what we believe by mocking each others beliefs, we should learn to agree to disagree and respect the rights of each other to express our views without condemnation or vilification. Let’s try to do better fellas as to how we treat each other on this blog, TBL has done a great job setting this up and it would be a shame to see it go away because people can’t be civil to each other like human beings, which at the end of the day is what we all are, not black, not white but humans. Peace to everybody and in everybody let their be peace.
July 30th, 2007 at 5:43 PM
What a depressing day… I can’t believe how many stupid people we have living in this country!
July 30th, 2007 at 5:54 PM
KS, if they’re not sheep, then what type of barnyard animal are the folks that come on here and bust out the “you people”, “white people this, white people that”, and other assorted blanket assessments?
July 30th, 2007 at 5:55 PM
Being politically correct is being morally incorrect.
July 30th, 2007 at 5:56 PM
Then you must be depressed all the time…oh right, you’re talking about other people. Nevermind…
July 30th, 2007 at 6:25 PM
Good one, KS, thanks so much for proving my point!
July 30th, 2007 at 7:18 PM
Oh c’mon now sportsgal, a little fussing never hurt anybody.
July 30th, 2007 at 7:42 PM
Unless they’re fussing about Mike Vick.
July 30th, 2007 at 7:45 PM
Innocent until proven guilty y’all? Ain’t never heard of that? Has Mike Vick been on trial yet? And yet we’re scared to have Deion raising any sort of reservations? Why is this so offensive to you?
July 30th, 2007 at 7:54 PM
Really? I don’t think anybody here is hurt? If so, we better stick to T & A and TBL’s mancrush on Tom Brady and Brady Quinn!
July 30th, 2007 at 8:09 PM
The people who say white people this and white people that are just verbalizing the mirror opinion that white people don’t have to. Instead of black people this, and black people that, you can instead hide your prejudices behind references to hip hop culture or someone’s cocksure walk. You can show your disgust at the “booyah” culture at ESPN. It’s a formula that works for both sport talk radio and blogs. I mean damn, Shaq spent the 90’s getting blasted because he had the audacity to branch out into other interests during the summer. How did people verbalize that disgust? “Shaq needs to spend more time on his free throws than making rap albums”, as if it was the rap albums that made him not able to make free throws.
July 30th, 2007 at 9:39 PM
People told Shaq he needs to spend more time on his free throws than making rap albums because his rap album totally sucked! It’s the same thing as saying, “don’t quit your day job.” Stop trying to be Scoop Jackson!
July 30th, 2007 at 9:47 PM
The fact that people come on these boards and make generalizations is as bad as the “groups” their talking about – whether it be the media, a race, a government, whatever…however… arguments would hold up much better if people would stop coming here and say things like:
1) “it’s the media’s fault because if it was a ??? person it would be soooo much different”
2) “you people would never understand what it’s like because the shoe is not on the other foot but even if it was you still wouldn’t understand”
3) “there’s no doubt racsim is involved in every single aspect of sports/life” (TBL is guilty of doing this themselves)
4) “you people hide or subtly show racims but to certain races it’s sooo apparent and we’re beinging it to your attention”
5) “just because this guy says something a little different everyone calls him racist”
and a number of other arguments.
By everyone constantly saying these ignorant things we’re giving the media and everyone else the attention they want while we argue over sports – the same as what league owners want to happen – we argue and spend money supporting our team meanwhile the games are rigged so the poor fight over scraps while the rich continue to get richer and by the way, every race has their poor BUT there’s rich in every race too so easy on the reverse psychology bullshit – regardless of what the numbers are, there are rich white folk and black folk – maybe it’s not even in your mind but regardless, the rich continue to get rich off of you regardless of the race.
Everyone needs to stop bitching and wait and see what happens on this and the other issues going on while ignoring fucking AM radio, general media, your friends/family, community leaders, etc…
July 30th, 2007 at 9:49 PM
Darrell: Huh?
July 30th, 2007 at 11:12 PM
I guess I have to be Scoop Jackson on a blog full of Jason Whitllocks. Someone has to make intellectual sense on here
July 31st, 2007 at 12:43 AM
Seriously folks, can we all take a break from the black/white posts? Agreed that we all have different perspectives on life’s issues, but beating each other over the head or trying to outshout the other doesn’t accomplish much. After a while it just turns into the NOISB blog part 2 – entertaining at first, but then the one note instrument gets a little tiresome.
July 31st, 2007 at 1:12 AM
What the hell is wrong with having hot chicks jello wrestling and betting on it rather than starving animals chewing each other’s face off?
It’s not like Mike did this once or twice, he had kennels for these poor dogs.
July 31st, 2007 at 2:03 AM
Sure Darrell. We’d settle for Michael Irvin.
July 31st, 2007 at 1:46 PM
TBL supporting censorship. Wow. I don’t care if Deion Sanders came out and wrote a column about how dogfighting shouldn’t be a crime (which would be a perfectly acceptable opinino to have, just like having an opinino that marijuana should be legalized). There is no reason he shouldn’t be allowed to write it.
How do you construe this for supporting Vick:
“He could lose millions worth of endorsements. Nike has already suspended the release of his new shoe. He could lose millions he was supposed to get from the Atlanta Falcons, if the club decides to cut him. ”
The thesis of his article: “You can still choose to condemn him, but I’m trying to take you inside his mind so you can understand where he might be coming from.”
“All of that is enough to make me cringe because I have three highly-trained protection German shepherds,”
“Was he wrong? Absolutely. Was he stupid? Can’t argue with that. Was he immature? No doubt. But is he the ringleader? I just can’t see it.” (A completely fine opinion to have right?)
“just more concerned about bringing to justice someone who killed a human.” (This is ok in America right?)
“The reason this is turning into a three-ring circus is that baseball is boring, basketball is months away, football is around the corner and we in the media don’t have a thing interesting to write about.”
You can say all you want about corporations have the right to do whatever, blah, blah, blah. But you know as well as I do that when we allow censorship to go on by corporations, by the government, by whoever in media, especially when its not hate speach or imminently dangerous or damaging to society, we start to erode on simple Constitutional rights. And if you don’t believe that, in the infinite words of Dubya, “You’re unAmerican.”
July 31st, 2007 at 2:01 PM
Michael Irivin? I’m waiting for you to raise your games up to the level of Bill Maas!!!!!!
