January ComScore: ESPN Back on Top
Media Gossip/Musings February 12th. 2008, 1:08pm
Here’s some proof that fantasy sports help propel the mainstream media websites – ESPN and Yahoo both saw their readership totals dip in January, one of the few non-fantasy sports months of the year. The most significant drop, though, occurred at CBS Sports, although it’s so large, one would think there has been an error. Also, Fox seems to be closing the gap on the Big 2. To change things up a bit, we’re going to look at a number that we don’t usually scrutinize – just how long people are sticking around once they visit each of the major players. As usual, many thanks to our tipster who is privy to these numbers and continually shares them with us.
1. ESPN, 19.16 million uniques (down from 20.6 in December). Of note – one of its top roll-ups with Sherdog, a Mixed Martial Arts website that drew 518,000 uniques.
Average minutes per visit: 7.6
2. Yahoo, 19.07 million uniques (down from 21.6 in December). Of note – Rivals continues to soar – 6.6 million uniques.
Average minutes per visit: 8.4
3. Fox Sports, 17.22 million uniques (up from 17.1 in December). Of note – Scout is slowly improving – 2.3 million uniques.
Average minutes per visit: 4.0
4. NFL Internet Group, 15.36 million uniques (down from 18.5 in December). Of note – we had our best month ever (200,000 uniques), which topped 14 NFL teams. Everyone gets lucky once, right?
Average minutes per visit: 5.1
5. AOL Sports, 10.44 million uniques (up from 9.1 in December). Of note: Believed to be their best month ever.
Average minutes per visit: 3.1
6. NBA Internet Network, 5.7 million uniques (same as December).
Average minutes per visit: 3.7
7. College Sports TV, 5.3 million uniques (down from 5.4 in December).
Average minutes per visit: 3.6
8. MLB.com, 5.2 million uniques (down from the Mitchell Report-inflated 6.2 in December).
Average minutes per visit: 4.3
9. Sports Illustrated, 5.1 million uniques (down from 5.4 in December). Of note – expect SI to possibly rise into the top five for February, thanks to the SI Swimsuit Issue (we’ll do a post on it later, and yes, Anne V remains the hottest) and the millions of readers it will generate.
Average minutes per visit: 7.6
10. World Wrestling Entertainment, 4.4 million uniques.
Average minutes per visit: 6.0
Other notes: Where is CBS Sports, you ask? Down to 11th, with 3.7 million uniques. That’s a massive drop from 6.1 million uniques in December. Is this a name change thing? Perhaps millions of visits were not counted? Were readers scared off by the website’s facelift? It seems like something is amiss, because that’s a significant drop. As pumped as we are about our improvement, you guys are only spending 0.7 minutes on the site (the best: Two cricket websites, over 20 minutes per visit. Go figure). Bummer. We’re going to be tinkering with ideas on how to keep you around longer.

a big reason for the CBS downtick could be related to fantasy fb being done. both of my $$ leagues use cbs and as does anyone else i know who’s in a $ league.

My average length of visit on TBL is 7 minutes, but thats usually because their new fancy Hi-Def photos take a while to lizzoad.

If I have your site logged on the entire workday (generally 8-10 hours), and constantly hit refresh does that count as me spending an average of 540 minutes a day on your site?
February 12th, 2008 at 1:13 PM
0.7 minutes = 42 seconds. Oh shit, gotta go.
February 12th, 2008 at 1:14 PM
darn good q, CBH
February 12th, 2008 at 1:16 PM
Same situation for me as cbh49er.
February 12th, 2008 at 1:17 PM
I think the average time spent of 0.7 minutes is because you put up quick posts throughout the day. So I can come here, read a quick post, scan the comments if I’m interested, and I’m on my way. Come back after a couple hours and read the next post.
If I understand you correctly, I only count as 1 unique visitor with an average length of 0.7 minutes, even though I visit 5-10 times a day, right?

I agree that the CBS drop is completely Fantasy Football related….
Hey TBL where did The Sporting News end up since they have made the effort to get some decent bloggers and columnists?
February 12th, 2008 at 1:21 PM
max – good Q. i only got the top 20, i will ask

ESPN is going to take some major hits for their fantasy baseball season. They apparently promised to be up for the season yesterday. Well they have now changed it to “soon”. This goes along with last season where they fucked up and had to reset the scores 2-3 weeks into the season. Basically, you started over 3 weeks into the season.
February 12th, 2008 at 1:26 PM
I’d say Sporting News needs to update more frequently with more articles on baseball and Football to get me to stay longer than a minute or two.
February 12th, 2008 at 1:26 PM
I am in the same boat as CBH and ET. I have this site up for 8 hours at work. and I have it up for the 1-2 hours i spend at home. (3-4 hours if it’s not a school night.and longer if I am playing poker online)

CBS will rebound significantly in the coming months with the Tourny…Perhaps you could give away some more free ipods, that may attract visitors.
February 12th, 2008 at 1:30 PM
@Gonzo – what site do you play at?
February 12th, 2008 at 1:31 PM
I play Full Tilt, but for fake money. i havent figured out how to play for real money.
February 12th, 2008 at 1:40 PM
TBL..just a thought on your Cum avg….Because you link so many sites in your round up…and your posts…when I go to the link it takes me away from your site so in practice (at least for me) I spend more time on sites in which I am reading things so I can participate on your site than on your site…plus I am a big wig with limited time so and a tricky IT department that checks out total time on the internet a day so I have to click off every time I am done looking at your site.
February 12th, 2008 at 1:41 PM
Roman. the IT doesnt flag your inconspicuous handle ? lol
February 12th, 2008 at 1:44 PM
Never played at fultilt. I played bodog for a while, now I’m try PokerStars.
February 12th, 2008 at 1:44 PM
Gonzo..thankfully…the Main IT guy is in my Fantasy Football league in which I use the same name…and they know if they bust me I will apply the act in which my name describes.
February 12th, 2008 at 1:46 PM
a few things:
yes, if you open a site at 9, never click off it, hit refresh at 5, it counts as an 8-hour visit.
i said it when it launched — cbs’ new look is hideous and i’ve been going to espn ever since.
don’t play online poker for money. it’s fixed. i swear.
and i can’t believe someone openly gave you your cum average. so gross.
February 12th, 2008 at 1:49 PM
I look at ESPN less and less and Yahoo more and more each week.
February 12th, 2008 at 1:50 PM
Since I discovered TBL I definitely look at ESPN.com less and less.
February 12th, 2008 at 1:50 PM
You have to understand how comScore works to realize why us losers that troll this site all day have 0 influence on the numbers. comScore is, for lack of a better term, voluntary spyware. It is installed on several million users PC’s and tracks their every movement on the web. They then run a variety of statistical packages against all of the numbers to get these projections. So unless you have comScore (aka PermissionResearch and OpinionSquare) installed, you don’t count.
February 12th, 2008 at 2:02 PM
Computer term naitivety (sp?) here but what does it mean if someone calls you a troll?
February 12th, 2008 at 2:02 PM
Lozo, I agree with your point that online poker is fixed. good thing they wont let me play for money.
Roman, I think a mushroom stamp would be more painful.
February 12th, 2008 at 2:03 PM
ET, I havent tried any other sites (aside from Yahoo, and their poker is atrocious).
February 12th, 2008 at 2:04 PM
cbh – it means you’re a drive-by commenter who just go places to stir shit up
February 12th, 2008 at 2:06 PM
and don’t anyone dare call IrishMafia a troll. he knows his sports.
February 12th, 2008 at 2:11 PM
Got it TBL, like 412 yesterday you learn somethign new everyday.
February 12th, 2008 at 2:17 PM
I’ve never been a fan on comScore numbers. For larger sites that are visited by a relatively large % of internet users I think it does it’s job and the numbers are pretty accurate. For smaller sites the numbers don’t seem to make sense, as in the case of 42 seconds that TBL has. Smaller sites are better suited to using the numbers they get from whatever tracking provider they use.
February 12th, 2008 at 3:03 PM
@cbh-Troll: What 412 accuses you of being if you are right and he is wrong.
Oops….was that Trollish behavior?
February 12th, 2008 at 3:30 PM
Somebody had asked about Sporting News: 741,000 uniques. They had a good time spent – 8.4.
Doesn’t break down by the blog, though.
February 12th, 2008 at 6:23 PM
thanks TBL… it will be interesting to see if they grow since they have embraced the blogging side of things (PFT, AA, etc) vs CBS who has no clue what a blogger is…
