Of course, lost in all this debate is that Florence is indeed a friggin’ dump of a city; I lived many years in SC, and this is not exactly a well-kept secret in the state. If the civic leaders (including Mr. Superintendent) spent half as much energy in effecting positive change as they did refuting the bad pub, things would change.

I don’t think I have ever heard of Florence before this story. I wasn’t thinking about how terrible Florence was when I was reading about an athlete’s fall to the bottom. I don’t think I will ever be in that city. Pretty much no one cares about the shitty city. Maybe now someone will, clean it up and put a Starbucks and a Disney store there. And everyone will be happy..except the people living in shit with no hope of life getting better.
