^Agreed. It’s not necessarily that the big boys come out with better content. It’s just that they’re bigger so they have more connections, and also they can buy out the successful underground blogger if needed. The only way the big sports companies blow this is if they fight blogs and do their best to avoid them.

On the subject of what MCBias said, I’d compare Mottram with Kurt Cobain out of SubPop Records in the late 80s. When Nirvana left Sub Pop, they hit big, and the underground grunge scene blew up, anihilating mainstream music. Eventually most of the grunge acts were signed, money was made, and Blind Melon came out. The world went downhill from there. I think that makes sense.

Good luck Jamie. Glad to see Yahoo! pick up their game. With the acquisiton of Silver and Mottram, they’re becoming relevant.

I agree with Mr. Mottram on his views about ESPN.com except on MLB blogging. I consider some of Buster Olney’s posts to be blog-like. ESPN seems to be taking a more ‘respectable journalism’ approach to their blogs (see Mosley’s Hashmarks and Olney). ESPN doesn’t want to seem irreverant to their content providers (MLB, NFL, NASCAR, College FB and BB). ESPN has spent so much time courting major sports, they’ve become beholden to their interests. I’m sure ESPN also thinks they would lose even more credibility with their MSM friends like Mushnick. ESPN is just playing it safe. So is Fox Sports.

Fox is waiting to see what the blog market looks like, then they’ll co-opt it. Can’t say Fox is original and inventive (that takes money on R&D, something Fox wants others to provide for them).

The big boys are going to take over the blogging game at this point; amateur hour is almost over. It’s a natural progression of every industry; lots of fragmented mom-and-pop shops at first, and then consolidation occurs until there’s just a few big players. And don’t think Fox Sports and ESPN are as asleep at the wheel as it seems so far. No, it’s not like small bloggers like me are going to go “bankrupt” and cry as our sitemeter hits zero, ha, but I’m just saying that blogging as we know it is going to change.
