Rich Rodriguez Got Out Just in Time: Paper Claims Budding WVU Star Noel Devine Beat Down Student
Campus Crime, College Football February 19th. 2008, 11:53am
This should be fun: West Virginia running back Noel Devine and a less-heralded teammate allegedly beat and stomped two students outside of a “club” in Morgantown over the weekend according to the Dominion Post (via College Game Balls). According to the report, more than two football players were involved in the one-sided fight, but one of the kids who got jacked was able to ID Devine, the star of this year’s Fiesta Bowl. (With Steve Slaton NFL-bound, Devine was set to be the man in the backfield for new coach Bill Stewart.)
Somewhere in Ann Arbor (or in the vicinity of Terrelle Pryor’s house), Rich Rodriguez laughs.

Isn’t this kid like 5′5”, 160 lbs?
February 19th, 2008 at 11:55 AM
I got a buck that says that UMD player doesnt catch Devine.

Our hoops players (Garrison, McCray, NCM) all got into altercations at one point or another. They may have missed a game, but nothing major.
Non-Story.

A WVU student-athlete is less than a model citizen? Call Mike Wallace!

it’s possible. but Stewart recently booted three players for misdemeanors. I’m sure Devine will have many, many chances because he’s a star, but it’s something to monitor …

He’s the Dexter Manley of Morgantown. What else did you expect from this guy?

This is my biggest fear with Rich Rod. He who once recruited Pac Man. I hope now that he has the Michigan name to sell, that he can get guys of good character. After reading that TP story a few days ago I could care less where he goes. If you can’t handle the local high school fans taunting you, then you certainly will crack under the fan taunting from the red menace. He will go to PSU, that is my final answer. And how stupid was it to delay? He has become a complete non factor. Nobody talks about him anymore.

Except for you and Spencer.
You threw that one down that middle for me Magglio.
February 19th, 2008 at 12:08 PM
Mags – Don’t forget about WVU’s other stellar citizens in the NFL (Chris Henry and Quincy Wilson)
February 19th, 2008 at 12:08 PM
I think spencer will agree that we havn’t heard or talked about him much since “national sign if you feel like it day.”

What a cheapshot for punching the kid in the back of the head.
February 19th, 2008 at 12:10 PM
what makes this story hilarious for me when it really isn’t is the fact i first read “down” in the headline as an adjective.

TP’s next hoops game is tomorrow in the WPIAL AA semifinal. It was supposed to be a matchup between Pryor and Jonathan Baldwin, another 5-star football recruit from the area but Aliquippa was upset last round. Instead, Jeannette faces a private catholic school (Bishop Canevin). More taunting will likely occur
February 19th, 2008 at 12:13 PM
@Mags: Obviously I missed some thing here, what happened with TP and taunting? You’re right he has pretty much become a non-factor, since LOI I haven’t followed his situation.
February 19th, 2008 at 12:14 PM
@theasusundevil – The punch was definitely a cheap shot and then they all just ran away. It just made me think dirty for whatever reason.
February 19th, 2008 at 12:14 PM
@ASU
read the bottom link. He was taunted at his last b-ball game and almost went Ron Artest, alledgedly.
February 19th, 2008 at 12:15 PM
TP is now being heavily recruited by Whitmore.
February 19th, 2008 at 12:17 PM
@Maggs: Clearly if it is not spelled out for an ASU graduate we are as lost as Helen Keller in a maze. Thanks for the heads up.
February 19th, 2008 at 12:18 PM
Gold and blue, official gang colors of WVU.
They swapped out Rodriguez for Huggins, so it’s pretty much a push on the sleazeball/recruitment of future felons scale.
February 19th, 2008 at 12:20 PM
@ASU
But you have all the of the women.
February 19th, 2008 at 12:22 PM
Roeth – Are you going? If so, feel free to take pics and write up a paragraph of the goodness.
Better yet, take a video camera
February 19th, 2008 at 12:24 PM
Sounds like the guy was probably asking for it, but a six on one gang beat down is hardly fair.
February 19th, 2008 at 12:25 PM
You have to think this Private school has heard about these events and are just going to ride Pryor.
February 19th, 2008 at 12:27 PM
Mags…about pryor, until he signs theres really ntohing to talk about.
February 19th, 2008 at 12:33 PM
Terrelle Pryor does not care for your red sweater vest.
February 19th, 2008 at 12:44 PM
If he loses it at highschool games, TP is going to spontaneously combust with the taunting that he’ll receive in Wisconsin or tOSU (presuming he goes somewhere else)
February 19th, 2008 at 12:51 PM
dont forget PSU fans…nothing spells hospitality like urine filled balloons.
good thing youre kinda far away on a football field.
he needs to go to the pac-10, where the students are too stoned to care and defenses dont hit.
February 19th, 2008 at 1:03 PM
devine was major troubled goods when he was in high school. devine getting into some incident in college is/was way too predictable.
February 19th, 2008 at 1:04 PM
ding ding ding, Jimmy
February 19th, 2008 at 1:04 PM
@Spen: Too stoned? I’ll give ya that one. Defenses don’t hit? Well, everyone but USC, so I’ll give ya that one too. However, the taunting at some places can be vicious (ASU, UofA, Oregon, USC, and UCLA).
February 19th, 2008 at 1:14 PM
TBL – Doubtful that I will attend tomorrow’s game, but it’s about 50/50 that I’ll be at the championship game on Sat. (assuming Jeannette wins). If I go, I’ll take the camera.
February 19th, 2008 at 1:23 PM
Regarding the Pryor “incident”, this seems much ado about nothing. If anything, it sounds as though some of the fans that were doing the taunting got a bit out of control (while others asked for autographs?) and Pryor showed remarkable grace under pressure (24 pts, 24 rb, 8 blocks, 7 assists).
February 19th, 2008 at 6:00 PM
Ask Michigan if Pac-10 defenses hit.
