Did ESPN Get All Brokeback With a Dungy Headline?
ESPN, Kind of Gay, Movies, NFL January 22nd. 2008, 10:21am
Googling around for blogger perspective on Tony Dungy’s decision to remain the coach of the Indianapolis Colts, we stumbled upon this reaction to ESPN’s front-page headline (for at least six hours Monday), Dungy Can’t Quit Colts: “Is that a reference to Brokeback Mountain for the notoriously anti-gay coach? Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but it seems like a strange turn of phrase for the Disney company. It doesn’t appear anywhere in the story.”
We haven’t seen the movie, but after asking the wife and surfing the net, the editor who wrote the headline seems to be a) a Zepplein fan or b) taking a swipe at Dungy. If you’re wondering, no, Dungy did not use that phrase during the press conference.

Usually I think people are just trying to find ways to slam ESPN but I believe there is truth to this one. I remember reading that headline and finding it very odd.

Damn…I’m getting a visual of Coach Dungy crying as he smells Peyton’s jersey in his closet.

Dungy is like Chris Cooper in American Beauty. He is so anti-gay he may end up actually liking men, crying as he kisses Peyton in the rain.

I laughed when I first saw it this morning. Absolutely deliberate. And the first funny thing that dry, humorless corporate behemoth has done in years.

i had no idea that dungy was anti-gay. him and peyton manning must be at odds all the time. hey-oh!
actually, i bet his being anti-gay had everything to do with his kid killing himself. totally serious. i wish i knew this in 2005.

At one point during the baseball season, ESPN had this headline up (albeit for a very short time) when the Yanks swept the Sox in a series:
Yankees wave magic Wang and sweep Red Sox

Hahaha Franklin, I will never forget that headline.

Irish, I think I read that different than you. No one knows why the kid killed himself, but you never know maybe he WAS having thoughts like that. Knowing your dad is against that lifestyle could have really screwed that kid up more than he already was.
Unless of course Lozo was just being a dick. never know.

BTW – I wasn’t entirely sure he was antigay really either. Then again, I don’t read much of dungy.

I didn’t get a gay undertone from that headline. Now, the headline in the New York Post, “Dungy Can’t Stop Fucking Colts In Ass” was a little questionable, in my opinion.

They could just get rid of all these lame-ass headlines altogether, and I would be happy. I don’t need to see another “Houston, We Have a Problem” headline the next time a Houston team loses. Or “Remember the Titans” when Tennessee wins.
What the Hell is wrong with a headline that reads “Dungy Stays With Colts?” Seriously? Are people more likely to click on a lame-ass headline and I just don’t get it?

Bobb gets me. why doesn’t the irish mob get me?

Did Dungy say he hated gay people or wished them harm? That would certainly be an anti gay position. If he doesn’t want a man or woman to marry a horse is he anti horse?

I believe Dungy helped to finanicially support a group that was definitely anti-gay. Kinda creepy, if you ask me.

More Brokeback in the news…Heath Ledger was found dead today. Damn. Decent actor. Too young.
And so, a gay (not that HL was himself homersexual) day at TBL ends.
