The Big Zamboni Ride: A Hockey Post
Fantasy Sports, NHL January 19th. 2008, 1:56pm
At CRM, I try to do a daily “Zamboni Ride” – a humorous look at the previous evening’s NHL action. I’ll be bringing that noise here in some form on the weekends. Hockey fans, enjoy. Non-hockey fans give it a chance – at the very least it’s better than frostbite.
My roommate Justin is from the Buffalo area so he grew up a Sabres fan. Last night while I was preparing the Roundup he came into my room and asked for a post about the Sabres. I laughed because, come on – it’s the Sabres – let’s be serious.
Justin suggested I give the Sabres some encouraging words because they’d lost their last 10 games. Then we both laughed. It was a good time all around. You really should have been there.
Later in the evening as I was working on Ballin’ I heard on SportsCenter’s Top 10 that some team had scored 10 goals. I of course didn’t think anything of it.
Well, it turns out that the team to score double digits just happened to be the Buffalo-Mother-Flippin’-Sabres. Lightening in a bottle my friends. Justin asks and he shall receive.
Read on puck-heads.
In not-awesome news – Hockey Jesus went down last night.
Ugh – Sidney “The Kidney” Crosby got hurt during the Penguins’ 0-3 loss to the Lightening Lightning and is now out indefinitely with a high-ankle sprain. As a fan of the sport of hockey, I’m disappointed because he’s obviously the biggest star in the game.
But as a fantasy owner – I’m going nuts! I just traded for him! This is unbelievable! When I made the trade the thought of an injury was in the back of my head, but I ignored it. Little did I know I had the same power as Walt from LOST. (I’m good at befriending old men ; -) Just kidding! I gave up Jason Spezza for The Kid. Puck me.
But wait! There’s More…
Eric Staal scored three times in the 3rd as the Hurricanes beat the Oilers 7-2.
Daymond Langkow also hat-tricked himself out in a 6-1 Calgary victory.
I only write about hat tricks so I’m not going to mention the following games:
Re: The Picture: After last night I’m guessing that Jason & Derek gave new meaning to “Zamboni Ride.” Yeah. You guys know what I mean.
Pre-Posting Update: Justin got home from work at 1:30 today and was crushed to find out that I already knew about the Sabres game. He’s new to the whole “internet” thing.

And of course, right after he’s named to the All-Star team, Manny Legace goes out and gets hurt. Bastard…

How about some more about that 9-year old wunderkid with the silky spin-move and puck pickup skills?
I heard he’s a better hockey player than Gordie Howe was at baking mysterdy meat for his mother.

As a Pens fan, I feel a little sick after watching Sid crash into the boards. Kind of a strange play, it didn’t look like he was going that fast or was out of control.
Oh well, maybe Crosby will get nursed back to health by this open minded lass (I know I’ve linked this before, but it’s still one of my favorite sports/poon related pics):

either this is where geno breaks out and shows that he is more like mario than anyone else in the league, or the pens season is doomed.

Couple of things:
1. Thanks, CRM, for doing a much needed hockey post! I realize most of TBL’s readers aren’t hockey fans, but it’s still a professional sport and deserves a post (even if it only happens occasionally). Shit, MMA events get more coverage than hockey, and I don’t know ANYONE who’s an MMA fan.
2. Bummer about Sid the Kid, but personally, I’m getting tired of the NHL using him as their only promotional tool. There are so many great players and teams worthy of some promotion. For example, last week Versus chose to show the Pittsburgh game for their national broadcast when the clear marquee game of the week the match-up between the two best teams in the league: Ottawa and Detroit. Yes, I’m a Wings fan, but seriously, if you’re trying to market hockey, why wouldn’t you choose to show the best the NHL has to offer? It doesn’t make sense to me.

CRM-Linking to his own blog, Posting about hockey. Seriously what dirt do you have on TBL that he lets you get away with these things? You got Kim Kardashian’s Cell # or something?
And you can post about hockey anytime, I’m always up for pucks

Since Crosby is injured, will the NHL still play games?

Is it too much to ask that a hockey post would spell the name of the Lightning correctly?

Being the worst team in the league has downgrades them to what lightening. They are a 5 game losing streak from being called the flashlights.

It might be, but I’ll talk to my research department.

@Gonzo -
By a wide, wide margin, hockey has the hottest fans.
