Finally, a Worthy Billboard*
Uncategorized October 15th. 2007, 1:04pm
Great, great stuff here from the Detroit Free Press: Jalen Rose has put up a billboard at 7 Mile on the West Side of Detroit to honor the 15-year anniversary of the Fab 5. Sure, it reeks of “PLEASE LOOK AT ME! I STILL MATTER, DAMMIT!” but we hope this isn’t the beginning of a trend. Next summer, it’d be awfully weak for Scott Norwood to put up a Billboard in Buffalo, reminding everyone that 1993 was end of their Super Bowl-losing era.
Anyone know where Ray Jackson is pumping gas these days? Probably somewhere with Dante Calabria and Ala Abdelnaby.
Catching Up With … Jalen Rose (Free Press)
*Please understand we have been, and always will be, in the tank for the Fab 5. We were young and impressionable and they captivated us with their saggy shorts and black socks and cocky attitudes.

typical michigan…whoohoo, look, we cheated. then they get their panties in a bunch when jim harbaugh says their academic requirements are lax, esp when over half the team is going to the “prestigious university of michigan” for sports and leisure studies.
at least us buckeyes admit we just want football players.

Jalen, Juwan, and Webber never really amounted to consistent players
always ups and downs and trades and new teams
they were a very intimidating team in college when they came out
i still remember the ass whooping they gave DUKE and everyone else except North Carolina

Dugan Fife is a little sad to see this.

Does this mean that Dan Snyder will put up a billboard near Stadium-Armory commemorating the Washington Redskins and the Smurfs?
Or will he just try to coax Gary Clark and Co. out of retirement to challenge for Brandon Lloyd’s roster spot?

i’m with you guys. i’ll always be in the tank for the Fab 5, probably has to be due to the fact that we were freshman at the same time. still can’t believe the TO that c-webb called, and yes i know he should have been called for travelling right before that. but it still hurts, damn you ncaa.

No boosters died in the making of this billboard.

I am sorry but this is a top 5 billboard in my opinion! I am a gator for life but college basketball made me a Michigan and UNC fan for life because of the fab five.
Oh yeah….DUKE STILL SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

“i still remember the ass whooping they gave DUKE and everyone else except North Carolina”
I still remember them losing to Duke twice in ‘92 including by 20 in the championship game.

Do you know what the Fab 5 and myself have in common?
We have the same number of national championships.

A love/hate fandom of the Fab 5 here. Wow. Didn’t know they were that polarizing.
I, too, was one of the captivated ones.
And Spencer096, the Bucknuts admit thugs and academic buffoons, too. Where does football tie in, by the way?
It’s not like Jalen Rose rented the billboard in downtown Columbus.

That was an entertaining squad, especially with vintage Craig Kilborn doing the highlights on Sportscenter.
Oh Webber, give him the onion and he’ll make you cry…

really just meant to say sports in general, i hurried because i heard my boss walking down the hall.
basically, i think michigan sports and their fans’ attitude is hypocritical and arrogant, and why? at least OSU fans are willing to admit that winning was a priority while UM fans need to put up this hoity exterior so when they lose, they have something to make it appear that they’re saving face. that was my ultimate point.
why would you even put a billboard like this up? its embarassing to the school and the legacy of UM sports. celebrating a bunch of kids who were only there because of backdoor booster deals and hidden incentives? when is andy katzenmoyer going to put up a giant billboard extolling the virtues of pottery and golf class at a place of higher education? or maurice clarett buying billboard space to honor his appreciation for his OSU education? its just dumb, thats all.

Where is Jim Kelly going to place his billboard?

Spencer096,
Embarrasing to UM sports, probably. But fans won’t even forget The Fab 5 and that’s probably really what Rose’s intentions are.
I would venture to say that the majority of UM fans and Fab 5 fans care about the boosters and whatever else has come to light about that team. They just remember the innovative play, superb talent, and obviously clothing style.

Let’s try that again….
Spencer096,
Embarrasing to UM sports, probably. But fans won’t ever forget The Fab 5 and that’s probably really what Rose’s intentions are – to please the fans.

When anyone says the Fab Five, I think of the players, the style of play and clothes, and the change of the guard in College Basketball. Not the other bs that went on. Boosters have been around longer than I can remember (Especially in the SEC). They introduce men to let your nuts BREATHE Dang it and the end of those tight ass shorts!!!!!!!!!!!
October 15th, 2007 at 3:22 pm
all valid points. just as OSU fans probably fondly remember Clarett stripping the ball and helping us win an NC or katzenmoyer on the cover of SI. however those ‘other’ things did come to light and are closely tied to the original phenomenon itself. just because the fab 5 was awesome doesnt give cause for celebration.
my point is that despite the cultural and athletic achievements the fab 5 made, they were a product of boosters with deep pockets and to celebrate an amateur team brought together by money is a joke. if the players hadn’t recieved cash, would they have even all gone to michigan?
are oklahoma fans putting up billboards with syringes on them to honor barry switzer’s glory days? celebrating such bullshit is a slap in the face to the NCAA no matter how many people thought it was cool at the time.

Something else that’s timeless? Webber’s timeout.
October 15th, 2007 at 4:46 pm
TBL, with this posting you’ve broke my heart….
October 15th, 2007 at 6:14 pm
At least UCLA had the decency to win when they were taking Sam Gilbert’s money. Michigan boosters got nothing. I wonder if the NCAA is waiting for Wooden to pass away before they retroactively strip all their championships away.

Pumping gas with Dante Calabria?
Please.
Dante did more than his share of “pumping” …. of Carolina coeds. And he’s still playing professionally in Europe, where he’s made a boatload of money over the past decade. The guy just wrapped up three seasons in Milan playing for Armani. I’d say that’s the polar opposite of pumping gas.
