Ballin’: Party in Seattle
NBA January 30th. 2008, 10:40am
Seattle 88, San Antonio 85: Welcome to life sans Tony Parker – without their point guard, the Spurs fell victim to a fourth-quarter fade against a team that had lost 14 games in a row. Kevin Durant’s jumper with 32 seconds to play was the money shot that gave Seattle its first win in 2008.
Washington 108, Toronto 104, OT: The Anthony Parker buzzer shot to send it into overtime will forever be marred by ‘It’s not possible!’ which was a terrible, terrible call. (UPDATE: But, as a reader points out, in context considering what happened last year.) Even without Caron Butler, the Wiz won in OT, propelled by 24-20 from Antwan Jamison and 20 from the Locksmith.
Detroit 110, Indiana 104: The loss, coupled with NJ’s win, bumps the Pacers into the 9th spot in the East. You know how in politics the media often calls a state ‘early’ for one candidate, even if the polls aren’t fully closed? We’re calling it now (for the second season in a row) – no playoffs for the Pacers. Dunleavy’s playing well, though.
New Jersey 87, Milwaukee 80: We should be praising Playground Alston’s near-trouble double, but we must go with the Nets ending their 9-game skid. Possible destinations for Kidd: Seattle or Memphis, though we’re not buying the latter and assuming maybe he meant Minnesota?
Los Angeles Lakers 120, New York 109: The Knicks have certainly played inspired ball in the last few weeks – and they would have won this one if not for an epic fourth quarter collapse (35-22 Lakers). Of the 2001 draft busts, Kwame (10-11) outdid Eddy (10-3). Kobe trumped everyone with 24 points, 11 assists and eight boards.

Foye is back!
January 30th, 2008 at 10:41 AM
Hahha, I love your Knicks bias, they have played inspired ball, despite the fact I called for them to make the playoffs and they still suck donkey balls.
What was Buckhantz talking about? I didn’t see the game (was watching GMU wax your guys favorite sleeper mid major VCU) but why wasn’t him making that shot possible? Buckhantz should have stuck with dagger!!!!!!!!!
January 30th, 2008 at 10:47 AM
i really dont see any team being able to trade with the Nets for Jason Kidd. Of course it would be nice if he wanted to travel south, but looks like he wants to go back to his roots in CA. but honestly i dont see him going anywhere this year.
January 30th, 2008 at 10:51 AM
1. It’s not possible because he didn’t want it to be.
2. I think to be a DAGGER!!!, it has to be a game winner, or potential game winner. Which opens it up for “IT’S NOT POSSIBLE!!” on the other end.
3. And thus solves the mystery of Steve Buckhantz. End of demo.

TBL–thank you for not mentioning the funeral the Suns held last night in Phoenix for the Hawks. Geez. We REALLY suck all of a sudden.
I don’t see the Nets being able to trade Kidd either…well, I see it being VERY DIFFICULT for them to trade him. Big contract, getting up there in age, some question as to exactly what he’d be able to contribute. But there’s always a sucker out there somewhere…
January 30th, 2008 at 10:52 AM
Alston had to shoot 19 teams to approach the triple double. 7-19, and 2-8 from deep. Not all that impressive. No need to praise him.
January 30th, 2008 at 10:59 AM
Alston – season high 12 assists, only 2 turnovers in 42 mins
no T-Mac
that’s a good win over a playoff team, and though Yao will get all the praise (36-19, he’s worth it)
January 30th, 2008 at 10:59 AM
Was that Buckhantz or the Toronto radio guy?
January 30th, 2008 at 11:00 AM
If Varejao hadn’t gone down, I could see Cleveland trading with Jersey, sending Gooden and some expiring contracts over there.
January 30th, 2008 at 11:04 AM
Definitely Buckhantz.
January 30th, 2008 at 11:08 AM
BraveSrRob–I agree that could happen, but do you want it to happen (assuming you’re a Cavs fan)? I’m not a Cavs fan, but if I were I’d be undecided…I really like Gooden as a player. Such a great rebounder, and is able to get a ton of easy baskets off those rebounds. Plays decent defense, very athletic big man. I haven’t watched Kidd that much this year, but assumed he was as good as ever. But since this most recent trade demand has come out, I’ve read/heard some saying that he’s not quite as good as advertised anymore.

No Hornets smack from me today. They didn’t play. Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if tonight’s the night their streak is broken. Back-to-back 24-point victories over contenders is hard to live up to. And the Warriors aren’t exactly a joke either.
But they have to keep winning now, so they can put as much distance as possible between themselves and the Spurs while they have a chance to do it.
January 30th, 2008 at 11:08 AM
TBL,
I’ll definitely take a win over Golden State (we’d lost the previous four after blowing early leads). And Alston played better than normal, yes, but against Golden State and the way they push the tempo, stats are always going to be artificially inflated (more possessions per game to get extra points/assists). Rafer’s 6-1 assist-to-TO ratio is nice, I will agree.
January 30th, 2008 at 11:12 AM
Celtics beat the Heat by 30 without KG or Ray Allen, and Peirce only had 7. Scored 110 without the Big Three. Leon Powe scored 25 points- despite scoring only 2.5ppg this season as of just two weeks ago. Bench scored 54 points- plus tony allen had 20 in place of ray allen.
miami looked like a rec league team in a senior center.
January 30th, 2008 at 11:13 AM
@atlanta: Drew Gooden is the softest guy on the Cavs. Never dunks it. Settles for his fadeaway hook shot. Plus about 3-4 times a game he does something incomprehensibly stupid. I don’t know what it is about him, but I think he has an IQ of like 7.
January 30th, 2008 at 11:20 AM
@Nick–I’ll take your word for it since you probably watch a lot more Cavs than I do. Given that, then, why is everyone mentioning him as one of the larger pieces in a possible trade? If he’s that bad, I wonder why the Nets would entertain the idea. Unless they’re really only going to be able to get 30-40 cents on the dollar, like I’ve been hearing.
January 30th, 2008 at 11:23 AM
Well, his numbers aren’t horrible, and he’s pretty damn cheap (like $6MM per year) for a big man. Just frustrating as hell to watch. When you see guys like Jerome James and Darko making similar money and doing next to nothing, Gooden becomes a viable option. Luckily we also have Varejao who is 3 times the player Gooden is for even cheaper.
January 30th, 2008 at 11:25 AM
Who else is Cleveland going to trade that has ANY talent while also being able to match up with Kidd’s salary?
Guess what, the Nets don’t want Ira Newble, Damon or Dwayne Jones.
January 30th, 2008 at 11:26 AM
Totally off topic, but this is what “Unsilent Majority” looks like? For some reason this just made me laugh.
January 30th, 2008 at 11:28 AM
Anyone noticed how clogged up the West is?
Utah, Portland and Denver are essentially tied for first place and two of the three could miss the play-offs VERY easily.
San Antonio is sitting in sixth right now.
Houston is 25-20 and in TENTH.
Anyone who list a favorite in the west is just guessing.
January 30th, 2008 at 11:28 AM
Maybe if the Pacers played inspired ball, they would be 14-30, instead of 19-27.
The TBL Knick lovefest is cute.
I sit thru every Pacer home game, I know my team sucks. Sometimes facing reality is a good thing.
January 30th, 2008 at 11:31 AM
Pretty sure Buckhantz call was meant as “Its not possible (that the raptors hit another last ditch 3 to send it into OT against the wiz)” Remember Michael Ruffin’s unintended assist to MoPeete last time?
January 30th, 2008 at 11:37 AM
@Gerrard, I thought that was what he was referring to, but the highlights they have shown give it no context.
I won’t ever forget stupid Michael Ruffin with like 2 seconds deciding to throw the ball in the air like the game was already decided, him and his stupid alien head.
January 30th, 2008 at 11:46 AM
They don’t want Ira Newble? Are you sure?
January 30th, 2008 at 11:47 AM
Nick covered it for me. Gooden is a complete moron defensively, but he’s cheap and comes off the books after next season.
Anything we send the Nets would be pure cost saving after Gooden. http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=429~1711~601~796&teams=5~17~17~17&te=&cash=
That trade would save the Nets 8 Mil next year with it all coming off the books. It also saves them 2-3 mil this year.
It’s definitely a pupu platter, but if they’re serious about trading Kidd, that could be one of the better offers they can get.
January 30th, 2008 at 11:48 AM
I say that because Kidd will probably show a shit fit if they trade him for the entire team wherever he goes. That’s what makes Cleveland a possibility, as remote as it is.
January 30th, 2008 at 11:49 AM
With the benefit of hindsight, of course, it looks like the Nets should’ve traded him last year…I agree it’s probably one of the better offers, and it is a serious pupu platter.
January 30th, 2008 at 11:52 AM
Inspired? They are 6-9 this month with four of the wins against Miami, New Jersy, Chicago and Philadelphia.
The Knicks have been EMBARASSED at home, FOUR times over that span, by the Kings, Raptors, Rockets and Celtics.
The two other wins were against Washingon, which was the Wizards fourth game in five nights, including back to back wins over Boston and against Detroit who was also playing their fourth game in five nights.
The Knicks have picked up a few wins against some other crappy teams, beaten two worn out teams, and sucked the rest of the time.
If you are going to continue to hump the Knicks, how do you down teams like Orlando? Hate to say it, but maybe irish has a point ……
January 30th, 2008 at 11:55 AM
Dornoch,
Leave the Knicks fans alone. They have to use scaled reasoning to maintain sanity. It’s like Indians fans pre-1994.
January 30th, 2008 at 12:01 PM
atl, they may want his contract, but they don’t want him. I would think the Nets would want SOME help on the court if they are going to trade Kidd.
The Cavs just aren’t built to win beyond the fact that they have Lebron James and Kidd isn’t going to get them there. Ferry is going to prove to me that he is not a very good GM if he mortgages any of the teams future for Kidd. It is going to be like the Celtics trading Joe Johnson for Rodney Rodgers. It helped a little in the short term, was nowhere near enough to get the Cs over the top and now I get to watch Joe Johnson be an all star for another team.
Obviously the Cavs don’t have any Joe Johnsons so they don’t have to worry about that but there are draft picks. Thorn could probably get a couple of first rounders out of Ferry as well as cap relief. Then where does that leave Cleveland next offseason? No cap space, no picks and still all you have is Lebron.
And don’t forget that big extension that Kidd wants. Good luck with that.
January 30th, 2008 at 12:07 PM
Dornoch–I was being sarcastic about Newble…sorry, should’ve made that clear. He’s horrible. I had to watch him for years here in Atlanta.
January 30th, 2008 at 12:26 PM
Caught the Pacers/Pistons game last night in person and let me just say Dunleavy is playing out of his head, BUT “Sheed for Brains” Wallace was UNSTOPPABLE! He could do what ever he wanted in the paint, and there is no reason for him not to play that way every game.
January 30th, 2008 at 1:41 PM
He said “Not possible” because it was a turnaround three with no time left after the Wizards had appeared to seal up an easy win with 1:30 or so to play.
It’s hard to get a good perspective on something when you only watch a quick highlight.
If you don’t like the way Buckhantz calls an NBA game then you probably don’t like the NBA.
January 30th, 2008 at 2:28 PM
@Dornach: What future? Seriously outside of Varejao (who Ferry is forbade from trading because of contract rules), who could he possibly trade that would kill the Cavs future? Boobie? Love him, but easily replaced.
January 30th, 2008 at 3:47 PM
bout time you agreed with me on something dornoch
