Vick, LeBatard and Fox News
Uncategorized August 29th. 2007, 11:06amWe make it a point to avoid Fox News at all costs, mostly because we’d rather not hear combative guys like Hannity and Colmes prattle on for hours. Dan LeBatard decided to give it a shot and … yeah, you’ve got to see this. Anyone else find it somewhat strange that the topic is race and Mike Vick, and yet Fox couldn’t get one an African-American on the panel?

Neal Boortz is such a clod.
August 29th, 2007 at 11:18 AM
Well, to be fair to CNN, they did use Neal Boortz to cover the closeted homosexual demographic.

“Anyone else find it somewhat strange that the topic is race and Mike Vick, and yet Fox couldn’t get one an African-American on the panel?”
nope
August 29th, 2007 at 11:22 AM
It was nice of them to track down the gay Doctor Evil, though…
August 29th, 2007 at 11:25 AM
Boortz definitely has his thumb in that dogs ass.
No clue way LeBatard would subject himself to appearing on such a pathetic piece of crap FOX News show. That’s what Around the Horn is for.
August 29th, 2007 at 11:25 AM
Whitlock must have been busy.
August 29th, 2007 at 11:25 AM
ummmm, I watched the entire episode and they did talk about brokeback bathroom senator, and Hannity even said the guy should lose his job, so whoever created this video has an obvious agenda.
I think its a joke that they had only white’s on there honestly, they often times have fox news anchor juan williams as a contributor, and some rascist black NOI shabazz dude, so its sad they couldnt get someone of color up there.
Whoever the hell Neil boortz is he must be a genious for adopting leeona helmsleys 12 million dollar dog! To think he beat the stache on that is alarming
August 29th, 2007 at 11:40 AM
Dan LeBatard is one of, if not the smartest and objective sports voices we have today, and I’m glad he went on such a narrow-minded show and didn’t lower himself to the H+C losers.
August 29th, 2007 at 11:49 AM
Funny, I remember seeing two black guys on last night’s Hannity & Colmes discussing the Vick case, and I remember Hannity blasting the Senator saying, “if he did it, he should resign”.
August 29th, 2007 at 11:49 AM
poor lebetard, trying to rationalize with a bunch of closed-mined faux news robots. definitely should have hit them with a BAM!
August 29th, 2007 at 11:52 AM
So next time some of you on here wish to comment on a show, watch the show itself first. =)
August 29th, 2007 at 11:53 AM
Nolan … don’t doubt that happened, but was LeBatard on that episode? we just got this link via a reader
August 29th, 2007 at 11:55 AM
So next time some of you blast a show, watch the show itself first. Believe it or not, they do bring on black people to discuss issues of race, although I (like Lynn Swan thinks) fail to see how this is a issue of race.

Yeah we perfer the childish name calling and bs thats on Olbermann’s countdown to no ratings.

Sorry for the repeat posts. My computer’s acting up.
August 29th, 2007 at 11:58 AM
Sad, yet hopeful.
Sad because the whole time they’re trying to browbeat LeBatard into changing his position, trying to prove him factually incorrect (when they don’t have their facts straight). They’re ignoring the fact that some of the message boards have tirades against Vick that appear racist in tone.
Hopeful because LeBatard doesn’t waver in his belief. He articulated his points clearly without resorting to name calling and he called out Fox News for their hypocrisy in not having any black folks on during that segment.
August 29th, 2007 at 11:59 AM
That’s fine if you got the link, but it gives the reader of this blog the false impression that Hannity & Colmes only bring on white people to discuss the issues of race when that’s not the case.
August 29th, 2007 at 12:02 PM
On last night’s episode, African-American talk show host James Mtume and Lynn Swan discussed the Vick case, but yet, people who read this blog that don’t watch Fox News will be lead to believe that Hannity & Colmes don’t like to bring on African-Americans to discuss issues of race.
August 29th, 2007 at 12:06 PM
True nolan084.
This was a hit on Fox by people who hate Fox .Just read some of the posts.
August 29th, 2007 at 12:10 PM
I just think LebaRetard and the outlet where you got that link from totally overreacted to Hannity & Colmes having one Vick segment where there wasn’t an African-American on the panel. I’ve seen plenty of Hardball panels where there wasn’t a Conservative on to defend an all-out Republican blitz. Yes, I’m biased, as is that link that was sent to you, so I’m doing my part to be the balance.
August 29th, 2007 at 12:11 PM
As valid as it was, you can’t go into a lion’s den and request lamb chops.
His points were not going to be heard, or halfway validated on a platform like this.
August 29th, 2007 at 12:11 PM
Michael Vick will be alright. The news really needs to focus on Jena Louisiana and the “Jena 6″

“His points were not going to be heard, or halfway validated on a platform like this.”
Just like when a Conservative in on a MSNBC or CNN news editorial show. =)

The clip here, as is stated in a title before the video, comes from the 8/27/07 show which had only the three white guys on its panel and no discussion about Senator Craig. On Tuesday, 8/28/07. there was indeed a panel of two African Americans and Hannity did indeed call for Craig’s resignation, “if he did it.”
This was reported by me on the blog. So please stop saying I got it wrong. My facts were right as of the day they were posted.
Also, please note that, as my update on Vick coverage indicated, the “white panel” got two segments at the top of the hour whereas the African Americans got one segment in the second half of the show. Furthermore, there was just one African American, James Mtume there to advocate on behalf of blacks who feel there’s a racial component. Both hosts strenuously disagreed plus they had Lynn Swann on to “balance” Mtume. That on top of the unanimous panel going the other way the night before.

we get it, thanks, now move on
August 29th, 2007 at 12:26 PM
LOL. Without me, I bet most most people that read this thread wouldn’t have realized that they had Mtnume and Swann on last night to discuss Vick. Just doing my part to be the balance of biased reporting/opinion-making against Fox News. =)
August 29th, 2007 at 12:29 PM
“The news really needs to focus on Jena Louisiana and the “Jena 6″.
Not a real story, to all who read this dont waste your precious time on google searching this faux story. It’s all contrived and a waste of real news time.
Go watch mississippi burning if you want to watch, or look into some racial inequalities. that was news worthy, not the bullshit darnell is trying to push.

TSM, behave yourself before Charlie Fry comes by and jacks you one more time.
August 29th, 2007 at 12:36 PM
I used to hate Lebatard and his buffoonery on PTI, but his columns are some of the most insightful out there now. Why he went on this panel where obviously his opinions wouldn’t be listened to I don’t know. I didnt’ like how he said “Some black peope think this is a race issue.” Sorry, but there isn’t a black person that thinks its a race issue just as there isn’t a person that thinks its an NFL issue. It has RACE and NFL in it as issues involved, but it is not solely any of them. The federal government, dogfighting and animal cruelty, gambling, the NFL, race, media relations, public perceptions, advertising, etc., etc. etc.–it is ALL of those issues.
I’m glad to know racists like TSM are still out and open with it. I thought after people stopped wearing the hoods I’d have no idea.
August 29th, 2007 at 12:40 PM
Nolan
I understand what you’re saying, as far Hardball discussing Republicans without a conservative on the panel. But Fox is always try to protray an image of impartiality, matter of fact, isn’t their slogan-”Fair and balanced”?
August 29th, 2007 at 12:42 PM
Can you really take a guy with a dog on his lap seriously?
August 29th, 2007 at 12:51 PM
Fox News had many debates/discussions surrounding the Imus situation and they had many African American guests. They had LeBatard on because he is a minority (Cuban American) and has taken the side of most African Americans.
Fox News is the only unbiased news network out there anymore. They report, you decide.
August 29th, 2007 at 12:53 PM
TBL, I don’t care to know about your political leanings. Thank you.
August 29th, 2007 at 12:53 PM
I for one would like to know what Nolan thinks of this matter.
August 29th, 2007 at 1:24 PM
Next time, you’re going to have to add some kind of sarcasm tag, pal, because for a second, I thought you were serious.
Fox News is the only unbiased news network out there anymore. They report, you decide.
August 29th, 2007 at 1:33 PM
i had to stop watching with a few minutes left. i hate screaming heads. this whole case has nothing to do with race, it has to do with celebrity. face it, we live in an f’ed up country that worships the moves of nobodies like paris, kim kardashian (sorry tbl), etc.
August 29th, 2007 at 1:42 PM
I am serious. CNN and MSNBC are in the spin business. Fox News is in the news business.
August 29th, 2007 at 1:43 PM
“Tha Maj” makes me like TBL less and less everytime he posts.
August 29th, 2007 at 1:48 PM
I don’t like LeBatard, but I actually felt bad for him. Fox News – or as Olberman correctly calls them, Fox Noise – is such a disaster. Why anyone watches them for anything is beyond me. I give LeBatard credit for going on there and not letting those idiots – especially the guy with his hand up the dog’s ass – trip him up.
Around the Horn? Those Fox Noise jack-asses make Mariotti and Paige sound like Socrates and Einstein.
August 29th, 2007 at 2:04 PM
LeBatard did a very good job in this, but I’m like others in not having any clue why he subjected himself to those buffoons to begin with.
The Jena 6 case is contrived??? Speechless.
I’m sure you also find nothing wrong with this clip either, since you’re probably from the white, male, christian power structure…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysoOB9w0tF4
Fair and balanced, my arse.

You’re not serious, are you?
August 29th, 2007 at 2:50 PM
I just got through watching the video of that panel, and it’s typical Hannity and Colmes. They discuss a topic, bring on one person who they know they will disagree with and everybody else will line up with how they think and beat up on the person with the opposing viewpoint. This is usually more of Hannity’s calling card than Colmes, but every now and then he will also get in the mix. If you’re familiar with this show or any other show for that matter on this network, you’re not really all that surprised by what happened on this show. The only time they invite black panelists on their show is if they are staunch conservatives who will criticize black leaders like Al sharpton or Jesse or extreme radicals like representatives like the New black Panther Party who are usually so off-kilter they even embarass me. I think Lebatard said it perfectly, black people aren’t mad at the prosecution of Vick, but it’s the extreme persecution that continues to bother us. If you can’t see that Nolan, it’s because you don’t want to see it.
August 29th, 2007 at 2:56 PM
Ellen,
A couple of questions. So Hannity & Colmes should only bring on African-Americans that disagree with the hosts? Also, why should they only bring on African-Americans to present counterpoint arguments? Only bringing on African-Americans to present counterpoint arguments, in my view and others, would perpetuate the myth that African-Americans blindly defend Vick on the basis of race when, in reality, a lot of African-Americans (like Swann and Jason Whitlock) say race played zero part at all, while there are white people out there who don’t discount that race played a factor.
BTW, I didn’t see anybody playing the race card when Quintell Woods of the Portland Trailblazers was involved in dog-fighting.
August 29th, 2007 at 3:01 PM
Chris P,
You obviously don’t watch the show regularly because they have Al Sharpton, Charlie Rangel, Mtnume, and Juan Williams (off the top of my head) on the show all the time to present counterpoints to Hannity. Also Chris…if race played a huge factor, then why didn’t the media “persecute” Quintell Woods of the Portland Trailblazers when he was involved in dog-fighting. You’re wrong-doings will get the coverage it gets on the basis of celebrity, not race. That, Chris, is what you don’t want to see my friend. =)
August 29th, 2007 at 3:02 PM
Maj,
Which particular aspect of the Vick case would you like my opinion?
August 29th, 2007 at 3:04 PM
LOL, I should check my grammar next time. My bad.
August 29th, 2007 at 3:09 PM
Also Ellen,
My beef wasn’t with your reporting because, quite frankly, I don’t read your website since it’s virtually a witch-hunt, one-sided bias “reporting” against Fox News. My beef was TBL’s portrayal of Fox News not bringing on any African-Americans because, like I referenced in another post, H&C have tons of African-Americans with different opinions on their show that elicits lots of emotion, which results in more people watching it. There’s a reason Fox News gets the ratings it does. =)
August 29th, 2007 at 3:23 PM
“My beef wasn’t with your reporting because, quite frankly, I don’t read your website since it’s virtually a witch-hunt, one-sided bias “reporting†against Fox News.
don’t you think that’s a biased, one-sided statement, since, as you claimed, you don’t read her blog?
August 29th, 2007 at 3:27 PM
“don’t you think that’s a biased, one-sided statement, since, as you claimed, you don’t read her blog?”
When your selling point is “we watch Fox News so you don’t have to”, what do you think?
August 29th, 2007 at 3:33 PM
i would thank them. they are obviously batshit crazy.
August 29th, 2007 at 3:33 PM
Who is John Ellis?
August 29th, 2007 at 4:02 PM
My apologies Nolan, and you are correct. Al Sharpton is a regular guest on Hannity & Colmes, and other prominent African-Americans like Charlie Rangel and Kwesi Mfume have also been on there as well. I don’t consider Juan Williams a friend of the black community as a whole simply because more often than not he chooses to be blind to the continuing persistent subtle racism that occurs in this country on an everyday basis, and usually supports laws and lawmakers who are not friendly to the black community. Trust me, if he changed his tune tomorrow and started being more liberal and more outspoken on how the real issues in “Black america” are being ignored by the very network he frequently guests, his face would not be very popular around there for long. As to your point of bringing on only African-Americans with a dissenting opinion, that is not something that I would want to see either. I think it’s good to hear how both sides in our community are thinking and more importantly what they are doing. The point that I am making is that more often than not, when they have panels like the one Lebatard was on, they often seem one-sided and on that particular show they didn’t even bother to invite a black radio talk show host from Atlanta, who could have either backed up Boortz’s assertion or given a dissenting opinion. It’s not about inviting people on the show who will only stress one viewpoint, but it’s about having a show that is well-balanced in the diversity of it’s guests as well as their guests opinions.
August 29th, 2007 at 4:23 PM
Thank you, Chris P.
“As to your point of bringing on only African-Americans with a dissenting opinion, that is not something that I would want to see either.”
I was really posing this to the NewsHound people because you could very well conclude from their account/interpretation that they were bothered with Lynn Swann opposing the other African-American gentleman. As Ellen put it:
“Furthermore, there was just one African American, James Mtume there to advocate on behalf of blacks who feel there’s a racial component. Both hosts strenuously disagreed plus they had Lynn Swann on to “balance†Mtume”.
That’s easily how I can come to the conclusion of my earlier point.
August 29th, 2007 at 5:33 PM
@The Maj
By the way, he’s definitely doing that dog.
August 29th, 2007 at 6:15 PM
Actually if you listen to this clip you hear the real reason why LeBatard went on the show…If you listen carefully he says “Horsemuffins” while someone else on the panel is talking which is his radio show’s merchandise site – http://www.horsemuffins.com – where they sell crappy items for his Miami radio show fans. It really is the funniest sports show on the radio.
The website is a complete flop so as a fan of his show I’m getting the name of the website on here (although it’s a total crap-fest).
August 29th, 2007 at 9:48 PM
wow. can’t we go 5 seconds without going left/right.
fox is conservative.
msnbc is liberal.
bbc/npr are moderate.
now can we stop the bickering.
August 29th, 2007 at 9:57 PM
Who is John Galt?
August 29th, 2007 at 10:51 PM
Sorry Purdue Matt. I’d hate to keep you from coming to TBL, but there’s always LGF.
August 29th, 2007 at 10:59 PM
I don’t watch any news on tv, but after listening to them berate Dan for his comparison to the reaction against Strawberry and Gooden he forgot one person who would reveal the bias. Steve Howe was arrested for the same drugs how many times? He was suspended from baseball seven times. Most people don’t even remember him or the fact that he was white. If Manning or Brady were brought up for the same charges, they would receive the same penalty. But it wouldn’t receive the same coverage as Vick is getting.
August 30th, 2007 at 12:19 AM
Ummm, yeah they would. You’re discriminated on the basis of celebrity, not race. Quintell Woods was in dog-fighting, but I bet 95% of NBA fans don’t have a friggin clue who Quintell Woods is.
August 30th, 2007 at 12:50 AM
fyi, it’s Qyntel
August 30th, 2007 at 9:44 AM
Chris P
I have to disagree with your assessment of Juan Williams. Just because he leans toward the right does not mean he’s not ” a friend of black people. He doesn’t attempt to portray black people as victims in every instance and believes black folks should accept more responsibilty for their own lives. Which isn’t all bad in my opinion.Check out his book titled “Enough”.
