App State, Not a Cupcake
Uncategorized September 5th. 2007, 1:44pm
Hope this post doesn’t make you too hungry. But those damn things look mighty good. Interesting piece in the Morning Call Tuesday about ESPN’s Gameday crew. This writer turned back the clock to Saturday morning, about 10:30-ish, when Herbstreit and Fowler ripped Michigan … for scheduling cupcakes.
‘What’s going on with this scheduling?” host Chris Fowler asked. ”In the Big Ten, they used to play people.
”Now, Appalachian State is a good I-AA team, they’ve won a couple of championships,” Fowler continued, ”but they gotta go to the Big House.”
”So you’re giving them a chance today in the Big House?” Kirk Herbstreit asked, mockingly. ”[Michigan quarterback] Chad Henne, he could set a record today unless they take him out of the game. … This is a team, I think, they keep talking about they’re on a mission collectively. Well, it starts today against poor ole Appalachian State.”
In fairness, it’s a damn good thing we didn’t preview this game Friday. Probably would have said the same thing.

Couple things:
1) Michigan’s coaching staff handed that game to Appalachian State. They went for 2pt conversions when they didn’t need to, and they didn’t pick up on the Mountaineers’ blocking scheme for two consecutive field goal attempts.
2) After watching the game, it’s clear App State is much more talented than any of the crap teams in the MAC.
3) I wish App State had a chance to play some other contenders in D1 (say, a Rutgers or Boise State) so we could see if this was a fluke or if they’re really that good.

Herbie probably feels like he has to be overly complimentary of Michigan as to not appear to be the complete OSU homer that he is (wasn’t it him last year who called Steve Breaston “worthless” on his Columbus radio show last season?)

Sportgal- They had to go for two on both those attempts. In hindsight maybe they shouldnt have gone for one on the first one but there was like 30 seconds left in the 3rd and considering Henne was awful in the redzone they probably couldnt think they were going to get a stop and TD. The first one would have put them down 3 in very late in the 3rd and the second one would have put them up 3. I think the issue is more of how Michigan couldnt even run any semblance of football play on either of them ( Henne drops the snap, running back falls down).
I’m glad I got to see it live though..Viva Directtv!

I’m just glad to see you guys repping my hometown paper!! As for the ganmeday crew, they are known for outrageous comments, and this comment was probably one of the least outrageous said on the broadcast, Corso was a mess…anyway Michigan sucks, can’t wait for PSU to roll over Clausen and follow it with a beatdown of the mighty wolverines, hopefully Chad Henne realizes the mistake he made by not going wiht JoePa! FIGHT ON STATE!

How soon before these big schools start scheduling D2 schools? I’m only half-kidding.

Sportsgal- As a former baseball player in the MAC, needless to say I’m a bit miffed by your lame statement about my former conference. No its not the SEC, but look around the NFL, Roethlisburger/Pennington/J Taylor/Dwight Smith/B Leftwich/A Gates, the list goes on. I know of 3-4 MAC teams that would beat Appy St. on a consistent basis.
Now, I’m sure the MAC wont you bad mouthing them, as long as you go back to playing powder puff, wearing birkenstocks, loving the bullshit that is Title IV, and kissing your tiger beat poster of Joey Lawrence, but please for my sake, keep the MAC out of your weak opinions.

hey super5, i’m right down the highway from you
September 5th, 2007 at 2:43 PM
TomSellecksMustache:
Title IV???
What does the Protection of Borders section of the Patriot Act have to do with college sports?
Surely you don’t mean Title IX (Equal Opportunity in Education). An ignorant mix-up like that would have made your belittling of Sportsgal sound stupid and poorly thought out.

rs27,
The only reason they had to go for two the second time is because they went and blew it the first time. The end of the third quarter is too early to think you MUST go for two because there is just too much that you won’t be able to predict to think that only a SHOT at being up three and maybe being only up one is better than almost a SURE thing at being up two.

Um, TSM, I went to a MAC school. My school got creamed by Kansas. KANSAS! And they were the fucking MAC champions last year! There are about 3-5 schools in the MAC that put out a competitive football team every year. Toledo, Miami of Ohio, Northern Illinois, CMU, et al would not have been able to go into the Big House and beat Michigan. It’s called reality, dude. Look into it.
As for a “weak” opinion, please tell me how it’s weak. Is it because I said they didn’t need to go for 2pt conversions and one guy said I was only half right? You can’t dispute the fact that Big 10 football teams shouldn’t have consecutive field goals blocked by any team, much less a 1-AA team!

sportsgal earns the right to make out with me for using rutgers as an example of a contender. nice work.
i think the telling thing about these comments was what herbstreit was saying on sportscenter last night. when asked if this loss meant carr’s job was in jeopardy, herbie basically laughed it off. he put for the (ridiculous) notion that michigan can run the table and win a bcs bowl. he spoke very highly of michigan the whole time (will play well against oregon, can still run the table, yada yada yada) and it makes me wonder if that “analysis” was so glowing because of his ohio state roots and not wanting to seem biased, despite what that picture from the national title game showed.

Central stinks 1st off.
2nd Dont think I dont get your argument about that game, but to shit on the MAC was my only problem with it. Throw out the sunbelt, WAC, MWC, or CONF-USA if you want but leave my beloved MAC alone.
And Cole. Are you really that guy? It was an obvious typo, but you referenced back to your US history book and looked up my typo for what reason? Do you maybe want to impress sportsgal and ask her out on a date?
Before you do, remember to ask your mom if you can borrow her car, k buddy!
September 5th, 2007 at 3:01 PM
GameDay didn’t ill-predict as much as Michigan gouged mule balls.
September 5th, 2007 at 3:07 PM
sportsgal! i just realized who you are! your breasts ARE conclusive!
September 5th, 2007 at 3:16 PM
The MWC is the best conference in America!! They won a little thing called the Fiesta bowl in 2005. The WAC is the best conference in America!! They won a little thing called the Fiesta bowl in 2007.
I dont want to call out TSM because he might belittle me and make ignorant comments..TSM- you are the BEST!!
I never thought I’d say this but i miss jaythemosthated.
I still think Michigan should have gone for two late in the 3rd because they had shown no true ability at that point to consistently stop App state. App state kicked a field goal and missed one in the 3rd..
September 5th, 2007 at 3:26 PM
Mr. Selleck’s Mustache, keep it coming…Sportsgal, you suck, the Mac is strong, and consistently puts NFL talent on the field, App state winning this game was a fluke, I know Michigan is overrated, but teams like App State don’t have the depth to play multiple D1 teams a year, that would be a complete joke
September 5th, 2007 at 3:29 PM
oh, and TBL — it takes balls to criticize fowler and herbie for considering Appy a cupcake before the game when you called them “lowly” after the game.
September 5th, 2007 at 3:33 PM
Listen, I love the MAC, I have nothing against them, but it’s a fact that the MAC is no football powerhouse conference. They do a great job in basketball and even baseball, but they suck at football. Marshall might be the only team that could say they’re good at football, but they haven’t done anything impressive in about 6 or 7 years.
Thanks for giving my breasts a shout out, Lozo! They appreciate it!
September 5th, 2007 at 3:36 PM
Michigan sucks.
Applachian State is small.
My favorite conference is overrated.
My favorite conference is underrated.
Does that about cover everything?
September 5th, 2007 at 3:45 PM
Maybe my last lines should’ve read:
Your favorite conference/team is overrated.
My favorite conference/team is underrated.

nothing to do with this story but i just figured i would drop some knowledge, Mattew Berry(dog enthusiast) dropped the blog name on today’s fantasy podcast, not really pissed or anything and gave you guys some credit for getting part of the story right.(he claims the dog never shat, thats past tense for shit right?)
September 5th, 2007 at 4:09 PM
Ummm, Appy St. is a cupcake. Look at their recent games against sub-par I-A teams where they got handled to put it nicely.
September 5th, 2007 at 4:24 PM
Mustache Man – obviously it was a typo, I was just having a little bit of fun. It’s just college sports, I figure we can all joke around every now and then.
And besides, my mom allows me to use the car any time I want now – thank you very much…
September 5th, 2007 at 4:33 PM
But, you still were campaigning for a date with sportsgal right?
Just a little bit maybe?
Kudos on the car thing too, you’re lucky to have one. I ride a bike to work every day. its a pedal bike too.
September 5th, 2007 at 4:36 PM
What I think this (the appy state win) shows is that for the last couple of years Michigan has run up a nice regular season record in a weak conference, and when they finally have to play a big time program in a bowl game they get their asses handed to them. Then when they have a ‘div 1-AA’ school come in to their house, they think all they have to do is throw their helmets on the field to win. Yes, I am a Michigan State fan, and I despise U of M, but they have the type of talent that State fans drool over, and they waste it. They ought to come close to running the table every year.
September 5th, 2007 at 4:51 PM
rs27- appreciate it, glad to have someone else lovin to hate me… most of the posts the last couple of weeks have been so weak that i havent even bothered bringin the heat. but i aint goin nowhere, trust me…
September 5th, 2007 at 5:06 PM
ok, maybe you’re right about the whole date thing. After all, it’s tough meeting women when you spend all of your time in your parents’ basement checking out the sports blogs.
So in closing, my opinion, MAC schools are good – probably their best teams would be middle of the road in some of the BCS conferences for football.
September 5th, 2007 at 5:39 PM
Since none of you went to a former 1-AA school ,I really don’t think you realize how big of an upset this was. Ap State is the class of 1-AA along with the University of Montana Grizzlies. I watched Ap State in person demolish the Griz last year. And although they have some speed burners they have no where near the size or skill that a Michigan or even one of those shitty teams from the MAC has on their rosters.
