The Highly Entertaining Dunk Conest
NBA, Video February 18th. 2008, 4:52pmWe are occasionally prone to taking dissenting views (Jon Scheyer, John Hollinger, and Chad Johnson) and we feel that while blowing out the candle and the Superman cape made for great theater, Dwight Howard’s opening slam – the one where, starting from out of bounds behind the basket, he threw the ball off the backboard, caught it, and all in one swooping motion, like a Transformer coming to life, ducked his head under the basket and dunked the basketball – was the most impressive jam from Saturday night. A distant second – Gerald Green’s shoeless immitation of Vince Carter. (Aside: Outside of tattoos on the head, Green may have one of the silliest choices we’ve seen – the Boston skyline on his forearm. You can see some of it here. Green is from Texas. He was drafted by the Celtics, and presumably, thought of himself as a franchise player, the type that would never leave voluntarily, or get traded. After two unproductive years, he was dealt to Minnesota. Does he have the Twin Cities skyline on his right forearm? Hope not – his agent recently said that Green wants to be traded. Looks like the tattoo says HOUSTON and not BOSTON. Makes sense!)
How much of a letdown was Rudy Gay?
Tomorrow in NBA talk: the second half, and the ghost of Keith Van Horn!

I thought his tattoo said Houston, considering he is from Texas and all.
Irish got his wish.

Did it say Houston? I could have sworn it was Boston. Let me keep poking around …

I agree about the dunk…the Superman made for great theater but the fact he bounced the ball off the backboard..did not smash his head and then make the dunk is just ridiculous…the dunk with the mini basketball hoop is really awesome too if you think about it.

I think the best dunk was the quick throw to the backboard and then he threw it down, I guess it was his second one.
Also, the Superman thing was cool but I will become highly annoyed if people keep referring to that as a dunk.

Jamario Moon got jobbed.

Interesting. Maybe it does say Houston? The problem is that STON are at the end of both, and i dont have it on TIVO.
This spot says Houston: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=142756&page=4

The Superman “layup” should not have counted. It’s the “dunk” contest. Maybe next year, Tony Parker can show us all how truly spectacular the “layup” can be.

is that a Big Beauitful Women Forum ?

Repping Houston isn’t any upgrade.
February 18th, 2008 at 5:12 PM
I hear Houston has great sizzurp
February 18th, 2008 at 5:17 PM
If the Superman “dunk” was a dunk, then I think Jason Kopono should have won the Dunk contest. He was dunking from all the way behind the 3 point line and just kept hammering them home. He’s a spectacular dunker.
Gerald Green was robbed. Nobody gets higher than him.

Jamario Moon is an awesome name. Like a Star Wars character. ‘Use the Force, Jamario’.
February 18th, 2008 at 5:20 PM
Why is Kenny Smith quitting just because of a dunk? Maybe an over-statement there Kenny. Nice theme song.. Indiana Jones= Superman? I don’t normally mind Kenny, but he was way over the top Saturday night.
February 18th, 2008 at 5:23 PM
Gerald Green was robbed.
Andre Iguodala would like a a word with you.
February 18th, 2008 at 5:27 PM
Thanks for posting that whole thing, TBL. I missed the “event” Saturday night, but really enjoyed watching it just now. Howard is a freak. All of his were awesome.
February 18th, 2008 at 5:28 PM
hey spartanfan, off topic, but Suton and Morgan’s disappearance act is killing us!
February 18th, 2008 at 5:38 PM
Onterrio, where you been, man?
February 18th, 2008 at 5:41 PM
Green and Moon were just as good as Howard. There aren’t 5 guys in the league that can go between their legs w/ no shoes on. The only reason he even attempted that was because the players know that dunk is near impossible – he made it look easy and it wasn’t going to win him this contest because of that (and his name). Dwight Howard clearly missed the superman dunk.

This is the first time I’ve listened to the broadcast; only caught the highlights. Kenny Smith…wow, dude. Calm down. That is excessive. Overbearing.
Great Stephen A. Smith impression though.

green’s cupcake dunk was damn good too. it was just as good as the superman layup.
February 18th, 2008 at 6:41 PM
Gerald Green’s friends/relatives/fan-boys are constantly calling Houston sports radio asking why the Rockets don’t trade for him. Not quite like the Vince Young people, but still noticable.

I liked it better when AI did it : http://youtube.com/watch?v=eKkVzaM-L_k
(second dunk…..htw did Iggi not win it. stupid fucking judges)

@sparty
Man, I tell you what. Every big man on this team is soft. I mean shit, Paul Davis was soft, and he looks like the Incredible Hulk compared to Suton and Naymick. This is about the most dissapointing team Izzo’s had, when you factor in pre-season expectations. And Morgan? Sheesh, he was a monster at the beginning of the year, and now he acts like he’s scared to even shoot. Damn it.
February 18th, 2008 at 8:32 PM
@spartanfan, couldn’t have said it better myself. Morgan is starting to look like Chris Hill his senior year, no confidence in his shot. Looks like we are gonna have to wait to get Roe there next season to have any low post production. However, Kalin Lucas will be a stud.

This whole “that wasn’t a dunk” debate is silly. The fact that he threw it in and still made it, makes it that more impressive. It’s like Barkley’s “he’s on the line” b.s. that took points away from Rip (not Barkley, the toe on the line). It’s the damn all-star break, not the SAT.
The candle was the most impressive, simply because the cupcake didn’t fall off. The best was Howard’s first dunk, the most entertaining was the Superman one.
February 19th, 2008 at 8:18 AM
All this debating stuff is silly. This was the most entertaining dunk contest since the Vince Carter one in 2000 (I think McGrady was in that one too). Just enjoy it and stop saying people “got robbed” and so forth. It’s a dunk contest. Howard put on the best show, no doubt, and that’s what it’s about.
That being said, I loved the Birthday Cake dunk and I thought it was a definite perfect score. One of my all time favorites. Very creative. I also loved Kenny and Charles doing the commentary. They made it that much more fun. What, do you want Billy Packer and Jim Nantz doing the commentary so we can fall asleep?
February 19th, 2008 at 8:49 AM
yeah do the post after i leave work tbl. haters on here saying the superman wasnt a dunk. Who else can get that high and thrown it down like that? His two other dunks were better than anyone else that tried to dunk. bounce off the back of the backboard, cmon that was the best dunk in a long time
brush the haters off
February 19th, 2008 at 11:38 AM
I’m with irish, that was the most ridiculous dunk I’ve ever seen. Howard pretty much did a dunk you see during those trampoline dunking shows during halftime but without the trampoline.
Loved the Birthday Cake but if you were watching live the Superman had to been a more incredible dunk.
