Where’s the Full Court Press for Florida’s Miguel Cabrera?
Uncategorized November 7th. 2007, 1:46pm
Simple answer: He’s fat. Nevertheless, he’s on the market according to SI’s Jon Heyman. Our baseball friend decided to compare the pro stats of Cabrera with free agent Alex Rodriguez up to the age of 24 (just over four full seasons for both), and the numbers are startling:
A-Rod (2,572 at-bats)- .308 average, 148 homers, 463 RBI
Cabrera (2,694 at-bats) – .313 average, 138 homers, 523 RBI
In addition, Miggy’s got him in OBP and the two are about even in slugging. So is Cabrera the next A-Rod/Albert Pujols … minus the rabid fan base and a media market that cares? Another thing to take into consideration – A-Rod was protected in those Seattle days by Ken Griffey Jr. Cabrera? Nobody of nearly that ilk. If the Marlins are going to continue to game the silly MLB salary cap-less system and try and win titles on the cheap (it’s a fine business model if your goal is to make money), then Cabrera will be dealt this winter. Guess we’re just a bit surprised that there’s been very little buzz about a potential trade involving this guy.

I heard the White Sox were hot for him, but they ain’t got shit to trade.
November 7th, 2007 at 1:53 pm
How’s his defense? I saw him purposely jog very slowly to pick up a single that dribbled his way which allowed a run to score (and caused pitcher Scott Olsen to throw a tantrum in the dugout between innings).
November 7th, 2007 at 1:57 pm
As a Phillies fan, i’ve seen him play often his whole career. he basically sucks at defense. he is lazy, and fat and slow. even if he lost weight, he wouldnt be very good at defense. i wonder if he can go back to the outfield, he played there his first 2 years. if not, its off to first base or the AL. Florida would be a .500 team if they had better defense all around. I sincerly believe that.

I think Manny is a better comparison in terms of body type, work ethic and attitude. Miggy can rake, but he’s a little out there.
November 7th, 2007 at 2:00 pm
all i know is that i would take miggy on my team any day of the week. except sunday nights because everyone knows sunday night is football night.
November 7th, 2007 at 2:01 pm
Another point not mentioned in there is that he plays in a division known for being “pitcher’s parks” his own being one of them. While he is a great hitter, his defense is terrible and he is a very lazy fielder. I think that he will probably go to an AL team and become a DH.

wow, instead of an I-Phone, i get an ad for bulls-eye.com with a half naked chick.
Kudos TBL !

There’s been plenty of buzz regarding the Marlins, it’s just not on ESPN so no one knows about it. There’s buzz about him being traded as well as Dontrelle. Depending on what the Marlins decide, Miguel will surely be traded, but Dontrelle is up in the air since he just came off an average season. The Marlins have the potential to be competitive if the owner gets his head out of his greedy ass. Great young catcher, Ramirez, Miguel, Dontrelle. They have a good, young nucleus. Imagine if A-Rod went there, they’d start drawing some fans and who knows what would happen.
My predicition: Both Willis and Cabrera get traded. Marlins continue their shitty seasons, the owner continues to make mad money.

mozatta … linkage?
November 7th, 2007 at 2:11 pm
How do the Marlins make mad dough when they average less per game than some Triple-A minor league clubs?
November 7th, 2007 at 2:11 pm
i’ve been saying for a long time that cabrera is pujols, jr.
November 7th, 2007 at 2:12 pm
Bring Dontrelle home to the Yay Area. A’s need to trade/dump 90% of their roster anyway. 99% if Arod goes to the Angels.

they don’t pay anyone.
when you don’t shell out much cash, you don’t need that much income.
November 7th, 2007 at 2:13 pm
LAA should go after Miggy as they have the prospects and it will cost less than Arod. Rotate him to DH, OF if need be.
November 7th, 2007 at 2:14 pm
Who is this great young catcher you speak of?
November 7th, 2007 at 2:17 pm
If only Cabrera had A-Rod’s post-season track record.
November 7th, 2007 at 2:18 pm
Olivo
November 7th, 2007 at 2:25 pm
@ Big nuts – Revenue sharing helps a lot too.

“Another point not mentioned in there is that he plays in a division known for being “pitcher’s parks†his own being one of them.”
Have you ever been to Dolphin (err Marlin) Stadium? It’s a no man’s land. Here are the dimensions from the marlins website…
Dimensions
Left Field Line: 330 feet
Centerfield: 434 feet
Right Field Line: 345 feet
Power Alleys: 385 feet
Yeah, a real bandbox to play in for 81 games a year, especially when you throw in the 3,000 people that pack the 60,000 seat stadium to get you pumped up!!!
Idiot
November 7th, 2007 at 2:29 pm
olivo a great young catcher? the same olivo that has been dealt like 4 times since he was first compared to victor martinez? whatever.
why try and field a competitive team when your team is based in a city that could give two shits less about baseball despite the fact that you’ve won as many WS as the indians in about 90 fewer years? the pirates have been doing that for years. teams who have no chance give up and only start caring about the bottom line.
the indians did that for years when modell was taking all their revenue from stadium sales. they couldnt afford the high end talent so they just treaded water and stayed in the black.
November 7th, 2007 at 2:39 pm
Have to agree with Spencer. Olivo is 29 and had a .262 OBP last year. .262! His career numbers are .239/.275/.405. Offesnsively, he is a notch above a pitcher.
November 7th, 2007 at 2:41 pm
cabrera would look good in a yankee pinstripe uniform
November 7th, 2007 at 2:42 pm
Me? I’m a Dodgers fan and I’d take Dontrelle first. Great pitching > Great Hitting.
As for Miggy, he’s better suited to go to the AL and be a DH. He can have his batting party and not worry about defense.
November 7th, 2007 at 2:43 pm
I thikn jpq has some reading comprehension issues.
Pitchers’ park means it’s good for pitchers. As in, not hitters.
So don’t call people idiots unless you have some ability to read and understand. Mmmkay?
November 7th, 2007 at 2:46 pm
@irishmafia
Yes, pinstripes are very slimming.
And TBL, protection means very little in actual results…especially when the protection is hitting behind the batter in question. True “protection” is actually the OBP of the hitters in front of the star, this is one of the reasons Ryan Howard is such a stud….he gets tons of RBI chances from Chase Utley being constantly on base ahead of him.
November 7th, 2007 at 2:52 pm
The Marlins owner(s?) is making mad money because the payroll is less than they receive each year in revenue sharing. I don’t think the most recent numbers are out, but I know that as of a couple years ago, they made a profit before a single ticket, concession item, or merchandise had been sold.
November 7th, 2007 at 2:54 pm
jpq,
I am such and idiot because I only looked up these stats before I made that statement.

BFFredo-
Dontrelle is not a great pitcher. He had one exceptional year in 2005, but his 2007 campaign was a struggle to say the least. There have even been whispers of his needing Tommy John surgery soon if his delivery continues to put pressure on his elbow. Watch for the forearm stiffness, that is usually the precursor to elbow problems.
And that is different from the forearm stiffness some of you commenters feel after a session on the computer.
November 7th, 2007 at 3:03 pm
cardzfan…one of the reasons utley’s on base all the time (besides being awesome) is that howard bats behind them. if they weren’t scared of howard, they’d pitch around utley. those two actually complement each other, rather than one “protecting” the other.
November 7th, 2007 at 3:08 pm
Oooooooh, snap. A can’t get any/masturbation reference.
The people comparing Cabrera and Manny are on the right path. He’s a hell of a guy with a bat in his hands, a horror with a glove, and ’special’ in the head.
November 7th, 2007 at 3:19 pm
Dontrelle has beefed up and it’s changed his delivery. He needs a lot of work and I’d rather see him sold to somebody for more than he’s worth than trying to get even money for Miggy.
November 7th, 2007 at 3:33 pm
Miguel gained 14lbs in the time in took for TBL to write this post.
November 7th, 2007 at 3:39 pm
I don’t watch baseball (I rank it somewhere below cricket and slightly above paint drying on the entertainment scale), but haven’t the Marlins won two championships over a relatively short span?
Sure, their business model sucks if you’re a fan of the sport or a player, but it seems to work.
November 7th, 2007 at 3:54 pm
Now batting cleanup for the Yankees…Miguel Cabrera.
November 7th, 2007 at 3:58 pm
Fat,drunk and stupid is no way to go through life son.
November 7th, 2007 at 4:04 pm
TBL, you bring it up, ESPN reports it.

You know Miggy’s a great hitting talent, but there have been several comparisons to Manny Ramirez that say Ramirez is the tireless worker. if that’s true, I’d be afraid to take him on my team b/c he seems like he doesn’t care, and i’d want him b/c if he worked he’d be incredible.
It’d be nice for the Yankees to get him, they’d have to give up two of the three pitching talents they have, plus someone like Melky. Nothing like ruining your future for a guy who will just DH.
November 7th, 2007 at 5:17 pm
XV – It is a brilliant baseball plan. Except for the few down years when the team blows and 5000 people show up for home games.
November 7th, 2007 at 5:34 pm
just because a guy is goofy (manny’s case) doesn’t mean he doesn’t work. manny is a brilliant hitter, and if youve seen his career evolve, youll realize how much better he’s become at hitting. just because he’s a nut in the field doesn’t mean he doesnt spend the required hours in the batting cage getting better.
watch some of his early highlights when he was with the tribe. he almost never pulled anything because his natural swing took everything the other way. now, what was his most memorable HR this postseason? probably the walk off where he blasted K-Rod over the green monster.
He used to be done if someone pitched him inside, but over the years he’s become immune to any particular location and can put any ball wherever it needs to be. you dont do this by sitting on your ass e-bay-ing grills all day.
November 7th, 2007 at 6:04 pm
pkiguy22: I owe you serious apologies. I am the IDIOT!!!! I read the “Olivo is a great catcher post’ and then yours, and definitely read it wrong. My bad… SORRY!!!
jpq (IDIOT)
November 7th, 2007 at 6:07 pm
At this point, I would rather have Cabrera than Rodriguez. Yes, he’s a bit overweight, but it’s nothing a gym membership couldn’t fix. He’s way younger than A-Rod, he has managed to stay out of the spotlight (playing in Florida helps), and he’s represented by someone other than Scott Boras.
So you’re right… If someone can come up with the goods to acquire Cabrera, that should be bigger news than someone breaking the bank for A-rod.
November 8th, 2007 at 10:29 am
Does anyone know the relationship between Joe Girardi and Cabrera?
Seems like the Yankees are perfect.
