David Carr signed a contract with the New York Giants yesterday. The contract is worth a million (dollars!) for one year of service. The Associated Press article about the signing was full of facts interesting tidbits great lines:

“One of the reasons I’m excited about coming here is they protect the quarterback well and they have playmakers on the outside.”

Some people might think Carr meant, “I’m coming to New York because the offensive line is too good to let Eli get hurt and they have good players around him to make sure he doesn’t look bad. There’s no way I’m going to have to play!” I think we all know why this 28-year-old quarterback would prefer a situation where he wouldn’t be asked to do much besides play catch with the rookies during the harsh Albany summer:

Taken first by Houston in the 2002 draft, Carr’s career has faltered in recent seasons. He was released by the Texans after the 2006 season and signed a two-year, $6 million deal last year with the Carolina Panthers.

The Panthers released him after this past season.

To tell you the truth, this was the first time I’d thought about David Carr since he made the Pro Bowl throwing bombs to Randy Moss and Andre Johnson for my Madden franchise a couple years ago. Oddly, the AP didn’t mention that.

Carr had a 58.3 passer rating with just three touchdown passes and five interceptions after replacing the injured Jake Delhomme. Carr was eventually replaced by 44-year-old Vinny Testaverde and then undrafted rookie Matt Moore.

Oh yeah… Last season he wore white gloves and got benched for the Chaz Reinhold (NSFW) of quarterbacks – Vinny Testaverde. (My roommate and I believe that Testaverde lives with his mother in Little Italy and throws footballs at her all day to keep in shape while he waits for a team to call.)

Carr will compete with Anthony Wright and Jared Lorenzen for the backup job to Manning, the No. 1 overall pick in 2004.

Even Nick Saban wouldn’t wish that depth chart on Cam Cameron.

Joining the Giants will reunite Carr with quarterbacks coach Chris Palmer, his offensive coordinator in his first four years in Houston.

Isn’t there some sort of anti-trust law that should prohibit this?

Giants coach Tom Coughlin called Carr a talented, athletic player.

I knew there would be long-term effects of the frostbite.

Welcome to New York, David. I’m sure you’ll have a forgetable season!
