Bracket Madness: West
College Basketball, Gambling March 18th. 2008, 4:35pm
Second reminder of the day to join our bracket and win a free post. If we can get the number of participants over 300, we’ll thrown in a neat little prize that will not be discussed until it hits your mailbox. The West region is widely considered the weakest, and everyone seems to be giving UCLA a free pass to the Final Four for three reasons: Second-seeded Duke went 5-4 in its last nine games, third-seeded Xavier is from the meek A-10, and fourth-seeded Connecticut went 3-3 down the stretch.
1 UCLA -33 vs 16 Mississippi Valley St. – Avoid it, because 30 is a ton of points, even against a team that’s 0-5 against the Top 50 and scored just 26 points against Washington State.
9 Texas A&M -2 vs 8 BYU – BYU hasn’t won in the first round since 1993, but played UNC and MSU tough at neutral sites this year. Think Cougars.
5 Drake -4 vs 12 Western Kentucky – Altogether now – love the Drake.
4 UConn -12.5 vs 13 San Diego – Despite the Big East tourney loss, we’re thinking the Huskies go on a surprise run.
2 Duke -19.5 vs 15 Belmont – The masses love Duke here, so we’ll avoid it.
7 West Virginia -2.5 vs 10 Arizona – Perhaps the best first-round game, and as much as we like Joe Alexander, we’re going with jekyll and hyde ‘Zona.
3 Xavier -7.5 vs 14 Georgia – Tough to wager against the Bulldogs now, especially since Xavier split its last four games. Like Xavier to win, though.
6 Purdue -2.5 vs 11 Baylor – We pray this excrement isn’t on TV. Two crappy teams who closed weak (3-3, 1-2, respectively).
Most likely double-digit seed to win two games: 1) Arizona, 2) Georgia, 3) San Diego.
Highest seed most likely to lose in the first round: Purdue.
Most likely regional final: UCLA vs. Xavier
Sexy Sleeper regional final: Drake vs. Georgia

i want to believe in xavier, but i think ucla will blow through this region

Agreed. UCLA rolls.

There’s a huge gap in the lower half of this bracket. Duke sucks, and I think it’s conceivable that both Arizona and West Virginia could beat them. Xavier is also not particularly strong, especially with their PG banged up. Some out-of-nowhere team is going to come from that bottom half. Call me insane, but I think it’s West Virginia. Huggy Bear finally pulls through.
Of course, they’ll get slaughtered by UCLA in the regional final, as would anybody else in this entire region.
Also: San Diego will beat UConn. And A&M is garbage.

Call me crazy but I have Xavier getting through here in my TBL bracket.
For this to happen UCONN has to beat UCLA and I’m counting on West Virgnia to beat Duke, followed by Xavier beating West Virginia and UCONN. Huge risk but it’s March Madness, why the hell not.

Call ME crazy because I have Zona making it out of this bracket. Too much NBA talent on that roster, and they’re healthy.

The prize is a John Scheyer bobble-head. I got to the staff meeting early and overheard TBL on the phone ordering it.

Bracket Update: 190 Entries @ 4pm MST.

I’ve seen Xavier play twice this year and they can defiantly keep up with a team of UCLA’s caliber. They won’t get a lot of cred because they play in the A-10, but they’re probably the scariest team in that bracket.

For the risk/sake of single-handedly winning some pools, I may take Xavier to escape out of this region.
March 18th, 2008 at 5:43 PM
As much as I’d like to be a good alum and say Drake is going far, they do pull a tough match up 2nd round (if they get past W. KY) I think UConn will pull things together and give it a good run this year.
Obvious choice: UCLA
Sleeper Choice: Arizona
Team I’m rooting for: Drake
Go Dawgs!

I’ve got Duke going down to Xavier. Xavier has great perimeter D, and that’s where Duke lives.
And what is it, we get a post if we win the pool? I realize that this was probably mentioned earlier, but I’m a lazy ass, and don’t feel like looking, I wasted all my energy last night.

Final Four of UCLA, Stanford, UNC, Georgetown with UCLA rolling through in a tight win.

“We are bullish on Wisconsin. We have them in the Final Four in several of our brackets.”
Guess What? That excrement filled, crappy Purdue team beat them twice. I’m sorry that you don’t appreciate Purdue’s defensive style of basketball, but they are not crappy. Hopefully they can prove you wrong and make it to the Sweet 16. If not, I am still thrilled with this group of freshman and their great season.
March 18th, 2008 at 7:32 PM
I did it. I’m the guy with UCLA in the Final Four
(actually under GeauxGeaux)
March 18th, 2008 at 7:42 PM
but i think ucla will blow through this region
I thought they paired the top #1 with the worst #2. If that’s the case, then are you saying that they thought that Tennessee was worse than Duke? Shouldn’t they at worst be in this region?
I know that would put Duke and UNC in the same bracket. But hell, they did that with UConn and Rutgers in the women’s tournament. (not that that anything the women do excuses anything)
March 18th, 2008 at 8:26 PM
Wisconsin should have been the worst #2…I know Duke beat them a year and half ago it seems like but based on where both teams stand now you have the Badgers who rolled through their conference in the regular season and tournament whereas the Blue Devils we only in position to win the ACC because Ty Lawson was hurt when they met in Chapel Hill
Plus if you go off of how each played down the stretch UW was dominant while the Fighting Vitales struggled
March 18th, 2008 at 10:44 PM
I’m in the Group, as “Don’t Taze Me, Hansbrough.”
I don’t get the Arizona love. I know the bottom half of that bracket looks pretty barren, and I know that everyone hates Duke (me included), but … seriously?
March 19th, 2008 at 6:50 AM
“Don’t Taze Me Hansbrough” is so good that I’m pissed I didn’t think of it first…if Psycho T was a campus security guard he would kill hippie protesters due to his strong determination and focus which would be unrivaled by his peers
March 19th, 2008 at 9:03 AM
Purdue is such a crappy team that Matt Painter is one of 4 finalists for Coach of the Year.
March 19th, 2008 at 10:10 AM
Can you please not refer to the Duke team as the Fighting Vitales? I know all of you non-Duke fans think Vitale is all about Duke, and that we — the fans and the team — love him for it — but give me a break. You really think Duke fans like Vitale? He’s done more harm to the program than Cherokee Parks and Josh McRoberts. Disassociate, people!
That being said, I have UCLA winning the West. Any new word on how the two injured players are feeling?
