Dan Patrick’s Back, and No, Colin Cowherd Isn’t Getting the Job
Uncategorized August 15th. 2007, 2:07pm
Whew. We were a bit apprehensive Tuesday when we posted that Dan Patrick would be returning for the rest of the week … but fortunately, our source was correct. Patrick is on ESPN radio today, Thursday and Friday, saying goodbye to all his old pals (and soon-to-be rivals?) over the airwaves.
Patrick apparently dropped the name of his new website on the air, DanPatrick.com, which opens with a mildly amusing video of wealthy Dan (nice mansion) sifting through a trunk full of ties he wore during memorable moments at the WWL. Towards the end, “Memories” (we’re not up to speed on 60s/70s music, so maybe it has another title) is playing in the background. If you get misty, we’ll pass you a tampon.
As for his replacement, we’ve now been assured from multiple sources that it will not be the guy that blew up our website, Colin Cowherd. Apparently, he had the job if he wanted it (!!), but ESPN notified him there would have to be some minor tweaks, such as less college football and less in-your-face feather-ruffling, and Cowherd balked. So does this make the leader Mike Tirico? Or do they go with one of the potential combinations we proposed two weeks ago? They listen to your ideas, people, so post them here.

I’ll take the job.

I had given up listening to ESPN during this timeslot once Patrick was axed (and I only listened occasionally anyway).
Unless it’s someone good, I don’t plan on going back.

Everyone get ready for Stephen A. Smith and Chester Cheetah in ‘The Scream and Cheese Hour.’

He’s not on in LA. We just got two local guys I’ve never heard in Dan Patrick’s (and the myriad of fill ins) normal time slot. Anyone have any clue what’s going on with that?

Ed Lover and Dr. Dre are my picks — with Snoop Dogg as a grass sideline reporter. Daddy Yankee (who was on track for a pro baseball career before an injury derailed it) could be a beisbol correspondent.

I think that Phil Rizzuto is available… what? too soon?

Yes Danny Mac too $#@*&% soon — lol.

Actually enjoyed SVP and Tirico last week when they hosted together. Talked sports, threw in some humor, had good guests, what a concept.
If anyone heard Michael Kay and Steve (I was GM of the Mets) Phillips yesterday, egads, there is nowhere to go but up. That 3 hour Yankee lovefest was just a little much for this midwestern guy.

It should be Van Pelt. I’m thinking that Tirico will be a bit tied up with MNF travel all year.
But neither of those guys has to worry about traveling around to cover the PGA. Hey, who needs great golf coverage when you’ve got Arena Football?

if they listened to our ideas, would stephen smith really have a radio show?

Outstanding point, emaneresu.
The Notorious S.A.S. is bad for radio. But I’ll try to keep this positive.
Mike Tirico would be nice. Scott Van Pelt isn’t too bad; I’ve only heard him once and he seems a bit raw.
If ESPN wants to keep the same style in the 1-4 slot, they’ll need to go with one of those two.
If they wants idiocy (which they seemingly do since they offered the gig to Schrutebag), then go with someone who’s polarizing.
If it wants pure crap, just use John Seibel who, talks, in, commas, and, says, uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, and, ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm every 5-6 seconds. (There goes the positive).
Also, does anyone like Freddy Coleman? I think the guy does a swell job.

NDub…I really like Freddie Coleman. Easy on the ears no big ego gets a good laugh about himself and does not act like he invented the jock strap I think he would be great.

HOW BOUT THAT LINDA COHN! I choose LC or Mike Tirico.

Please God no Linda Cohn, SAS or shrutebag. I think Van Pelt might be at least tolerable.

I’ve been a Steve Mason/John Ireland fan since they were the morning show out here in San Diego. Now they are at ESPN 710 in LA and I think they are one of the best combos out there. I don’t know if they would be required to relocate to Bristol, or even if they would be considered, but I think their personalities have broad appeal and they would do a good job. Unlike some ESPN personalities we all know.

Someone else that I haven’t seen brought up is John Kincade (sp?). He does a good job on his Sunday morning show during the NFL off-season, and I like when he fills in for Colin. He’s got the opinionated nature of Colin without being so overbearing to some……

@IUgrad- in all fairness to Kay and (I can’t believe I’m saying this)Phillips, the news of Phil Rizzuto’s death had just come down, so you can’t really blame them.
