Shark Lovers, Unite!
Sharks January 8th. 2008, 3:59pm
Saw this last week on Deadspin and somehow, it slipped all the way to today. Assuming this photo isn’t a hoax, like the last awesome shark photo … then we have a winner. We’ll tell you something right now – if this isn’t the Photo of the Year, then somebody needs to investigate how Photo of the Year is determined. We can already say, with 100 percent certainty, that when this incredible picture goes up for sale, we will be purchasing it. It’s the kind of photo that will stop you in your tracks when you walk into a room. If we do end up getting it, the menacing shark and his tasty lunch will rank as the second favorite photo we own.

photo of the year is the cop shooting the cow. i leave a lot of comments on here now.
January 8th, 2008 at 4:06 PM
The cow getting plugged is awesome, but the inherent menacing-ness of this shark photo puts it over the top.
January 8th, 2008 at 4:08 PM
What did I miss with some cow getting capped? Anyone link?
January 8th, 2008 at 4:08 PM

The shark pic was taken in 2005, though. This version freaks me out even more.
January 8th, 2008 at 4:09 PM
Both the cow and the kayaker had it coming.

See what happens when you get a normal 8-5 job, Lozo?
January 8th, 2008 at 4:22 PM
The negative about having an 8-5 (or so) job in Denver is that it puts me two hours behind TBL instead of one, meaning I have to make it the last two hours of work without new material instead of just one. I think I may move to the eastern time zone to prevent this problem.
January 8th, 2008 at 4:23 PM
Ben-Same problem here. Only 3 hours of non posting.
TBL- Any chance of a west coast post?
January 8th, 2008 at 4:24 PM
@Ben – Don’t use the East coast feed of the blog.
January 8th, 2008 at 4:26 PM
Fuck the heck are you talking about? I just go to the website?

@Owl – Yeah, I wouldn’t mind a west coast post, the last 3 hours in my cube can be brutal.

That’s the link to the story of the photo. He’s the 2007 BBC photographer of the year, so I imagine he isn’t prone to faking pictures. Look at some of the others on that site. The dude loves him some shark pictures.
January 8th, 2008 at 4:31 PM
Goddamn you CRM, now we must feud like irish and…whomever.
January 8th, 2008 at 4:31 PM
Gotcha. So you’re saying I should stay later in the day and post up around 5 and 6?
January 8th, 2008 at 4:33 PM
We need more pictures of giant squids. Now those fuckers are badass.
January 8th, 2008 at 4:33 PM
To appease those of us in the pacific and western time zones, it would be beneficial to just post until 8pm or so, no big deal, you don’t have a life or anything going on anyway.
I kid, I kid.

January 8th, 2008 at 4:39 PM
Well, i already have no life – 13 posts today. I have no clue how Will at Deadspin used to churn out like 20.
(shameless plug) But, if you West Coasters click on the ads up top, anything is possible.
January 8th, 2008 at 4:45 PM
@TBL – It is Will’s full-time job and you’re just part-time. And did you see how many “closers” he has? I swear between 10 and 12, there’s like 5 different ones.
January 8th, 2008 at 4:45 PM
A post at 5pm, 6pm, 7pm, and 8pm Eastern time would be great.
How many Prilosec free samples (see ad at right) do I have to order to get that?
January 8th, 2008 at 4:45 PM
West coast posting would be awesome.
January 8th, 2008 at 4:46 PM
irish, you tangle with people on here at a pretty decent clip. Didn’t you just finish a bitch fest with someone on here?
January 8th, 2008 at 4:47 PM
all over opinions, yes
what does that have to do with you, nothing at all
have a good day ben
January 8th, 2008 at 4:51 PM
If you could get a cow on the kayak in front of the great white, I’d buy that.
TBL- How ’bout a bi-weekly “West Guest Post”. You have to have some connects on the coast with the women, weather, and the weed, stinky green…
January 8th, 2008 at 4:52 PM
irish, you crack me up. Good day to you as well.
January 8th, 2008 at 4:52 PM
listen, west coast people, you have the good weather and the hot ladies and the awesome pot. the least you could do is let us east coast people set the time shit and dominate the media and stock market.
January 8th, 2008 at 5:01 PM
Much love Irish, much love. Please don’t get too sensitive on me — or sportsgal will have to lend you a pad (I kid! I kid!). We all dogpile — that’s the heart of these threads. I got killed last year when I was a guest poster. Just blast back extra hard I say. We all live anonymously anyway…
January 8th, 2008 at 5:04 PM
@TBL, Charles White announcing the poster: “Now see, that’s a kayak. It floats. And the thing in the ocean, which is blue by the way, is called a shark.” Thats what it was like listening to him last night.
January 8th, 2008 at 5:24 PM
What girl this day and age wears a pad? I’m offended.
January 8th, 2008 at 6:48 PM
i thought this picture was cool: the road to nowhere.
Last Thursday around midnight, an unidentified woman drove her car across the pedestrian bridge that connects the North and South Terraces off Ashford Dunwoody Road. According to observers, although she passed through the narrow bridge, the car couldn’t go up the steps, nor was she able to back it out the way it came. The woman, according to witnesses, stayed in her running car until Friday morning when she was found by staff of the Terraces. Police arrived at the scene later that morning and were able to back her car off the bridge. Observers say that alcohol may have played a part in the incident.
January 8th, 2008 at 6:50 PM
if this doesn’t work, that means no pics.

Sweet picture, for sure, but I doubt it can be real. Maybe it’s just me being cynical, but if that shark is real, it has to be close to 30 feet long. Gotta be fake.
January 8th, 2008 at 9:35 PM
The very biggest great whites only go to about 20 feet so no it isn’t close to 30 feet long.
Compared to the 7 foot kayak, I would say 13 is about right.
