Poop and Scoop and Fantasy Football: Who is Matthew Berry?
Uncategorized August 31st. 2007, 12:10pm
The Fanhouse has sent a spy up to Bristol, deftly goose-stepping in the hallowed halls and jotting down notes and blogging when time permits. And he’s conducting interviews, too. Here are a few of the things Michael David Smith has learned: ESPN wants to make fantasy geek Matthew Berry a star (more on this guy in a second), video is of the utmost importance (we touched on this during the EIC search), and on the whole, ESPN staffers like Deadspin.
As for Berry: after Colin Cowherd happened, we received a random note – PLEASE WRITE A POST TELLING MATTHEW BERRY TO STOP BRINGING HIS DOGS INTO THE OFFICE. We held off on turning it into a post, simply because we had no way to tell if this Berry fellow had a dog or not. We still don’t know if he does, but we’ll post the rest, anyway: according to this tipster, Berry brought his dog into the office on weekends (this was several months ago, mind you), and on more than one occasion, the dog took a dump on the floor in the office. Our tipster added that Berry refused to clean it up. Again, we weren’t able to verify any of this, but putting it out there in hopes that someone can confirm it.
One interesting nugget our tipster left us at the time – everybody at ESPN loved Berry (for whatever reason), and Mr. Fantasy “had the run of the place.€ Hey, more power to the guy.
In other news, ESPN 360 is back! Sweet.

There is no way a guy can get away with bringing his dog into the office and then refusing to clean up when said dog lays down the duece on the floor.

I don’t see it. Besides that it is not like it was Chris Berman’s dog or something…it is the fantasy guy. He might be good but how big of a deal can someone become by telling you to make Tomlinson the 1 pick or to start Josh Beckett because he is racking up the wins.

Fantasy is massive and will only get bigger because people will pay for online content. Fantasy football is probably a multi-billion dollar business at this point.
ESPN wants to make money … and if you saw what happened with You Tube, money is in the video and fantasy sports. You make like all your ESPN writers … but are you going to pay extra just to read them? Probably not. But for fantasy, young people will (not me, though).

Two years ago, on the local ESPN radio affiliate, Matthew Berry insisted that Darin Erstad was a good hitter. Darin Erstad!
Credibility shot.

TBL…the beauty of fantasy to me is that you can set up a league for free. I mean I know a few hard core guys…but most of the Fantasy people I know have a private league and do side bets. To me it generates more money with web hits than anything. That’s why Yahoo does so well. If the goal is to get more advertising from fantasy, fine but don’t expect the masses to pay for it. I understand the niche but I believe the accessibility of it is more important to it’s success than the actual thrill of playing it.

I like the guy, not that it isn’t easy to standout at the 4letter. He’s a lot like Simmons used to be, funny and not full of himself. I’ve read worse fantasy info, which usually falls into two catagories: he thinks like you do, so he’s a frickin genius or you’re 180 apart, so he’s a no-nothing hack.

The thing about this is, fantasy players aren’t just lackadaisical slouches who don’t really care. They check on trends, stats and everything else just like this Berry guy would.
In other words, he’ll be “Who’s Now” for a hot second, then drizzop like it’s hizzot.

Remarkable constraint not mentiong Jemele Hill reads this site TBL. Makes me wonder, does she comment here too?
I’m apathetic towards Berry. His ‘analysis’ doesn’t bother me, nor does his attitude. I’m curious as to who he likes in his fantasy gay porn league however.

He wrote for Married with Children. That’s good enough for me.
