Round 8: Blog vs. Newspaper
Uncategorized November 29th. 2007, 1:31pm
Portly Minnesota Twins pitcher Boof Bonser talked to a group of people at a golf tournament. Boof said the Twins were putting together a package to trade him to the Devil Rays. One of these people relayed the news to a blogger. Said blogger ran the item, but instead of saying Boof said it at a golf tournament, it was cited as ‘a source close to Boof.’ A Tampa Tribune columnist picked up the item, called it ‘an internet rumor’ and said it had no shot of happening, without mentioning a source. Hmmmmm. Interesting situation.
Kinda makes you wonder if, perhaps, Minnesota wanted Boof to be included in this Delmon Young deal that just was completed (BIG edge to the Twins on this trade), but the D-Rays demanded Matt Garza. Just a guess. (Oh. We should add that we love Garza. But this fills a need for both teams, and with Francisco Liriano coming back this year, Minnesota loses next-to-nothing while upgrading its outfield after Torii Hunter signed with the Angels. Tampa had an overflow in the outfield, and needed a No. 2 behind Kazmir.)

wrong paper. the idiot columnist was from teh st. pete times, NOT the tribune. the tribune attributed the quote from bonser.

the rays got rid of a cancer in the next albert belle. addition by subtraction.

Garza will not be a #2 behind Kazmir. He hasn’t proven anything yet, other than he can be a moody bitch (very Lohse-esque) if he doesn’t get the calls. I’m excited about Delmon Young already. The weirdest thing about that trade was that the Twins casually threw in Jason Bartlett, their starting shortstop and highly touted “shortstop of the future” of the past couple years. No more “Piranhas” I guess?

I hope (but I doubt) that this ends the Twins shopping Santana. Garza will be a GOOD pitcher, but I think that in a few years we will look back and see that Young was a good addition. The Tribune is also floating the rumor that they are going after Rowand as well. I just hope that they don’t trade away all their pitching for some bats.

boof came from a really bad family situation. he was named after his dad but i guess his dad isn’t too cool of a guy so he changed his name to his nickname.

NDub – the proper questions is: does anyone not find the name boof fucking hilarious?

horrible trade for the twins, especially if santana is leaving this offseason on top of it. trading good young pitching for raging psychotics is never a good idea.

I am sure Young is going to love Minnesota, can’t wait till he hits the nightlife up there. Good times ahead

Jimmy – The blog link (first one) says it was specifically the Tribune. Where are you seeing the St. Pete paper?

Did James Shields leave Tampa? He has a better chance of challenging Kazmir for the #1 than he does having Garza pass him for the #2…

How is this a horrible trade? Garza has a 5 cent head not to mention the fact that he tips his curveball so much that everyone in the ballpark knows it’s coming. And Delmon Young is far from psychotic. It’s been 2 years since the threw the bat and he got benched for dogging it to first late in the year on a horse shit team. I’d let him date my sister if she was into black guys.

Actually it was The St. Pete Times. The blog linked to “tampabay.com” which is actually the website for the Times, not the Tribune.

Delmon Young is a 5-tool player that has never shown three of those tools (power, speed, glove) at ANY LEVEL.
Granted he was only 21, but he had the worst OPS of any right fielder in ‘07. He is a great hitter, but he is a pure line drive hitter and he refuses to show any discipline at the plate. He thinks he is Vlad Guerrero, but he is not. Could he develop power? Maybe, when he learns to wait for his pitch, but even then I cant see him hitting more than 25 a year because of all the line drives. On the other hand he can be a .330 hitter.
He does not steal bases even though he is fast.
Despite one of the top 5 arms in baseball, he is a terrible glove. He takes terrible angles and plays defense while sitting in the right field bleachers (that will be awkward in the Metrodome). He plays way to deep, an indication that he is not comfortable going back on a flyball and as a result way too many balls drop in front of him.
And on top of not running out ground balls (repeatedly which led to a last game benching) he also did nothing but complain when the team asked him to play center for a couple of weeks when others were hurt (Rocco) or threatening baby mammas (Dukes)

i love how young explained it as ‘well you know. .. young people with money’
i could buy that excuse for getting a ridiculous speeding ticket, a drug charge, strip club incidents .. but i fail to see how it explains throwing a bat at an ump

Everytime I see the name Boof I think of Teen Wolf and the dumb bitch who goes in the closet and gets molested by a dog.

Professor – Young will probably be playing in left, unless the Twins don’t get a center fielder involved in any Santana or Joe Nathan trade. Cuddyer’s in right.
The guy undeniably has a ton of athletic ability, it just hasn’t entirely translated into baseball instinct yet, and that takes time. He’s in a good place with the Twins, who have overseen the development of countless everyday guys not just on the Twins, but all over the majors.

tampa’s horrible defense made their pitchers look worse than they actually were, so adding bartlett was a huge plus for the rays. smart trade for both teams.

Damn! Working late and I missed all the fun. I watch a ton of Rays games on FSN (yes, on purpose) and the professor has pretty much hit the nail on the head with Young. The Rays had a surplus of outfielders so it would have been ridiculous not to move one of them and it had to be Young…Baldelli’s always hurt and now worthless, Crawford’s awesome and Upton looked great last year. I am expecting Dukes to go to the Nats any day now based on rumors, so they will have purged the two problem children (yes, Young still has issues). By the way, Garza will start the season #3 behind Kaz and Shields
