The Significance Of The David Carr Signing: Humor
NFL March 13th. 2008, 11:02am
David Carr signed a contract with the New York Giants yesterday. The contract is worth a million (dollars!) for one year of service. The Associated Press article about the signing was full of facts interesting tidbits great lines:
“One of the reasons I’m excited about coming here is they protect the quarterback well and they have playmakers on the outside.”
Some people might think Carr meant, “I’m coming to New York because the offensive line is too good to let Eli get hurt and they have good players around him to make sure he doesn’t look bad. There’s no way I’m going to have to play!” I think we all know why this 28-year-old quarterback would prefer a situation where he wouldn’t be asked to do much besides play catch with the rookies during the harsh Albany summer:
Taken first by Houston in the 2002 draft, Carr’s career has faltered in recent seasons. He was released by the Texans after the 2006 season and signed a two-year, $6 million deal last year with the Carolina Panthers.
The Panthers released him after this past season.
To tell you the truth, this was the first time I’d thought about David Carr since he made the Pro Bowl throwing bombs to Randy Moss and Andre Johnson for my Madden franchise a couple years ago. Oddly, the AP didn’t mention that.
Carr had a 58.3 passer rating with just three touchdown passes and five interceptions after replacing the injured Jake Delhomme. Carr was eventually replaced by 44-year-old Vinny Testaverde and then undrafted rookie Matt Moore.
Oh yeah… Last season he wore white gloves and got benched for the Chaz Reinhold (NSFW) of quarterbacks – Vinny Testaverde. (My roommate and I believe that Testaverde lives with his mother in Little Italy and throws footballs at her all day to keep in shape while he waits for a team to call.)
Carr will compete with Anthony Wright and Jared Lorenzen for the backup job to Manning, the No. 1 overall pick in 2004.
Even Nick Saban wouldn’t wish that depth chart on Cam Cameron.
Joining the Giants will reunite Carr with quarterbacks coach Chris Palmer, his offensive coordinator in his first four years in Houston.
Isn’t there some sort of anti-trust law that should prohibit this?
Giants coach Tom Coughlin called Carr a talented, athletic player.
I knew there would be long-term effects of the frostbite.
Welcome to New York, David. I’m sure you’ll have a forgetable season!

Him and Joey Harrington are the Coreys Feldman and Haim of this generation…always linked (mostly through failure)

It’s not that bad of a signing TBL. Carr is better than the Pillsbury Throwboy and Anthony Wrong (how many franchises has he been on? Cowboys, Ravens, Raiders, Bengals, Giants that’s all I can remember) He’s cheap and an upgrade good for him. At least he won’t have to keep his hair growing waiting for the Giants to win a game like he did in Houston.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:07 AM
Well, he’s still fared better than Akili Smith or that former drug-addled Fresno State basketball player (Chris something) who could never stick in the NBA. Right?
March 13th, 2008 at 11:07 AM
At least the Coreys had “The Lost Boys” and “Stand By Me”.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:08 AM
His hair looks more effortless than Lex Luger’s, and that’s saying something.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:08 AM
Joey Harrington was never as bad as David Carr was last year. Hell, Babe Laufenberg wasn’t.

What post are we doing college bball updates on?
March 13th, 2008 at 11:10 AM
The World Champion New York Football Giants did fine with this signing, it gives better insurance for the Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning than J-Load and Anthony Wright and it gives David Carr an opportunity to bask in the glow of greatness and maybe it will rub off on him so he can go start for the Jets next year when they are looking for a QB.

1 pm. Hoyas up 12-4 early.

I’m eagerly anticipating the New York Post headline when Mr. Greasy Hair with the white mime gloves has to take the field.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:12 AM
David Carr is unstoppable.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:12 AM
Good call Tuna…I already have the Yahoo! Gamechannel up (a superior product to ESPN’s Gamecast in my opinion) and am toggling between Michigan-Iowa (my Badgers get the winner) and G’Town vs. Nova (Hoyas up 12-4 early)
March 13th, 2008 at 11:13 AM
Dayton up 10-4 early on Xavier
March 13th, 2008 at 11:15 AM
I have Mike and the Mad Dog at the Garden calling the Villanova/ G-Town game so of course Mad Dog is getting everybody’s name wrong…I can’t wait for them to stop doing play by play to talk about Billy Crystal’s at bat…
March 13th, 2008 at 11:16 AM
J Style, TBL didn’t write this, Ron Mexico did.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:17 AM
I can’t wait until Eli gets hurt and the Giants have to burn a timeout just so that Carr can have enough time to decide which color gloves to wear – the red ones or the blue ones.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:18 AM
David Carr ANOTHER Jeff Tedford college wonderboy who can’t play in the NFL, is Aaron Rodgers next?
March 13th, 2008 at 11:18 AM
So, can we expect a similar post related to the Trent Green and Joey Harrington signings or is this just another weak, flimsy dig at the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants?
March 13th, 2008 at 11:20 AM
I live in the camp that says David Carr could have been an O.K starter in the NFL is he wasn’t ruined so early in his career by terrible offensive line. Don’t forget, Carr used to go down quicker than an Eliot Spitzer prostitute (zing). Still, Carr and Harrington now have an NFL dream job… holding a clipboard and getting paid millions to do so.

This is not a dig at the Giants.
/seriously
March 13th, 2008 at 11:25 AM
Anyone of us would trade jobs with Jim Sorgi.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:25 AM
Mistercellaneous…let the Lilliputians sling their arrows at the Gulliver that is the World Champion New York Football Giants…it is the minor inconvenience that greatness brings…as for David Carr he will have all season to figure out what gloves to wear…Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning is impervious to injury and the Herculean efforts of the offensive line will make sure he will stand link the true GIANT that he is.

I am sorry, but being an SEC fan and seeing Lorenzen in college. I would much rather have Lorenzen in there then Carr. What has Carr EVER done good in the NFL?? How is his psyche not totally shot? He probably doesn’t feel like he can pull up to a drive thru and order food without messing up.
Give me Lorenzen with Eli hurt and the game on the line. He was always gutsy and the same can’t be said about Carr.
Is Carr gonna stick with wearing the gloves no matter what the temperature is???
March 13th, 2008 at 11:33 AM
Comedy from the USA Today archives.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:39 AM
If Ryan Leaf wasn’t such a douchebag, even he would still be riding on this gravy train.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:43 AM
I am waiting for the outrage from Whitlock that Jeff George is still waiting for a call.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:44 AM
David Carr heard that NYC is a better place to launch an underwear modeling career than North Carolina.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:44 AM
Frank Reich was the greatest back up QB ever in the NFL
there i said it
March 13th, 2008 at 11:45 AM
Cade McNown and Akili Smith must have REALLY been bad
March 13th, 2008 at 11:45 AM
TBL, you should have gotten a quote from RomanWarHelmet and placed it in this piece. It woulda been high comedy.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:46 AM
Irish, I have to disagree. Steve Young deserves that honor.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:46 AM
That may be true Irish, but who was the greatest third stringer?
March 13th, 2008 at 11:47 AM
If David Carr becomes the next “Bachelor,” I’m cracking skulls.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:50 AM
Enough about Carr, back to basketball.
TBL, do you think if Dayton loses to Xavier (getting pummelled now)they are still in the field of 65?
March 13th, 2008 at 11:50 AM
irish, Don Strock and Earl Morrall want to talk to you.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:53 AM
im a bills fan so i gotta go with my team, but that is true Jay. Those guys at least won super bowls
March 13th, 2008 at 11:54 AM
Where can we view the Dayton/Xavier game online?
March 13th, 2008 at 11:55 AM
unlikely. Carr is married with a kid – and refuses to take off his wedding ring. Even during games.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:57 AM
Yahoo Gamechannel is probably best for Dayton/XU, still a little slow. I have live feed again. Dayton made a run and are down 6 at half. Although they have played tired and have foul trouble. Might be hard for them to close this one out.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:58 AM
Mrs. David Carr. Kind of milfy, IMHO.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:01 PM
Kudos to you 412. I concur.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:01 PM
Actually, Carr wears a piece of tape on his ring finger in place of his wedding ring.
I’m embarrassed that I actually know this.
-1 for me.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:07 PM
bsanders, the kid’s name was chris herron. there was a good book about him and his team, called “fall river dreams.”
March 13th, 2008 at 12:08 PM
Irish…Jeff Hostetler would like to talk to you after you talk to Strock and Morrall
March 13th, 2008 at 12:13 PM
tom brady did a good job backing up mr. personality, drew bledsoe
March 13th, 2008 at 12:23 PM
Bubby Brister is mad at all y’all
March 13th, 2008 at 12:35 PM
kelly holcomb? no? aw…
March 13th, 2008 at 12:37 PM
hostetler had a starting gig in LA raiders i think. Earl Morrall was a starter as well. Brady has the spotlight
yep, i guess its Don Stork and Frank machine gun Reich
March 13th, 2008 at 1:07 PM
I feel bad for David Carr. Coming out of Fresno State, I honestly thought he had all the tools to be an excellent NFL quarterback. And call me delusional, if you’d like, but I think put in the right situation, he could still be a starter someday. Wow, that sounded delusional even to me.
March 13th, 2008 at 2:49 PM
Irish, as an Oilers fan growing up in the early 90s, I learned to hate the Bills, but especially Frank Reich and Don Beebe–he stepped out of bounds before catching that long TD pass!–with a burning passion.
That being said, Frank Reich stepping in and leading the Bills back from 35-3 is one of the greatest single game accomplishments in NFL history.
