Ballin’: The Pistons Are Not Dead
NBA January 11th. 2008, 9:33am
Detroit 90, San Antonio 80 – When we saw the guys on PTI talking about how the Pistons had no chance in San Antonio because they were tired, and had just lost to Boston and Dallas, we instantly thought, ‘wow, everyone’s probably going to pick the Spurs, but this is a perfect spot for the Pistons to work them.’ And that’s what happened. Rasheed “I’m not angry” Wallace went for 23-15, and the Spurs looked awfully lethargic for reasons we cannot explain.
Sacramento 116, Memphis 113 – Really have to give it to the Kings, who have been without Mike Bibby all season, have missed Kevin Martin for a large chunk, and are now missing Ron Artest, but remain competitive. Down double-digits in the fourth, they rallied to victory as four players topped 20 points. Inside the box score for the Grizz, who were led by Rudy Gay’s 31 – when Mike Conley was on the floor, they were -18 … the other rookie PG, Juan Carlos Navarro, registered a +11.
Utah 108, Phoenix 86 – No Nash, Matrix or Grant Hill = no chance, and it didn’t help that Mehmet Okur dropped 22-17 on the Suns.

TBL: That’s one of the problems with Plus/Minus in hoops. I’d hate to think you actually believe J.C.N was 29 points better than Conley last night, considering he was 2-13 from the floor. Granted this wasn’t Conley’s best game (3 dimes/4 turnovers), but come on. When JCN comes into the game, he’s playing against substitutes. Much easier to have an inflated +/- in that environment.
On a semi-related note, Reggie Theus for coach of the year. And watch him get fired after this season.

Detroit mailed in that Dallas game. They always play the Spurs well ever since game seven… that was torture. Did anyone catch Charles & Kenny saying Rasheed could be the best player EVER (if he got his head right), last night on TBS? I love me some Sheed, but I had to laugh at that. That is insane.

Big win for the Pistons last night. Sheed was a BEAST!!!
TBL – I seem to recall Wilbon hedging his bet a little bit about the Pistons having “no shot” in San Antonio. Tony K went withe the Spurs easily.

Per San Antonio policy, they play like this until the All-Star break. Games in January are meaningless.

This year through 24 games: 23 – 11
Last year, when they won the championship: 23 – 11

Regarding PTI, Chelsea, you’re right — Kornheiser gave Detroit zero shot, but Wilbon gave Detroit a 40% chance of pulling it out last night.
Imagine how much more lopsided the first-half deficit would’ve been if Jason Maxiel knew how to convert a three-footer.

San Antonio’s Big 3 has been going deep into the play-offs every other year for the last six and they have been playing a lot of itnernational ball. They are getting worn out.
BTW, the Spurs have NEVER made it out of the second round the year after a title.

@dornoch – Good points, I am just saying, the games bf the allstar break are meaningless to them.
Actually, if I’m a boston fan, I would be worried about the minutes the big 3 are playing. someone is going to get hurt and/or these 3 players aren’t used to playing up through June. Ask how the high win total worked out for Dal last year.

Awwww, TBL, a positive Pistons mention? My ice, cold, black heart is almost melting. Almost. Now if you guys would only get into hockey…
