Ballin’: Big Baby Edition
Hockey, NBA January 6th. 2008, 11:44am
I think my favorite part of the Ballin’ feature is finding some ridiculous variation of whatever theme TBL has been using all week or on that Friday. This weekend you got comic books. Next week, types of birds.
New Jersey 113, Atlanta 107 – Jason Kidd had another triple-double. (10 points, 13 rebounds, 14 assists) Does he do this every weekend or is it just because I’m here?
Boston 92, Detroit 85 – The Celtics outscored the Pistons 29-19 in the fourth quarter as Kevin Garnet Ray Allen Paul Pierce Glen “Big Baby” Davis carried them to victory with 20 points.
Chicago 94, Sacramento 93 – According to the box score, Andres Nocioni was the star of last night’s game with 26 points. I’m inclined to believe the box score.
Houston 103, New York 91 – As one commenter pointed out, it was a rematch of the 93-94 Finals. John Starks had nothing to do with this Knicks’ loss though.
New Orleans 118, Phoenix 113 – Steve Nash had 23 points and 10 assists: Pretty good. Chris Paul had 26 points and 10 assists and the win. I bet this would have been a fun game to watch. Too bad Time Warner subscribers don’t get the NBA Network. Damn corporate fat cats!
Portland 103, Utah 89 – The Blazers continue to rail against flash-in-the-pan-edness.
Skatin’ after the jump…
Skatin’: Look At All These Games!
How the hell am I supposed to think up jokes for every single one of those games? There’s 13 of them. I’m going to have to start outsourcing. Instead of recaping each other and saying something clever and adding an “eh” to the end I’m going to highlight my star of the night: Mike Green.
Green had a goal and 2 assists for the Capitals last night overtime win over the Canadians. I feature him because he has a great staff photo. Hockey players always have great hair. It’s a combination of hat-head and being foreign. It can’t be topped, eh.
Here’s the rest of the games:
Detroit 3, Dallas 0
Pittsburgh 3, Florida 0
Boston 4, New Jersey 3
Philadelphia 3, Toronto 2
Ott-ow-ah 4, Tampa Bay 3, OT
Nashville 4, Minnesota 1
St Louis 1, Carolina 0
Colorado 2, New York Islanders 1, SO
Edmonton 3, New York Rangers 2, SO
Calgary 6, Los Angeles Kings 4
San Jose 3, Columbus 2

I was really hoping for a video of skaters wiping out. Instead, hockey. Joy.

Folks in Detroit were saying tickets for that Piston/Celtic game were the hardest to get since 1991.
Big Baby was awesome. 16 points in the 4th quarter on perfect shooting. Even more impressive was his work on the defensive end, covering Sheed. Wallace was having his way in the first half, Baby closed him down in the second. And yes it was Sheed trying to check Baby on the Celtics offensive end.
The Celtics have a Big 4. The fourth guy is just someone different every night. Last night it was Davis who outscored the 7 all stars he was on the court with. The night before it was Tony Allen who scored 20. Other nights it is Rondo, Eddie House or James Posey.
This is an extremely well constructed basketball team. Not many weaknesses.

I was sooo at the Detroit vs. Celtics game. My thoughts: Rasheed is looking old/slow. If RIP isn’t on, we are screwed. Chauncey never misses free throws (except last night). KG was not dominant. Peirce/Allen were non factors and Big Baby got lucky with shots that landed when he was getting a foul, which he earned. He played hard, but the shots fell and it was just lucky… BTW Posey and House are horrific ball players. I look forward to this EC Finals showdown. Hopefully the mob… I mean “Lebron’s great play” doesn’t knock off one of these two teams in the playoffs before they can meet.

House and Posey are horrific, in a Lindsey Hunter, Jarvis Hayes kind of way.

Touche, Dornoch.
Although I will say that even in his old age, Hunter still is a pretty good on the ball defender. Anyway you cut it, it was one of the better games I’ve seen during the regular season in quite awhile. Safe to say these teams are meeting up in the Eastern Conference Finals-unless, like Magglio says, Lebron comes out and beats Detroit. He doesn’t have to have anyone else out there with him, he can do it on his own, you know….

Lebron already beat the Celtic this season so I know what you are saying.
I’m a fan of the Piston bench, don’t get me wrong but in the same way Linsdey Hunter brings attributes, so do Posey and House. Neither are brilliant by any stretch but they have been a big part of the Celtics start, especially Posey. He might look like crap on paper but he is a very good defender who can guard 3 positions and do it very well and he has hit big shot after big shot for the Celtics.
The best part about both the Pistons and Celtics is that all their secondary players realize what their roles are. That is what makes a good team, great and it is half the battle. Zach Randolph is “better” than James Posey but I am quite sure that the Celtics would not be 29-3 if they had Zach instead of James. 20-10 might be a generous guess. Having a 6th man who fits on your team is better than a 4th option who thinks he should be the first.
Just look at the Knicks. They are the exact opposite of Detroit and Boston. They all want to be the guy.

The Hornets are what, 23-11? And they have been on TV what, 21 fewer times than the Heat this year?

Dornoch, you’re right. I have to give the Celts credit because so far I’ve pegged them as the Big Three plus a bunch of scrubs, but they really are a pretty good supporting cast. Now, in a 7 game series I think Detroit would win, but still you gotta give them credit for going into Detroit’s house and stealing one.
