Ballin’: Welcome to Hell, Yi
Uncategorized November 1st. 2007, 10:14am
Best part of the opening week of the NBA season? The League Pass is free! So we watched a bit of all these games (Gossip Girl was a re-run) and man was it fun.
Chicago 103, New Jersey 112, OT: We have a sinking suspicion that VC will have a lot of 6-for-21 nights (0-for-6 from three) now that he’s got his big contract. The question is – will Antoine Wright always be there to help with the bailout? The Texas A&M product everyone’s been raving about for years scored 21 and Rcihard Jefferson added 29. Bulls rook Joakim Noah notched a DNP.
San Antonio 104, Memphis 101: Manu had 30 as the Spurs won for the second night in a row. Ohio State rookie Mike Conley didn’t play, but another Memphis PG, Juan Carlos Navarro, did. Stat sheet stuffer supreme, Kyle Lowry – we can’t stress how much we like this kid – had eight points, five rebounds and four assists in only 21 minutes.
Dallas 92, Cleveland 74: So Dallas plays defense now? Or maybe the Cavs (36 percent) just can’t shoot. Jason Terry led everyone with 24 points and the Mavericks held LeBron to 2-for-11 shooting and forced him into five turnovers in an terribly boring game that was never close. We heard Charles Barkley say on PTI that he doesn’t expect the Cavs to reach the playoffs this year and after watching a few minutes of ugly Cleveland basketball … yeah, we’re not going there 48 minutes into the season.
Milwaukee 83, Orlando 102: Question – Why was rookie Yi Jianlian in the starting lineup? Answer – Because the Bucks signed a deal with the devil to play the kid 20+ minutes a night. Result: He got abused by Orlando’s frontline of Rashard Lewis, Hedo Turkoglu and Dwight Howard (total: 66 points, 23 rebounds). Yi fouled out and scored nine points.
Washington 110, Indiana 119, OT: Well, the Wizards are going to need to play some better defense. Mike Dunleavy (25 points, 12 rebounds) and Danny Granger (20-13) turned in unreal performances as Indy shot 13-for-29 from downtown. Gil Arenas led everyone with 34 points, including a sweet step-back triple to send the game to OT. Caron Butler missed three of four FTs down the stretch and had eight turnovers.

I love Orlando. You guys were getting on Nelson, but I think he’s going to be a good PG. I also think Howard is going to have a break-out year and continue his climb to being a dominant player. I don’t have them winning a championship any time soon, but they definitely make the playoffs and continue to improve. Howard is a stud, Nelson is going to be a real solid PG, JJ will continue to improve and if Turk can consistenly contribute, I see this is a real competitive team.
What was worse last night? The Cavs performance or their god-awful orange retro’s? Please, I like retro’s once in awhile, but those are just “blam” out there, in your face.

This Yi thing is going to get so much better. It’s one of the two or three reasons (along with Durant and maybe watching Phoenix once in a while) I even pay attention to the NBA.

Can’t believe the Wizards lost to a depleted Pacers team, I know it’s only one game but not a good sign.

You have to worry about Cleveland. They can’t get up for Opening Night..at home…on National TV? They were not good. Over/under on number of games until Mike Brown gets fired–40.

I told y’all the pacers wouldn’t be as bad as your pre-season preview said. It’s like Arenas said last night, look what happens if you just let these guys play. I was a big fan of Carlisle, but his style of play didn’t work out with the personnel he had last year. By no means were these performances “unreal,” you’ll see more of this.
November 1st, 2007 at 10:32 am
you mean only 40 games until our retard head coach who LOVES to try and get square pegs into round holes is fired!?!?!?!!??! THANK FUCKING GOD. get that fucker out of here.
a lot of local people say its asinine to knock a coach who has 2 consecutive 50 win seasons and just took us to the NBA finals…i think its asinine to have a runaway freight train and have him play half court offense and then bitch and moan when the team starts runnin up and down the floor.

Even if Mike Brown finds a way to miss the playoffs … can you fire a coach who just took you to the NBA Finals?
It’s not like the front office gave him any help why everyone else got stronger.

Was at the Pacer game last night, good energy in the building, although it was only about 3/4 full. 119 points, in one game!? Hell, it took 3 games under Carlisle to score that many.
Rest assured, the margin of error is just too thin with this team, but it was fun to watch. Hopefully it continues.

What happens first: Bulls cave into the Lakers’ demands or the Lakers cave into Bulls’ demands?

The Cavs are a joke, and they were a joke last year. They had the most favorable playoff schedule fall in front of them that I had ever seen, and Lebron showed up for a few games in the Detroit series after being incredibly unimpressive in the games prior, and suddenly he is the next MJ. I expect a huge sophomore slump.
I also like Orlando coming into this year. I think Howard is going to be a great player. He is the type of player the East has been without for so long, and once he refines his game, could really dominate.

Wizards didn’t look great, but for the Arenascism to be there despite him clearly favoring the knee is a good sign.
Until it gives out on him.

Lakers…If I am the Bulls, I do not trade Deng. I don’t care that you’re getting Kobe. If you give up Deng, Gordon, Thomas and Noah for Kobe, I promise you, the Bulls will not win any time soon.
I end the Kobe talk if I am the Bulls. Keep the young roster. Try to develop an inside threat. That is all they are lacking. A bit of perimeter defense and a solid, inside threat. They don’t need Kobe, with Deng or without Deng.

Is there a more detestably whiny coward in all of sports than Manu Ginobili? Watching the Spurs makes me physically sick. People can bitch all they want about cornrows and tattoos and brawls in the stands…if you ask me, that little prick is what’s REALLY wrong with the NBA these days.
And he looks like Bronson Pinchot.

This just in…the Bucks suck. Wait, that was just in 5 years ago.
November 1st, 2007 at 10:42 am
Totally agree that Bulls need to leave their team alone, and SeanJean wouldn’t LeBron be well beyond a sophomore slump when is playing in what I believe is his fourth year?
November 1st, 2007 at 10:43 am
I think any coach that misses the playoffs in the Eastern Conference should be fired. Okay, maybe not. MOST should get fired.
November 1st, 2007 at 10:46 am
I meant the Cavs to have a sophomore slump after arriving on the scene as a “contender” last year. Not Lebron.
I also agree the the Bulls would be no better off with Kobe.

Hey Robot M. Nixon
Simply solution: Don’t watch the Spurs!
Because the Spurs are not about the change the way they play.
November 1st, 2007 at 11:03 am
The Wizards lost their first 8 road games last year, by the All Star Break they were in first place in the East. Give it time.
November 1st, 2007 at 11:06 am
Although my opinion is biased due to my Michigan upbringing. I can’t stand how LeGlobal-Icon was whining after his third foul call last night. His face screamed “How you gonna call that on me? I am LeBron James!!” He really hasn’t accomplished much in the NBA… He is great and unique and gifted, but there has been many players in the NBA with great, unique and gifted talent that never had anything handed to them. The finals last year were a joke. If the Pistons had made it in I could almost guarantee another “unwatchable” series taken to game 7. Oh and that is sarcasm… how can a game 7 world championship be “unwatchable” ???
November 1st, 2007 at 11:28 am
Agree: the Bulls would be FOOLS to trade Deng. As it stands now, they are one of the favorites in the East. They’re a young, athletic, unselfish group.
I can live with trading Gordon or Ty Thomas and Duhon … but Deng? He’s the exactly the opposite of Kobe, which is the kind of player i’d want.
November 1st, 2007 at 11:31 am
If the the Pistons had made it in
Who’s fault is that? Sorry the Cavs couldn’t have been more accomodating and lost. Damn then for playing well enough to win that series. Bastards.
November 1st, 2007 at 11:45 am
Wow, I can’t believe Piston fans are still whining about that series. Losers. The Cavs looked like crap last night. They played flat, couldn’t hit a shot, and worse looked like they didn’t care. Will they miss the playoffs? Come on. Too much talent for that. I’ll agree that some of Mike Brown’s offense is frustrating. But unless they go 10-30 he is not going to be fired.
November 1st, 2007 at 12:25 pm
I don’t think anyone should expect the Cavs to stay on the same level as the other top Eastern teams when the other teams have gotten better while the Cavs at the moment are worse. It should come as no surprise when there are more results like last night.
Barkley says they won’t even make the play-offs. Don’t know about that, injuries will have the biggest say but if 8 of the top 10 teams get lucky with health, I could see it. That team has one decent option. He’s a great player but one isn’t enough.
Its clear Boston is the team to beat. Nobody has come close to beating them yet.
November 1st, 2007 at 12:35 pm
Tough to beat the Celtics when they haven’t played a game yet!
And what’s the deal with that!
November 1st, 2007 at 1:55 pm
The effing Bucks, I’m from Milwaukee and I’m already bored and sick of them. What are the odds that Yi fouls out every game?
November 1st, 2007 at 2:25 pm
“Tough to beat the Celtics when they haven’t played a game yet!”
I didn’t say they had played. Just that nobody had beaten them yet.
Some of you are awful picky.
November 1st, 2007 at 4:26 pm
I agree with NSR. If I was a Cleveland fan, I’d be worried.
However, I don’t understand why Mike Brown gets so much criticism. I think he’s done one of the best coaching jobs in the league. It’s not like he has a lot of talent out there in Cleveland.
November 1st, 2007 at 5:22 pm
Am I the only one who thinks this might be the worst season of Ben Wallace’s career since he ‘arrived’ in Detroit?
November 1st, 2007 at 5:32 pm
Dornoch, we understand what you meant. What we said is that it’s hard for to beat the Celtics when they haven’t played yet. So of course no body has beaten them yet. But they also haven’t beaten anyone either.
