Tougher Bird: Jayhawk or Hokie?
College Football January 3rd. 2008, 4:26pm
After Wednesday’s embarrassing debacle, we’ll avoid much talk about Kansas, a team that has one victory over a ranked team (K-State!) and Virginia Tech, a team that has won five games in a row (four against bowl teams!). Guess this one could be the same deal as last night, right? Nobody’s giving Kansas a chance – VT’s defense is too fast, a good defense always trumps a good offense, the Jayhawks schedule was a joke (109th out of 119!), and the Hokies are due for a win, since they have virtually alternated wins and losses in Bowl games since 1998. We’ve got the underdog Jayhawks at +3.5, but we’re not overly confident. If anyone cares, the ACC is just 2-5 in bowl games, and by our count, two of six have covered (Virginia and Wake; FSU was a push). Get your predictions in.
Other linkage to take you through the afternoon food coma …
* Scarlett Johansson stumping for Barry Obama in Iowa! (Tune in to the caucus tonight – discussion tomorrow)
* College basketball … the NBA … and now a blogger! In Iran!
* This is a dream of ours – hooking a 551-pound bull shark, and living to brag about it
* NFL collusion! Brady Quinn is going to kick somebody’s ass …
* And because 12,416 people sent this to us – the beauty queen who took a Nick Nolte-like mug shot
* Not totally safe for work, but then again, not really dangerous – Nicolette Sheridan in a thong on the beach … she’s 44!

So what does that picture of a water buffalo have to do with any of this?
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:31 PM
browns missing the playoffs might have something more to do with derek ‘im supposedly good’ anderson taking a taco bell shit in the bed the last two weeks
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:33 PM
Since when does 2 coaches in the same division knowing each other’s coaching style count as collusion?
Sounds like sour grapes to me…
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:34 PM
Mike Vick is fighting for the remote as we speak
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:34 PM
“beauty” queen.
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:34 PM
WHO THE FUCK CARES ABOUT THIS GAME?
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:35 PM
@ spencer:
those of us still in the running to win our bowl pick ‘em.
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:35 PM
oh.
HOLY SHIT that bitch is ugly.
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:37 PM
I think spencer just blew a fuse.
VaTech big tonight. KU’s O was destroyed by middling Missouri’s D. Our 4.8/40 running back might not even get to the whole. Not sure what they can do against a Top 5 D.
Of course, I didn’t see WVU doing what they did to OU last night.
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:39 PM
Nicole Sheridan looks like she has mushy sweater puppetts.
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:39 PM
Scarlett just needs to learn to not stick her pretty little head in political matters and just keep up her end of the bargain of being disgustingly hot for her fans.
On to the game:
Scarface’s Team > Fighting Mangino’s
If Kansas scores more than 20 points, I’ll be really surprised. That VT defense was near shut down mode towards the end of the year.
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:40 PM
@ Moleman:
You should know by now, Derek Anderson goes by the name:
HORSE BALLS.
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:41 PM
oh i know, i just consider that a term on endearment and his performances when it mattered deserve no such thing
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:41 PM
I don’t like it when chicks wear stupid hats, not sure why, I just don’t.
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:42 PM
Who the hell is Barry Obama? Is that the empty-suit’s new nickname or something?
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:43 PM
i wouldve guessed the old broad in the thong was willem defoe judging by the face
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:44 PM
Baraka just sounds racist for some reason. Even if it is his given name.
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:46 PM
That model chick’s picture screams meth head.
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:47 PM
baraka from mortal kombat?
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:47 PM
@ Mike NYC – Shhhh. Don’t tell Scarlett, she doesn’t know Barry is Barak’s cousin.
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:48 PM
id vote for a presidential candidate with sword-arms.

January 3rd, 2008 at 4:52 PM
I’d sooner vote for M. Bison over Barack.
January 3rd, 2008 at 4:53 PM
spence get a image man cmon

January 3rd, 2008 at 4:57 PM
im a minimalist irish, i prefer the uncluttered life.
come on, M. Bison is a Green Party candidate, he’ll never win.
January 3rd, 2008 at 5:00 PM
I tried to post my avatar, but it doesnt seem to be working. not that it matters, i wont be getting criticized by Irish or anything like that.
January 3rd, 2008 at 5:14 PM
I would take Kansas and the points tonight. The ACC has looked absolutely awful (not shocking) during bowl play.
If anyone thinks there isn’t parity in college football then just look at the bowl standings. Every BCS conference has lost at least twice.
January 3rd, 2008 at 5:14 PM
Yeah I asked for Irish’s help and he thought I was being a wise ass
January 3rd, 2008 at 5:26 PM
Kansas wins cause, I dunno, they just do. This way when TBL posts something about it tomorrow, I can brag, and if I am wrong no one will care anyway.
I think every girl is a “beauty queen” nowadays. What does that even mean anymore. That girl is wackadoo.
January 3rd, 2008 at 5:34 PM
Why doesn’t that coach just go out an play nose tackle?
January 3rd, 2008 at 5:36 PM
Great, now I got “your comment is awaiting moderation” status too
January 3rd, 2008 at 6:11 PM
spencer, Its a picture of Anton Chigur from No Country for Old Men.
January 3rd, 2008 at 6:38 PM
Damn, that’s a big bitch.
January 3rd, 2008 at 6:49 PM
How the F did you guys get avatars? There’s no option to add a picture when I view my wordpress profile. I don’t know anything about HTML or web page graphics, so please, do me a solid and help me out (even though this might be a completely idiotic question).
January 3rd, 2008 at 6:57 PM
Sorry sportsgal, we covered that earlier and its now back to being a secret. You may want to check out Brady and Giselle though…
January 3rd, 2008 at 7:02 PM
OOOOH, I see… I actually worked today and didn’t get a chance to look at many of the posts. Thanks for the tip, I’ll check it out now!
January 3rd, 2008 at 7:06 PM
Sucker, workin, ha, never
January 3rd, 2008 at 7:08 PM
completely off topic, but how the FUCK does Roy Williams keep getting voted to the Pro Bowl? I know that game is a joke but that is absurd.
January 3rd, 2008 at 7:12 PM
Ok, now I’m pissed. I signed up on that gravatar page (using the same e-mail address for both wordpress and gravatar), but my awesome avatar of Sweetness is not displaying. WTF?
January 3rd, 2008 at 7:26 PM
i see sweetness there
a new hope just came on hbo family, if people are looking for something better to watch than this game whenever its on
January 3rd, 2008 at 8:14 PM
Kenny Albert’s bottom row of teeth scare me.
And then some ass called us UK. Ignorant fucker. That’s some quality professionalism there, FOX.
January 3rd, 2008 at 8:25 PM
KC – All the networks have been butchering names: The University of Purdue is my favorite yet.

And in more important news, the democratic vote is split pretty evenly between Clinton, Obama, and Edwards. The religious crazies have come out in droves and are favoring Huckabee.
January 3rd, 2008 at 9:00 PM
CNN: Huckabee wins the Iowa caucus. Mild surprise.
Damaging blow to Romney. I’m in the midst of reading this piece on immigration and the Republican party.
Mike Huckabee is the latest victim of the Republican shift on the immigration issue. We talked on what should have been a happy day for Huckabee. According to at least one poll, he had taken the lead from Romney in Iowa, and was enjoying a sustained burst of positive media coverage. “Oh, man, it’s been unbelievable,†he said in his winning, Gomer Pyle-like voice. “We’re up in New Hampshire and I’ve got more press coming to the events than I’ve got people. I’m not kidding. It’s unbelievable. We have so many people coming we can’t fit them in the places.€ But Huckabee’s excitement was tempered by Romney’s persistent attacks on his immigration record as governor of Arkansas, and he seemed to be grappling with the intensity of the question among Republicans. “It does appear to be the issue out here wherever we are,†he told me. “Nobody’s asked about Iraq—doesn’t ever come up. The first question out of the box, everywhere I go—Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Florida, Texas, it doesn’t matter—is immigration. It’s just red hot, and I don’t fully understand it.€
Romney has not been similarly reflective in trying to discern the source of the issue’s power. Rather, he has quickly and easily adopted the negative code words of the anti-immigration movement—“sanctuary cities,†“amnestyâ€â€”and has tried to attach them to Giuliani and Huckabee. In doing so, he became the first top-tier candidate to seize the Tancredo mantle. My own sense, from talking to Huckabee, a Southern populist, and McCain, a border-state senator, is that they are genuinely appalled by Romney’s tactics, not only because of the damage to their campaigns but also because of the damage they believe he’s doing to the Party’s image. Romney’s communications director, Matt Rhoades, said, “Both Senator McCain and Governor Huckabee have decided that to win in 2008, Republicans need to be more like the Democrats when it comes to illegal immigration. That’s the wrong course. McCain-Kennedyâ€â€”Edward Kennedy was a sponsor of the initial legislation—“was the wrong course. Governor Huckabee’s plan to give tuition breaks to illegal immigrants was the wrong course. America doesn’t need two politicians with records on illegal immigration that are in tune with Senator Clinton.€
January 3rd, 2008 at 9:11 PM
Romney’s fucked now. He’s getting beaten like a redheaded step-mule. Now it’s on to NH, where both major papers ran anti-endorsements of Romney…and McCain is surging.
January 3rd, 2008 at 9:14 PM
Lee Mercer, Jr., friends.
Google him.
January 3rd, 2008 at 9:15 PM
Actually, the really interesting thing is no one knows how the SuperSized Tuesday thing is going to pan out. It’s never been this big before. I assume Rudy and Hillary are counting on Feb. 5 as a firewall, but there’s a month to go before that vote.
January 3rd, 2008 at 9:15 PM
Nice to see Kansas up 10-0. Haven’t seen either score, but did he run that pick back? Fox only showed the pick briefly. Those jerseys are ghastly.
January 3rd, 2008 at 9:19 PM
TBL -
Most KU fans love the red jerseys. Started with hoops in the 80s. I’ve never liked them, but eh, I’m not a fashion guy.
Talib intercept run back 50 yards for a td. Flagged for, “high stepping.” Racist officials. Then, another intercept, short series, field goal. A Talib punt return has us about mid-field. As a KU fan, I’m giddy. I understand the collective shrug from the rest of the nation.
January 3rd, 2008 at 9:22 PM
McCain ‘08
January 3rd, 2008 at 9:24 PM
Wow, this Reesing kid is putting on a show … if they go up 17-0 here, i’ll be thrilled …
VT isn’t a comeback team.
January 3rd, 2008 at 9:25 PM
MSNBC calls IA for Obama. Up 35/31/31 with 71% in.
January 3rd, 2008 at 9:26 PM
Wow. 17-0, seven mins left in the half. Anyone who bet VT knows how I felt LAST night.
January 3rd, 2008 at 9:26 PM
MSNBC also calls the Orange Bowl for KU. Mangino calls for a bucket, he’s gonna throw up.
January 3rd, 2008 at 9:40 PM
A bucket for Manboobs? Extra crispy or original?
January 3rd, 2008 at 9:42 PM
Hey TBL, I know you are into the housing market, the wife and I are in the process of trying to buy a house, any advice?
January 3rd, 2008 at 9:51 PM
Dornoch/TBL – Ditto. The wife, child, and I have outgrown the first house. I’m actually more worried about selling it than buying a house. Good deals abound to buy.
–
Tech figured out they can run on us. Perhaps they are rethinking the 1st quarter suspension of Ore. That cat is running awesome.
January 3rd, 2008 at 9:55 PM
“Wow. 17-0, seven mins left in the half. Anyone who bet VT knows how I felt LAST night”
There are those of us who bet both Oklahoma last night and Va Tech tonight…if my life were a movie this would be the montage where my losing streak keeps going and I eventually end up pawning the gold watch my father left to me on his death bed
January 3rd, 2008 at 10:00 PM
Right there with you Butter. Glad I am not the only one.
January 3rd, 2008 at 10:13 PM
TBL, please, stop getting your political opinion from The New Yorker. They are about as slanted as the DailyKos.
Man these bowls are terrible. Now, if these BCS games had been first round playoff match-ups, they’d be a lot more tolerable . . .
January 3rd, 2008 at 10:22 PM
Virginia Tech gets a TD doing what they do best, special teams.
January 3rd, 2008 at 11:21 PM
Wow, 25 year old beauty queen who is also a law student goes insane because her 44 year-old hillbilly boyfriend dumps her. Now she’s facing time…
January 3rd, 2008 at 11:21 PM
Fuck the Hokies…good thing Letterman’s coming on
January 3rd, 2008 at 11:31 PM
Apparently Kansas was the big dog of the Big 12. Wonder what would have been if they went up against Stoop’s fraud of a team instead of Missouri.
January 3rd, 2008 at 11:37 PM
@ThrowinThreeQuarters: I love the mug shot. She’s hideous in that.
January 3rd, 2008 at 11:57 PM
I wanted to see the whale get doused with gatorade more than anything else in the world. Too bad.
January 4th, 2008 at 7:43 AM
Mangino has a strict rule for the Jayhawks, sugar is a valued resource.
