Gilbert Arenas Recants Tales of Private Skin-Loss
NBA, Near Castration February 8th. 2008, 9:45am
From the “god, we didn’t need to know that” file comes the tale of Gilbert Arenas shaving his Na-Na region for the very first time. Per an interview in Men’s Journal, Arenas acknowledges that the most pain he’s ever been in occurred during his rookie season. Those damn veterans and their convincing ways.
[Warning: the following info will make you shriek in disgust and perceived pain. Just letting you know. As a follow-up post to dirty guaze, needles and Miller Lite, this one might put you over the top, er... toilet.]
“When I was new in the NBA the team veterans convinced me to shave, you know, down there, because they said the hair stinks. I used my girlfriend’s razor, which was rusty and gave me keloids. The doctor prescribed medicine to dab on, but I just poured it all over. Three days later I woke up screaming. The skin was burnt off my scrotum, down to my crack, everything — just raw flesh. I still had to run and play, so I used a numbing spray for a month until it healed. Now I use clippers.”ÂÂ
Ouch. That hurts. Really bad. Thankfully, that was the only pain-related question Gilbert answered in the interview. ÂÂ

Ok, now I’m not sure if I want the Wizards to give max money to a guy who burns his balls.

Also, your headline is misleading, recants means to take away.
The correct headline would be Gilbert recanted his ball skin.

There isn’t a bigger douche I would wish that on.

i like gilbert. But i think he is a ball hog like no other. I used to think Paul Pierce was bad until i watched gilbert. i think the wizards are better off without gilbert and should ship his ass to a team like the Magic. haha

Gilbert is one of those players that is really, really good, but not good enough to win big as he is right now. He’s not as good as Kobe or Lebron offensively (or Iverson, for a PG comparison), so it’s hard to justify the amount of time he spends dribbling and amount of shots he takes.
He also has too big of an ego to stop hogging the ball as much. He’s not capable of playing second fiddle on a team.

Pierce was a ballhog at times during his career but until this year look what he was playing with.
On a message board I visit we are trying to figure out who the best 12 Celtics are since Larry Bird retired. The fact that Antoine Walker is near the top of the list tells you all you need to know.

Why would be listen to the vets in the first place? And how did they know his ball hair smelled terribly? Are there some baloney smugglers in that locker room?
February 8th, 2008 at 10:05 AM
I think the proper word would be “regaled.”

@Dorn: Fatoine is not one of the 12.

Maybe this is why teams like the Wizards never win. The guys on the team are more interested in pranks than unity. I never understood the whole excessive rookie hazing.
You never hear of these stories coming from the Spurs, Pats, Red Wings or Red Sox-Yankees.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:07 AM
@dornoch- you should add Reggie Lewis to that list
February 8th, 2008 at 10:08 AM
Nick, I hate Antoine more than anyone could. But you can’t make a list of 12 best Celtics in the post Bird era and not include him. The team has made one good play-off run since Larry Legend took off his shoes for good and it was on the back of Pierce and Walker.

irish, Reggie is a clear number two behind Pierce. After that who you got?
Rick Fox, David Wesley, Kenny Anderson, Sherm Douglas, Dino Radja? The pickings are pretty slim.

Dornoch he was on the Warriors his rookie year, this has nothing to do with the Wizards, and I don’t buy what you’re selling that winning teams never pull pranks
February 8th, 2008 at 10:10 AM
Can you guys stop saying “ballhog” after this article. Okay, thanks.

+1 Hef
February 8th, 2008 at 10:12 AM
fox, vin baker, ron mercer, walker, billups , jefferson, kenny anderson

Well the Warriors are like the Wiz, they never win either.
Its not that winners don’t pull pranks. I just think that it is more important to certain teams and the Wiz seem like one of those teams. It isn’t just the pranks. It is Arenas’ mouth and DeShaun Stevenson’s actions that go along with it. They are sideshows like Chad Johnson, another guy who never wins.
Something can be said for being proffessional and just opening your mouth about this story is not being a true pro. Some things are best left unsaid and this is one of them. But Gilbert can’t stand being out of the spotlight.

Dornoch–I recall some story about both the Red Sox and Yankees doing the whole “dress the rookies up in crazy costumes for the road trip” thing. So no dice there. And I’m sure there are all kinds of hazing activities that go on in locker rooms that we never hear about. But I’m interested to see your scientific study on the correlation between hazing and losing.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:14 AM
@Dorn: do you count Billups/Joe Johnson?
February 8th, 2008 at 10:17 AM
Hope you are joking about Vin Baker, irish. He hardly played for Boston, spending most of his time there in the drunk tank. He was a total bust. Mark Blount, Tony Battie and Vitaly Potapenko are more deserving.
Billups was only there for half a season, he doesn’t qualify.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:18 AM
yes dorn it was a joke but Reggie Lewis wasnt
February 8th, 2008 at 10:21 AM
Just an opinion atlanta. And I think telling someone to shave his balls is different than dressing up the rookies.
The whole locker room prank crap done to individuals creates disent between team members. At some point it goes to far on teams that lack leadership.
The Red Sox and Yankees dressing up the rookies was done for fun, to create unity, not divide the team.
IMO there is a difference but if you don’t think so, no skin off my balls.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:26 AM
Every team dresses up their rookies right? It’s become a league wide tradition. Every September you see a ton of rookies here in Arizona (then again, we’ve had a ton of rookies for the last five years so maybe it’s just because they’re so noticeable?)
February 8th, 2008 at 10:36 AM
That was gross and uncalled for. Besides, who in their right mind uses a rusty razor?? Idiot.
February 8th, 2008 at 11:06 AM
@Dornoch: MLB teams make Rookies dress up in costumes. I believe Dice-K was a teletubbie? There are pictures floating around the internet of the hazing.
February 8th, 2008 at 11:28 AM
@Dornoch–Fair enough…I’m just a little hesitant to judge what goes on in locker rooms, since we all as general fans know so little when it comes to that.
February 8th, 2008 at 11:47 AM
No where does he say it was a prank Dornoch, he was getting advice on how to manscape so the groupies dont tell stories that his junk stinks. And Wizards have made the playoffs with Gil, not so much before he came along in fact they flat out sucked so your opinion is bunk. As long as he is around the Wiz are much better off and he lead them to their playoff series win against the Bulls two years ago, you know the series where he hit ricockulous threes at the ends of regulation to go to OT and OT winners.
