Western Kentucky’s Buzzer Shot Beats the Drake for the Tourney’s First Great Upset
College Basketball, Video March 21st. 2008, 3:10pmBest finish of the tournament so far, hands down. Thought the Davidson-Gonzaga game was better, and the second day has been tremendous so far. If you’re judging the announcing call … we’ll go with a six.

Freaking awesome. Best part… I’ve got WK in all my brackets because I studied very hard on learning the brackets. That is a lie. I know a gal that has a grandson on the team (freshman on the bench) and I promised her I’d take them.
How’s that for some Karma. I actually don’t believe in Karma, but if that is what worked today so be it.

I have Davidson in the Sweet 16 so that was a great finish. I’ve been bashing the SunBelt conference for the last two weeks so I’ve got to eat some humble pie for WKU’s win. Not much though because I’m sure Pitt will handle them. South Alabama’s playing now and are losing by double didgits. Lunardi has them in the Sweet 16 beating Butler and Tennessee. Like I’ve been saying this conference is just not strong enough to merit getting an at large.

Bad news for Connecticut fans – AJ Price looked like he blew out a knee, and he hasn’t returned. SD is up, 28-24. Based on his initial reaction, it really doesn’t look like he’ll return.
They’re calling it a “sprained knee” for now, though.

What an unexciting call by Brando.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:21 PM
I hate the Drake!
March 21st, 2008 at 3:24 PM
I like how he starts yelling in the stands. Probably yelling, “Are you proud now dad? Are you proud?” But he’s still not proud because his dad had Drake in the Sweet 16 on his bracket.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:24 PM
Top three first-round finishes in my recent memory:
1. Jermaine Wallace’s falling-out-of-bounds three for Northwestern State
2. Brice Drew’s three for Valpo
3. That one
March 21st, 2008 at 3:26 PM
This destroyed my bracket, but what a finish. I love march.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:26 PM
Still don’t think anyone can touch Drew’s amazing shot, except, of course, Laettner, which wasn’t in the 1st round
March 21st, 2008 at 3:27 PM
Dear Drake,
Thank you for shitting the bed. You have now sank my battleship.
Much appreciated,
The ASU Sun Devil.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:28 PM
It’s close. Drew’s was the best-designed inbounds play I have seen. But Wallace’s three was more preposterous.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:28 PM
That shot booted my bracket to number 2 in the Big Lead Crew
March 21st, 2008 at 3:29 PM
I still don’t know how to locate the bracket challenge on ESPN.com. so I can’t tell you how I am doing.
TBL, great Seinfeld reference.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:29 PM
Our brackets aren’t dead yet.
/hoping beyond hope that San Diego will win
March 21st, 2008 at 3:29 PM
Where did all this South Alabama BS come from? I want to punch Seth Davis in the face.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:31 PM
Is it just me or has CBS developed a considerable skill for cutting from one game to another that’s less than 6 seconds away from going to commercial?
March 21st, 2008 at 3:33 PM
Try this Gonzo
March 21st, 2008 at 3:33 PM
Gonzo, try this: http://games.espn.go.com/tcmen/frontpage
March 21st, 2008 at 3:34 PM
And a 10 seed no less. A 10? And add the fact that they have to travel less than 200 miles for their game. South Alabama is a farce. Compare them to other 10 seeds (AZ – close game, Davidson – win, St. Mary’s – close game). I don’t think USA would be within 15 points of any of those teams.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:34 PM
Actually, they jinx games. They switched from Texas to Georgetown, just in time for UMBC to go scoreless in about 8 minutes. They did the same with Tennessee/American earlier. They’d switch to it, Tennessee would go on a run. They’d leave it, and American would come back.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:36 PM
Thanks Eman and Hef. I’ll have to check that at home. I dont even remember who i picked, so if you see Red Mosquito up near the top, then better get some bug spray.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:37 PM
It warrants mentioning that UMBC has some tremendous hairlines. Clyde Drexler would be proud.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:38 PM
And add the fact that they have to travel over 250 miles for their game.
/fixed (as opposed to Butler’s roughly 400)
March 21st, 2008 at 3:41 PM
That was a good game, the Davidson one was really good too.
I was all excited because I thought i took W. Kentucky, but forgot I had gone back to Drake at the last second. Good news for me though, Drake’s the only Sweet 16 team i’ve lost yet
March 21st, 2008 at 3:41 PM
@Jay but don’t you think that they have been pimped by all the so called experts of being this exceptional mid major team and now they are just getting waxed.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:43 PM
this GTown game sucks. why don’t the put on butler? those early games were great, the these games aren’t close. it might be time for a beer run except for the 14 inches of snow that is coming down
March 21st, 2008 at 3:44 PM
Probably. If you mean at-large mid majors. Drake and Butler got all the love all year, and Drake is gone too (from a Sun Belt team that was worse than USA, no less)
March 21st, 2008 at 3:45 PM
Benji…you must be in MI…Yes?
We got hit with 3-4 already and another 6-10 on the way…Fucking MIchigan anyway
March 21st, 2008 at 3:47 PM
Wisconsin. it took me 45 minutes and 2 guys from work to dig my car out. stupid rear wheel drive. i took it out on my girlfriend (not physically), so, i think its gonna be all basketball with the boys tonight.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:50 PM
How was WKU worse than USA? They had identical conference records and WKU won the tourney. Drake shouldn’t hang the head it was an exceptional game and that’s what the NCAA should be trying to give us. I just think an at large from a better conference (not even a major a team from the MVC or the CAA would have been better) would have given us a better match up. And at a 10 seed it seems like they were never close to being out.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:53 PM
UConn looks awful.
Just put UCLA in the F4 already.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:57 PM
did i just hear Bryant Gumbel doing some reporting?
March 21st, 2008 at 4:08 PM
Bulldogs baby!!!
March 21st, 2008 at 4:10 PM
Butler will knock off TEN.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:32 PM
Wow, if that is indeed the case, then why was everybody on South Alabama? And why were they a 10 and WKU a 12?
March 21st, 2008 at 4:42 PM
I wouldn’t count this Connecticut loss – assuming it happens – as a major upset. The Price injury was a huge factor. The guy was the one player the team couldn’t lose. They could win without Thabeet. Price was outstanding at season’s end. There will be a post for the night games.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:45 PM
Brando just said “and we’re tied” after that layup.
San Diego is winning 59-58
March 21st, 2008 at 4:56 PM
SD is a damn efficient team. But Thabeet looks 87x better than he did last season. Hell, 12x better than he did in December. Kid’s got no ceiling right now, and he’ll be a much better pro than Eddy Curry.
Not that that’s saying much.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:58 PM
Does UConn have any shooters on its team? Anyone who can knock down a 3?
March 21st, 2008 at 5:05 PM
5.2 seconds. What do you do, down by 1? If I’m Conn, I put Stanley Robinson on the kid Jones, and face-guard him all over the court so he can’t touch it. Then, I pray when he does get it, Thabeet is there to get the block.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:05 PM
Mike – AJ Price. He’s on the bench; left with a knee injury in the first half.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:07 PM
onions
March 21st, 2008 at 5:07 PM
Wow. Kid it OVER Robinson! 1.2 seconds left in Connecticut’s season.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:09 PM
Bam! Man, did I need this one.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:09 PM
Wow, another one.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:09 PM
Brando’s been bad, but “San Diego makes 13 so lucky in Tampa” wasn’t bad.
Sucks for Connecticut to not even get a shot off. That hurt a lot of brackets. If Thabeet stays around, and Price doesn’t knee major surgery, this could be a FF team next year.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:09 PM
And now my Drake pick doesn’t kill me. YES
If UCLA wins tomorrow, they get the San Diego/WKU winner and then possibly Duke. I guess the experts were right.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:12 PM
thats my first sweet 16 out…damnit…at least I dont have them through to the elite 8
March 21st, 2008 at 5:14 PM
Ok everyone, you have an hour to eat and shower before the night session. For what it’s worth (nothing):
Around noon:
Clark “Chalk†Kellog just said he didn’t think there would be many surprises today. Seth Davis disagreed with him. We tend to side with Davis here (except his Siena over Vandy pick).
And now, we have bet on Siena. Dogs went 3-5 in day games, which isn’t bad after going just 3-13 yesterday.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:15 PM
Gotta give the early session a solid “A.” Could have been an A+ if South Alabama would have shown up and made a game of it. That was the #2 game I was looking forward to today (behind Gonzaga/Davidson, which didn’t disappoint).

Harder shot, but not a cinderella.
March 21st, 2008 at 6:34 PM
Kansas State sexually assaulted my bracket last night. Where’s the SVU when you need them.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:46 PM
Anyone else think Tim Brando’s call of this shot sucked donkey dick?
