The Roundup: Michael Beasley’s Four Cell Phones
Baseball, Blogging, College Basketball, Media Gossip/Musings, NBA, Politics, Tennis, Video March 11th. 2008, 7:10am
When American Beauty came out, Mena Suvari was, as the youngsters like to say, the hot fire … a couple quick Spitzer links: here are the whores employed by the Emperor’s Club, the Smoking Gun document is a must-read, and perhaps this is what his next commercial will look like … anyone surprised this doesn’t happen more often? … always up for a FNL picture montage … anyone downsizing from their SUV with gas prices soaring? … good news about our weekend bloggers: You’ll now be periodically seeing them during the week, and we’re looking to add two new voices, as well …
Federer tops Sampras. (USA Today)
Why is Michael Beasley carrying around four cell phones? (Washington Times)
For the eight of you still interested in Spygate, a nice profile of Matt Walsh. (Boston Globe)
Nice look at the next batch of sports icons, though we’d replace D Wade with Greg Oden, and add Tiger Woods, who is overwhelming No. 1 right now. (Miami Herald)
Mark Cuban to bloggers: access denied. (Deadspin)
Life, post-Bonds, will be radical for Pedro Gomez. (SI.com)
Musings about Isiah Thomas and popcorn. (Life in the Cell)
Wondering if the Sonics are tanking for Derrick Rose … but what about Michael Beasley? (Northwest Sports)
Seattle is rightfully angry about the loss of the Sonics. (Can’t Stop the Bleeding)
Pittsburgh power rankings, but we have to ask: Where are all the Pirates? (Mondesi’s House)
Did Brent and Lavin not even know the rules when Josh Shipp’s illegal shot went over the basket? (NYDN)
Some MLB predictions. (Clutch is Everything)
South Alabama has a strong resume, and we think they’re in … but that Sun Belt semifinal loss hurts. Bad. (Register)

You’d replace DWade with Oden? Come on now.
March 11th, 2008 at 7:24 AM
mark texiera for NL MVP, give me a break.
March 11th, 2008 at 7:30 AM
SJ – I’d say the potential for world domination for Greg Oden is much, much higher right now than D Wade.
March 11th, 2008 at 7:34 AM
Spitzer is a filthy – who knew? That Smoking Gun document was six pages of solid gold.
March 11th, 2008 at 7:36 AM
D Wade already has dominated the world, so that point is moot. He has a ring, and about two gajillion commercials and is the number 1 selling jersey or near the top every year. Plus Oden isn’t a flashy player like Wade. I don’t see it, even if he is gregarious.
March 11th, 2008 at 7:37 AM
I am spending roughly 200-230 a month on gas and I am seriously thinking about trading in my SUV.
Am I the only one who thinks Spitzer’s wife is a milf?
March 11th, 2008 at 7:41 AM
TBL – I have been lusting over a Civic hybrid for a few years now (sadly can’t afford a new car yet) and this weekend my Mom finally asked me what the hybrids are all about and how they work. My dad drives 30+ miles to work everyday in a Trailblazer and has for a few years despite my insistance to them that it is not such a green thing to do. I guess if my pleads for the environment doesn’t work the punch in the wallet will. Hopefully this becomes a trend for others. Electric cars here we come!
March 11th, 2008 at 7:44 AM
Paging irishmafia.
March 11th, 2008 at 7:45 AM
Definitely keep us posted, Buckeye Scott. If you do get one on your own, email me, we can talk about a post. I know I’d want to read about the experience. $230 a month on gas is absurd.
SJ – Valid point on D Wade, but if you charted his progress, his up arrow slowed to a crawl in 2007 due to injuries, and then Shaq got traded Wade completely leveled off. This latest injury has sent his arrow downward. I thought most of the reason he was named was because of the paper that wrote the story.
March 11th, 2008 at 7:52 AM
TBL: True. No doubt the last year and a half’s injuries have totally put a damper on him, plus with the continued rise of Lebreezy. It’s a shame, because before the injuries he was just great. Also, just to clarify, the Shaq trade had nothing to do with Wade’s performance. Shaq was around last year and the injuries still slowed Wade. Shaq sucked before he got hurt as well as afterwards.
All that being said, he is still one of the faces of the league. Hopefully can return to form.
March 11th, 2008 at 7:52 AM
Will do TBL – Sadly, unless my fully paid off truck goes belly up I won’t be able to convince the wife to buy a new car. I am currently taking bids to have my truck put to its final resting place and make it look like an accident. I am south of Canton, Ohio so who are our Ohio guys here? Coop? Spencer? Somebody has to take me up on this so I can get the hybrid.
I have a friend that said she drove from Chicago to Florida in hers and filled up once. Once! Insanity.
March 11th, 2008 at 7:56 AM
what kind of truck do you have buckeye…just leave it parked in canton with the engine runnign and pray for it to get “stolen”
March 11th, 2008 at 8:00 AM
K-State must pay players even more than tOSU for Beasley to have 4 cellphones.
FWIW, Lebron has 12 cellphones…Lebron > Beasley
March 11th, 2008 at 8:00 AM
a black 2001 S10. I may forget the keys in it at the Best Buy at the strip around 8:30 tonight, hope nothing happens to it….
/hoping wife doesn’t read this, or, the insurance company….
March 11th, 2008 at 8:00 AM
if you want me to steal your car to collect insurance money, you got it buddy. anything for a buckeye.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:02 AM
anyone on here drive a large SUV i.e. Escallade, Suburban, Yukon? there is a dealer in DC giving away a $2000 gas card with the purchase/lease of a new Escallade. How long can that last? 6 months maybe?
March 11th, 2008 at 8:02 AM
I feel so welcome here. you guys are real pals. this is why ohio is good, who cares that I had to shovel snow 4 times this weekend and can’t feel most of my back? It’s the generousity of the Buckeye community that keeps ya here.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:07 AM
f’sho.
federerererer tops sampras? NO WAY. i wouldve never thought an all-time great in his prime would beat a close-to-40 year old. never in a million years.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:09 AM
Buckeye: Dont expect a toasted muffin next time you come in to negotiate your rates.

March 11th, 2008 at 8:11 AM
I have a 2003 Black Chevy Tahoe Z71 I’m trying to sell if anyone’s interested???? It’s loaded and in great condition!
Let me know….
March 11th, 2008 at 8:12 AM
That’s fine Sterlin, I am not a big fan of lizards handling by breakfast foods anyways.
However if I recall he promises jam in that commercial… and I do like jam….
March 11th, 2008 at 8:14 AM
I drive a Hummer with a Prius shell on top of it.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:14 AM
@Benji re: Teixeira – I agree that I don’t think he’ll win the MVP, but it’s not that ridiculous to say it could happen. Did you see what he did last year after coming over to the Braves? And he’ll have Chipper and Francouer on either side of him in the lineup…he could have a ridiculous season. Of course I’m biased…and I’m also glad the Phillies and Mets are allowing the Braves to fly under the radar.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:17 AM
Okay–I just looked it up, and here were Teixeira’s stats for the Braves in 54 games last year (208 ABs):
17 HR, 56 RBI, .317 BA, .404 OBP
Wow…
March 11th, 2008 at 8:17 AM
Traded in the Explorer for an Altima recently. Getting an additional 8 miles per gallon on average and it has actually handled quite well in the snow/ice of the plow-challenged Pittsburgh streets.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:17 AM
@atlanta: Teix went .317/.404/.615 in 54 games. If he does that over 162, he’s MVP.
He did .306/.400/.563 over the whole season, which in and of itself, is pretty sick.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:18 AM
Damn…didn’t realize Teixeira finished that well.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:20 AM
Like the looks of Marian Hossa’s chick (at #9 on Mondesi’s list). Hockey players pull some amazing tail.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:21 AM
412 – just went through my first Pgh. winter with my new Altima as well. Agree – quite surprised with how well the dealer issued tires worked. The only thing was you had to turn off the computerized traction control system to get up a few hills.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:25 AM
ATL, he finished last season with gawdy numbers, but i dont’ see that happening again. but if he gets anywhere close to those numbers, and the Braves win the east, he could be MVP. My original thought was Francuer would be a better candidate.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:26 AM
is winter as nasty in pitt as it is in cleveland? i dont know how much of the ‘lake effect snow’ you guys get down there.
my mazda speed 6 did fine in the snow this winter, but i couldnt get out of my driveway in the blizzard this weekend just because there was 2 feet and nobody had plowed because it was pointless.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:26 AM
Re: Spitzer
On page 30 there is mention of him wanting to do things that “you might not think were safe”? Hmmm…
These chicks, even at $5000/gig, don’t make enough to have to bang an ugly, creepy dude like Spitzer.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:28 AM
No, we don’t see nearly the snow the Great Lakes area does.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:28 AM
Francouer????? Really?
March 11th, 2008 at 8:30 AM
cleveland has to have some of the worst plowers in the united states
March 11th, 2008 at 8:32 AM
i don’t think Francouer is going to win it. i just think he is more of a team leader/MVP candidate than Tex.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:33 AM
I don’t understand how year in and year out the roads crews act like this is the first time they have ever seen white stuff fall from the sky. Oh and the Weather Channel? Doesn’t exist. They’ve never heard of it.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:33 AM
mmonast…youre not kidding. my development was plowed at 130 on saturday. from 130 sat to 230 sun we got 2 feet of snow and wasn’t plowed a single time, and when we finally were, the main street plowers blocked in the entrance so you had to go over this massive ice speedbump, which i promptly got stuck in.
fuck them, fucking assholes. just get heated streets, thatll take care of everything.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:35 AM
Great link to the SI article on Chris Long, TBL. That kids going to be a force to be reckoned with in the NFL.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:37 AM
The plowing in Pgh leaves a lot to be desired as well. My commute in from the burbs takes ~ 45-60 minutes and it’s fine on a snowy day…until I get into the university section (i.e., Pitt and CMU) section of the city. Remember folks, this is what government handles snow removal. Do you want these assholes getting involved with health care?
March 11th, 2008 at 8:38 AM
http://themdp92.blogspot.com/2008/03/gotta-love-monster-snow-storms.html
don’t mean to shamelessly pimp my blog, but my buddy (who also does some writing for it) took these pictures of how bad it was this weekend for anyone who gives a shit.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:38 AM
@spence: Work has you blocked, unfortunately.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:44 AM
Spencer – You’re doing some nice work on that blog.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:47 AM
Not that I agree, but I think that perhaps Tiger was left off due to his age. At 32, he’s closer to Favre than some of the younger people on the list and is five years older than the oldest on the list.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:47 AM
thanks, appreciate it.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:49 AM
@Benji–I’d predict Teixeira, Chipper…even McCann for a Braves candidate for MVP before I’d predict Francouer. Francouer I think will have a break out season, but it won’t be MVP like…at least in my estimation.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:51 AM
2002 Chevrolet Avalanche here. Getting about 11-12MPG. My only saving grace is my commute is maybe 15 miles a day. Any more than that, and I’d be in a car with a 4-cylinder.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:52 AM
Funniest thing of the snow storm this weekend – The snow plow got stuck in my cul-de-sac. My wife called me over and we were laughing for about 5 minutes because the jerk tossed up a good chunk of my lawn earlier this winter. I was about to start to feel bad and go help when he got out of the rut.
March 11th, 2008 at 8:56 AM
Hey Spence et. al in Big Ten country, did anyone else here about this end to the BTN/Comcast spat?
March 11th, 2008 at 9:01 AM
BTW… Mena Suvari is doing nothing for me.
March 11th, 2008 at 9:02 AM
Snow??? What’s that?
March 11th, 2008 at 9:04 AM
Roethlishotdog…yea i heard about that. im excited to finally get BTN. hopefully NFL Network will follow suit.
March 11th, 2008 at 9:21 AM
I drive a ford escape. Its pretty good on gas. About 30 Bucks to fill it up once a week. Its an 08 though
March 11th, 2008 at 9:22 AM
Suvari looks like a space creature. Always has.
March 11th, 2008 at 9:35 AM
I pay $250 a month in gas. And that’s with a 5-speed, 4-cylinder Hyundai Elantra. That is absurd.
March 11th, 2008 at 9:46 AM
That dude said that Tami Taylor was “decent.”
Uh. When my wife is in her late 30s and just had a baby, I want her to look like that. That’s better than decent.
March 11th, 2008 at 9:50 AM
Oh yeah, I’m all about Tami Taylor. Big time MILF, IMHO.
But, based on her wikipedia entry, it doesn’t appear as though the actress (Connie Britton) has actually had children.
March 11th, 2008 at 10:08 AM
TBL- why are you adding the weekend bloggers during the week? i think they do a great job on the weekend, but no where near what you do.
what are the requirements for the new voice? probably no cuss words so im out of the running
March 11th, 2008 at 10:11 AM
do you have a blog?
March 11th, 2008 at 10:13 AM
no i dont TBL
March 11th, 2008 at 10:21 AM
so what TBL, you have to have a blog to be a new voice? damn im disappointed
March 11th, 2008 at 10:24 AM
TBL – you should go all around the horn and feature a new voice from each region you have an audience – Unfortunately it seems you are pretty saturated in Ohio, Penn and NY so there won’t be a huge spread across the country, but it still would be interesting.
March 11th, 2008 at 10:35 AM
if i could nominate someone to be a voice on here TBL, i would have to go for the guy on here called JACK. i think he has some very good points every time he comments on here. and myself of course as the other
March 11th, 2008 at 11:14 AM
New voices? More from the weekend bloggers? Why?
Why are you letting other bloggers do your work for you? If we wanted to read them, we’d go to their blog. At what point is this site gonna be called “the big lead and friends.”
March 11th, 2008 at 11:55 AM
Also, is it just me, or does the headline “Spitzer linked to prostitution ring” make it sound like Spitzer is involved in the actual operation and not just a customer?
My first thought was “holy shit the governor of NY is running a hooker operation!” only to find out he was only a john. what a letdown.
March 11th, 2008 at 11:58 AM
I spend around $400/month on gas for my 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport. I’m an extreme commuter and yes, I’m looking for another job.
I would also offer a big “NO” on the weekend bloggers/additional voices appearing during the week thing. The Baseball Friend is cool, but I visit her predominantly for TBL commentary.
March 11th, 2008 at 12:06 PM
i would really like to know how Mr Be Easy is paying for those 4 cell phones. is his hot mom fronting the bill, or is Mr. Riley paying the bill?
i smell violation
March 11th, 2008 at 12:08 PM
[...] wise at a staggering 26 and 12 per, is the top freshman in the land and the Washington Times (via TBL) ran one of those, “everyone is asking me if I’m going pro” profiles today. [...]
March 11th, 2008 at 12:15 PM
TBL- i also do not see your vision on Greg Oden. He looks like a big huge waste to me. And why be a fan of his, but not a fan of the best center in the league. Oden will not even be the best big man on his team. That will go to Lamarcus Aldridge. greg oden will be the equivalant of Sam Bowie. Its just ironic they will fail for the same team. PauL Allen has been kicking himself all year for not choosing Durant. If the blazers had durant right now, they woould be in the top 8 in the west.Greg Oden should stick to blogs because he will be nothing in the league. Nothing compared to the best big man in the league, D12.
March 11th, 2008 at 1:00 PM
I would also vote NO for additional bloggers on here. It would not be TBL if more people handle it. It’s bad enough there are people on the weekends, no offense CRM.
March 11th, 2008 at 1:07 PM
The weekend guys do a nice job. I only occasionally get on here during weekends and when I do it’s usually quite late. My heart goes out to them during this time of year when there’s not a great deal of stuff to talk about.
If I may make one suggestion, it would be that “Jesus” write the daily NHL update.
March 11th, 2008 at 1:18 PM
CRM and Imig do a great job. i love that CRM throws in the golf coverage, usually good for a nice lil debate between the golf afficianados who loiter around here on sundays.
