Dan Patrick Returns For His 3-Day Radio Goodbye (We Think)
Uncategorized August 14th. 2007, 4:17pm
No clue if this is breaking news or not, but we’ve got it on good authority that the Dan Patrick farewell tour – it’s been dwindled down to a mere three days – begins tomorrow on ESPN Radio. When he announced back on July 9 that he was leaving ESPN for points unknown, we anticipated a month-long goodbye from the network where he was the top dog.
Never happened. It probably had something to do with Patrick getting another job, but we haven’t been able to get anyone to confirm that. Somewhere along the line, our source says, ESPN decided to give Patrick three days to say goodbye, and it begins tomorrow and runs through the rest of the week. (Full admission: We haven’t listened to ESPN radio at all in the last three weeks, so if this has been announced all over the place, forgive us.)
Who’s taking his place? We had a fun little post about that recently, and haven’t had much news to update you with. One source – and we’re still taking this with a grain of salt – told us that Mr. Colin Cowherd has taken his name out of the running. Seems like an extremely unlikely scenario … but it’s what we’ve heard. Obviously more as we get it.

In this issue of Facing-Saving Daily: Ronny Thompson and Colin Cowherd!
I’m sure that “source is a friend of Colin. Just like a lot of head coaching candidates take there names out of the running, Cowherd’s friends are leaking Cowherd taking his name out of the running. Cowherd is too much of a self-promoter to take his name out of anything; his ego wouldn’t let him.

maybe ESPN is actually going to make a bold move and they backing the Brink’s truck up to Jim Rome’s house and they are going to buy him out of his deal with Premier?

Mr. Enfuego, would you please retire and move on already. What’s with the big DIVA exit-the three-day, boohoo death-scene. Just go and get on with the next phase of life.

I dunno…I buy that about Cowherd. He’s made a pretty big deal on his show over the last couple months about how happy he is 9a-1p, how it fits into his life, allows him to see his kids, be a divorced dad, etc., etc.
If he does take this job, it will make a lot of what he said recently ring very, very hollow. Of course, a certain amount of money will make anyone change their mind, but beyond getting an offer he can’t refuse, I don’t think Cowherd will take over Dan’s slot just because.
I guess we’ll see if I am proved right or not.

I’m pretty sure the 3 day thing was ESPN’s idea to save face because they probably wanted to banish him after they found out he already had another job lined up.
I’ll be sad to see him go, honestly I think once again the WWL dropped the ball on this one, they should have been making a big deal about Patrick’s last show the way they overpromote everything else. Instead they put the gag order on anything Patrick related I guess to stop listeners from following him to his new show. They should be a lot more appreciative of everything he has done for them.

Patrick will be fine, but ESPN will be a lot better off if they usher in the Van Pelt era.
He’s much less hated than any of the other personalities that would fit the show.

Van Pelt?
Bring on Van Earl Wright!!!

Just FYI, I live in the Portland area (where Colin is from) and he was out here this last weekend for a charity golf tournament. He was on the NBC affiliate here (where he was a sportscaster as well as a local radio host). They asked him about the rumors of him moving into the DP slot, and he basically said he was happy with the morning slot, and thought the pace and style of his show was more suited to mornings. Just FYI.

3 more days of Patrick?
Heres a good drinking game to play. Anytime Danny name drops (Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, etc) take a shot, when Danny mentions the possibility of a player being in the Hall of Fame, another shot. Any mention of Barry Bonds, Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant or Shaq, another shot.
You should be completely in the bag by 2:45.
