Recapping a Nutty Saturday

Awesome day to be a sports fan. If you were at the beach for the holiday weekend and didn’t have a TV or radio by your side, here’s what you missed:
* Michigan choking at home against Division I-AA App State. The 5th-ranked Wolverines suffered a historic 34-32 loss, and had two field goals blocked in the final three minutes of the game. Lloyd Carr, it’s been real, pal.
* In his second career start, Red Sox rookie Clay Buchholz no-hit the Orioles in Fenway. Earlier in the day, Yankees rookie Ian Kennedy beat the Devil Rays in his first start. The Mariners have lost eight in a row, and are now two back of the Yanks in the Wild Card hunt.
* At the US Open, No. 2 seed – and defending champ – Maria Sharapova lost to some Euro you’ve never heard of. Also, cameltoe.
* The remainder of the college football day can be summarized thusly: Cal looked great and DeSean Jackson is a sight to behold on punt returns; quarterback-less Notre Dame has that 5-5 look after getting hammered by Georgia Tech, and you wonder if they’ll come down as hard on Weiss as they did on Willingham; Colt Brennan has a bizarre, yet cool new haircut, and it may or may not have helped him throw for over 400 yards and six TDs in the first half as national darling Hawaii rolled.
* Team USA destroyed Puerto Rico, 135-91 and to nobody’s surprise, the LeBron-led Americans are headed to the Olympics.

Wow-it’s rough when you’re season’s over before it really begins. And Wolverine fans talk shit about how Michigan State lost to Central Michigan a few years ago. See ya, LLoyd!

Yeah they should just fire him now, whats the point in waiting? Everyone knows its gonna happen at the end of the year… and I’d like to say again that Clay Buchholz’s no hitter was one of the coolest things I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. Everybody with NESN that missed it, they’re playing the game again after the post game today so check it out.

I definitely think Notre Lame overreacted to the Weis extension, but Charlie had a LOT of leverage, namely Notre Lame on the brink (at the time) of national power and the NFL was calling. Considering his last couple of recruiting classes, I think they’ll keep him around. I don’t think they can afford not to with what they’ll owe him.

btw, I didn’t necessarily agree with the Willingham firing either. Unless there’s outright catastrophy, coaches need at least 4 years to get their system and players in order. I’m just glad my Hokies didn’t clip Beamer at the end of ‘92 (when he was already 6 years in I think).

The biggest story hands down is that a 23 y/o in his second Major League start throws a no-hitter in the middle of a pennant race at a sold-out Fenway Park.
Not that the D1-AA champs beat a vastly overrated U of M squad, not the very silly first week of college football (45-0, 73-10, 56-7, 38-3, 49-3, etc.), not the tennis match no one cares about, and definitely not that the US men’s basketball team made it to the Olympics (SHOCKER!).

Sorry. Appy St. beating UM is the biggest story. Rookies have thrown no-hitters before, the Red Sox aren’t really in a pennant race (they’ve got the division locked down), and no I-AA team has ever beat a ranked I-A team. Appy St. is the story of the weekend hands down.

Not a pennant race? Tell that to Red Sox fan for the last month. Appy St. is a legit program. Add that on to Michigan performing poorly on special teams, being out-coached, and losing a decent amount of talent after 2006, and this this adds up to not being a total shock.
Again, it was his second ML start.
