NCAA Tourney, Day 1 Musings
College Basketball March 21st. 2008, 7:55amA nation collectively groaned at this debacle of an inbounds play. Random ruminations and conjecture, and an update on our bracket challenge:
* It appears as if only four people have perfect brackets in our challenge including – yup, you read that correctly, The Big Deal’s wife!
* Sixteen games were played yesterday, and only one double-digit seed was victorious (Kansas State)
* Favorites went a whopping 13-3. The three underdogs who covered were Belmont, Kansas State and UNLV
* Player who made the most NBA money on Thursday: Bill Walker, Kansas State
* Most impressive run: Washington State’s 29-5 burst against Winthrop. Runner up: Pittsburgh’s 18-0 spurt that finished Oral Roberts
* Weakest all-around effort: Kent State’s 10-point first half
* Most impressive rout: Purdue’s 90-point explosion against Baylor
* Best individual performance: Joe Crawford’s 35 for Kentucky in a loss to Marquette
* MVP of the day: MMOD. We can’t believe how awesome it is. Get in line now, people!

Saw OJ Mayo last night for the 1st time and thinking another year in college might do him good. Beasley did not play as many minutes but seemed to have a greater impact on the game.

Best game was yesterday’s Belmont/Duke game and I got to watch it in person. My buddy kept reminding me that if Belmont won, we would have been witnessing one of the greatest upsets in Tourney history. I think he actually stopped drinking just so he could pay more attention. The best part was that most of the people in the phone booth were rooting for Belmont.

It gets worse everytime I see it…

Belmont was so close. i watched that entire game and it was close the whole game. Henderson was the only Duke player to show up at all.
that coach for belmont did a great job of subbing during the game. He was bringing in fresh players every 4 mins.
that would of been a great win for Belmont who got knocked out the past two years by GTown and UCLA and now Duke.

That inbound pass was horrible…they had everyone bunched up..the guard should have jumped to the out side and they could have hit him with a pass and he would have had 10 feet to shoot it…yuck…that was the only time in the game where I felt Belmont choked under pressure..even the halfcourt heave was close to money…good game..made the rest of yesterdays shit show worth it.

This is a great idea for combining the BCS and the NCAA Tournament from one of the funniest guys on the net–I know it sounds crazy, but just read it…

the past two years i have been in a bracket contest, a woman has won. Last year this lady in my office chose schools based on what there nickname was and what color unis they had.
and the year before that, the lady went to U of F and had no clue about basketball. such bs when there was pots of $1,000 +

what did you think of MAyo last night Nick?
March 21st, 2008 at 8:45 AM
He shot poorly. Shot selection is the only thing holding him back. I think he’ll be sweet in the pros.

I can’t believe how bad Kent State looked. I thought that would be a really frisky 8-9 game, but they just stunk up the joint. After the six turnovers in their first nine possessions, that game got turned off for the rest of the afternoon.
Did I mention that in Columbus Time Warner gives you all the regional feeds for free? I did, right? God, I’m an asshole.

jack, Time Warner in WI used to do the same. you would get every game on an unused station. This year, they just show one other game on something called MeTV. It is bullshit. I want all the games and I want them in HD. NOWWWWW!!!!

i have a LCD tv that when i did the channell loading feature, it gave me HD channells for CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox. i thought that was a neat addition on the TV, so try that out fellas and see if that brings you any HD channells
March 21st, 2008 at 9:06 AM
I thought you needed the HD box to get HD channels, well you do for DTV
March 21st, 2008 at 9:07 AM
i dont have a HD box, some of the new TV s out have that feature. It also has a built in surge protector. cant beat it buddy

Saw Bill Walker 4 times in person as a Soph/Junior in high school. He had Vince Carter hops. He blew his knee out last year, so he’s not quite back yet.

Irish, that reminds me of a What’s Happenin episode where Dewayne Wayne picked football winners based on how cool their helmets looked. I believe someone lost alot of money on the last game because he picked the Buccaneers because they had those awesomly ugly orange and white helmets. He almost got beat up.

I would normally brag about 15 for 16 on opening day but I pretty much went with the chalk this year, very boring bracket on my part.

Who’s The Big Deal?
March 21st, 2008 at 10:39 AM
Gonzo
Dwayne Wayne was on A Different World

Thank you for recognizing Purdue’s outburst. The most points they’ve scored in a game all season.

Just to respond to the comment about women and bracket contests, I definitely didn’t choose my picks based on nicknames or uni colors. Did a lot of homework this week and even made The Big Deal buy the Mega March Madness Package from Directv for full NCAA tourney coverage!

TheBigDeal = TBL2 = Me
Someone tell her the first round means nothing, it’s final four on….

For the record, my bracket in this group is my blow-off, upset bracket. My serious bracket missed only two games.
