An Ode to Stephen Curry
College Basketball March 24th. 2008, 9:21am
Here’s how we watched Davidson Friday and Sunday: Our eyes, at all times, were glued on the wiry, bogglingly prolific shooter with the passionate mom, Stephen Curry. (Aside: We just scoured the net for photos or video of Sonya Curry, and there’s nothing. Lil’ help?) Although we grew up rooting for Georgetown – Northern Virginia roots and all – we found great joy in watching the frail sophomore curling around screens and kicking at the fences erected by society (looking at you, Virginia Tech and Tobacco Road). Is there an individual player left who is more exciting to watch? Neitzel? Joe Alexander? Kevin Love?
And now, we’re slightly depressed that we’re going to be deprived of Curry for four more days, when Davidson’s ephemeral NCAA tournament run will certainly end at the hands of the physical, defensive-minded Wisconsin Badgers. It should be noted, however, that we thought Gonzaga and Georgetown would surely bounce the Wildcats.
When the Georgetown game ended, and Curry celebrated with teammates, his jersey untucked, hanging like the tongue of a labrador retriever – or the defenders assigned to chasing him around – we wondered aloud to Easter crowd huddled around the TV watching: This kid’s the best college shooter since JJ Reddick, right? In the last 20 years, who has been better? Ray Allen? Dennis Scott?
Here’s what we wrote about Davidson back on November: 16. Davidson – The man pictured above is Stephen Curry, son of Dell. He’s money. Averaged 21 as a freshman and the Wildcats went 29-5. All five starters are back and the early schedule – Duke, UCLA, UNC – will help come March. It’s a travesty this team isn’t ranked in either poll.

Dude was money when it counted. Gtown shot 60% and still lost. I had Gtwon going further in the tourney but when the underdog wins like this it is ok and make the tourney that much better.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:28 AM
Completely agree, superjakrs.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:28 AM
This was a tough situation for VT. Up until the 10th grade, Stephen was still shooting from his waist and was a late-bloomer, which is why he got very little attention from any major program other than VT. Besides, VT got early commitments from Nigel Munson and Tyrone Appleton early in the recruiting process, and when Stephen became a legitimate D-1 prospect late in high school, VT was out of scholarships and offered him a walk-on spot for the first year and would be on scholarship from the 2nd year-forward. Ironically enough, Tyrone Appleton didn’t qualify, so he would’ve gotten the scholarship anyway.

that kid from Florida was a money shooter the past years when they won the titles, that humphrey kid. But the point totals that this kid is putting up in the NCAA tourney, he only ranks behind Oscar Robertson and the big Wilt.
it was nice to see his father, Dell, showing emotion along with his wife. He has to be one proud dad and his son will make one GM very happy in the NBA one day
March 24th, 2008 at 9:31 AM
Surely some newspaper has done a profile on the Curry family with pictures. I think there’s a column to be done here on Sonya Curry’s role. Too much credit is being given to Dell when it’s apparent Sonya is the key to this Davidson tournament run.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:32 AM
The Hoyas should’ve won that game. For the life of me I can’t figure out why Hibbert didn’t get the ball. But at least we get to see Mama Curry for one more weekend.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:33 AM
i have to add it was nice to see Joe Alexander talking smack to Duke players that game was he was blocking shots. He literally took over again. When he hit that three to put them up, there was no looking back.
im excited to see WVU beat Xavier and to see Louisville beat Tenn
March 24th, 2008 at 9:33 AM
I had Davidson beating both Gonzaga and GTown… insert Tiger Woods fist pump
That dribble-behind-the-back-and-step-back three to put Davidson up by five was absolutely SICK. That was a Holy Shit moment if I’ve ever seen one.
And yeah, someone get some pics of Sonya Curry up. She is quality.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:34 AM
How did the ACC miss on this guy? If Duke could only pull Scheyer’s scholarship and give it to this kid. Wait, no, I hate Duke.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:35 AM
maybe sonya curry was a Charlotte Hornet dancer back in the day. Thats probably where Dell pulled that piece of ass from
March 24th, 2008 at 9:37 AM
@NSR
I don’t know many ACC coaches who recruit 5′11, 140 lbs. shooting guards. Misses happen from time to time.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:37 AM
according to Wiki, she was a VT volleyball player. Tyra would be proud. If anyone needs me, i’ll be searching for pictures.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:37 AM
I thought Joe Alexander was a bit too cocky and quite the gunner. He would’ve been better served to drive to the basket than settle for those 1 foot inside the line jumpers that he bricked.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:39 AM
@irishmafia
Sonya Curry played on VT’s volleyball team, so that’s where they met.

Stephen Curry is making March so much more memorable for all of us because he’s a definitive PLAYER doing something special. Often times it’s the team runs or the coaches who orchestrate it that tend to all blend together when you think of Dances past. Not so with Curry, who is putting a face to this glorious mini-run. That is why everyone is falling in love with it.
That and the fact that he looks 14.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:40 AM
While Curry was undersized and the big boys wanted him to go to prep school, VT was his father’s alma mater. They didn’t have a scholarship for him? It’s not like the kid was crap in high school – he was a good scorer.
Then again, that was great for him – kind of like how Jordan got cut from his high school team. Setbacks can be a good thing.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:40 AM
I love Joe Alexander but it’s tough to garner excitement from him…he is intense and I think runs the floor looking like an assassin. I am impressed with that…Curry is a hell of a shooter and if he plays his cards right he probably can have the same type of NBA career as his Dad…that kid is not just a 3 point shooter…he is a deadly shooter with a Mid-range jumper as well..those guys push good teams over the top.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:41 AM
412 the link doesn’t work!!!!!!
March 24th, 2008 at 9:41 AM
@nick p- thats my type of player right there, Joe Alexander. He is making a name for himself since the big east tourney
March 24th, 2008 at 9:41 AM
NOLAN…. stop making excuses for Greenberg F*n up the fact that all he had to do was provide a scholarship.. no recruiting involved as his ole man’s No. 30 jersey’s sit atop Cassell Coliseum retired…
March 24th, 2008 at 9:42 AM
i knew sonya’s role was underreported. no surprise she WAS the big-time athlete in the family.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:42 AM
whitlock is dying for a pic LOL
someone help the poor guy
March 24th, 2008 at 9:43 AM
Hibbert had his first foul shot with 2 minutes left in the game. That tells me he was afraid to play hard down low.
Nice game Georgetown LaToyas.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:45 AM
Apparently Tiffany Amber-Theissen gave Jason the willies this weekend.
Get the man some MILF already.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:46 AM
I had G-town going a lot farther than they did. Hibbert does not play up to his size or potential and is just too weak. On paper, he should have had a monster day and just tore it up, but he was just way too timid. That being said, I am thinking the Wolves will pick him and continue the streak of draft busts.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:46 AM
@TBL
VT got Munson and Appleton very early in the process (if I’m not mistaken, both in their Junior years) before schools had even thought about recruiting him. Seth couldn’t pull one of the scholarships from Munson or Appleton, so he did what he could. He offered Stephen a walk-on spot his first year and would be on scholarship each subsequent year. It’s not like Dell couldn’t have afforded it. What’s ironic is that Appleton didn’t end up qualifying, so he would’ve had the ’ship anyway. Nobody envisioned Stephen being this good w/ his height and frame. Misses happen.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:48 AM
Hibbert is just big…but He is definitely not as tough as the Traditional G-town big man…the TV shot the other day at the Big East Tourney of John Thompson Sr. just yelling at him from the sidelines showed me a lot. Sr. would never have tolerated the softness…and I am not saying that to knock JTIII but he is a different coach…he comes out of the Princeton style.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:48 AM
LOL @beagle
Was Greenberg supposed to pull the scholarship from Munson or Appleton? Dude, everybody f’d this one up. Nobody saw this coming. Misses happen. How did Steve Nash end up at Santa Clara?
March 24th, 2008 at 9:49 AM
back from Vegas. Damn you Indiana, Oregon, St. Joe’s, Kansas (over/under), Texas (can’t cover) and USC!!!!
March 24th, 2008 at 9:49 AM
Thank You, Chris Mottram of the Sporting News
March 24th, 2008 at 9:51 AM
That’s a MILF? Eh.
Roy Hibbert is an embarrassment.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:58 AM
Roy Hibbert deserves to be the top pick in the WNBA
March 24th, 2008 at 10:00 AM
Roy Hibbert> Eric Dampier
March 24th, 2008 at 10:05 AM
Curry reminds me of Reggie Miller. I don’t think he’s as good defensively, but the way they come off of screens and shoot, and those long arms, reminds me of Reggie.
March 24th, 2008 at 10:05 AM
As much as I hate to admit that anyone on Texas is good, AJ Abrams is a baller. Dude couldn’t miss in Little Rock over the weekend.
March 24th, 2008 at 10:09 AM
I like Michael Flowers’ chances to keep him under 25
March 24th, 2008 at 10:09 AM
robin lopez > hibbert
brook lopez > hibbert
Hibbert is one of the softest, un-coordinated centers I have ever seen. Im glad to see Georgetown get beat. All talk about how great they were all year and now this.
March 24th, 2008 at 10:24 AM
roy hibbert is a 7′2 waste of a jersey.
March 24th, 2008 at 10:50 AM
Afraid to say it but Wally with Miami Ohio back in the day was lights out for the tourney runs. don’t know about the rest of his seasons but I can remember him just being unstoppable in the tourney. And evidently you can play in the nba by just being able to stand in one spot and shoot all day.
March 24th, 2008 at 10:54 AM
The Curry mom has definitely had some plastic surgery. There is a picture of her in an old VT Volleyball program: http://www.hokiesports.com/volleyball/volleyball99MG.pdf on page 25.
March 24th, 2008 at 10:54 AM
I took a public speaking class with Dell Curry my freshman year. He was such a humble guy–of course I was had a severe case of hero worship at the time, so it was hard to really focus on working on my speech technique. I am so happy for him as Stephen’s dad and so wish Stephen was wearing the orange and maroon.
March 24th, 2008 at 10:57 AM
Frail? Come on, he’s not THAT small.
March 24th, 2008 at 11:03 AM
I think 6-3, 180 is being mighty generous. Extremely.
March 24th, 2008 at 11:05 AM
aarond – Photos’s probably too small to tell, but nice find.
March 24th, 2008 at 11:11 AM
The fact that he is Dell Curry’s son makes it that much cooler.
Do Ricky Pierce or Dale Ellis have sons in college? I hope they’re coming soon.
March 24th, 2008 at 11:18 AM
Some solid talent of that VT volleyball team back in the day. The chick on pg. 14 looks like she would have enjoyed being in that locker room during shower time.
Props to Dell for staying with his college sweetheart.
March 24th, 2008 at 11:18 AM
Of course, all the Hibbert hate in this thread leads to a natural conclusion: start fitting him for a Timberwolves jersey.
March 24th, 2008 at 11:35 AM
His mom is hot. I dont care how much work she may or may not have. And he seems like a good kid, he’ll make a nice stepson.
I’m 6′3 190. There’s no way in the world Stephen is 6′3 and if he’s 165lbs I’d be surprised. He’s a Reggie Miller/Rip Hamilton type player. Or, better yet, Shawn Respert. A great small shooter. He moves without the ball better than Respert and is just as much of a pure shooter. He also reminds me a bit of JJ Redick. Except Redick is bigger, stronger, and moves better and was more adept at finding space for his shot — though he never seemed to need much.
He’s a shooting guard trapped in an undersized point guard’s body. I love the kids game, but his pro propects are dim unless he grows another 4 or 5 inches or develops high-level PG skills
March 24th, 2008 at 12:31 PM
I hate the Twin Towers!! They’re the new Joakim Noah.
March 24th, 2008 at 12:39 PM
@ Sportsgal – Don’t confuse awkward power shots near the rim for similarity in game. (If you do, why not throw in Hansbrough?) Brook Lopez is three times the player that Noah was in college and will have a solid 10-12 year career in the Assoc.
March 24th, 2008 at 12:45 PM
No no no, I didn’t mean ability wise they’re the new Joakim Noah. I meant they’re as annoying to me as Joakin Noah was last year. Always jawing and celebrating their shots, etc.
March 24th, 2008 at 1:01 PM
@sportsgal- here is a video for you

March 24th, 2008 at 1:08 PM
Anyone backing Wisconsin? Anyone? Bueller?
They shut down Beasley (did that kid play the 2nd half?), and shut down Neitzel all season long. The Badgers will live with 30+ from Curry as long as they shut down the rest of the team. Akognon had 31, CSF had 56. Beasley had 23, Walker 18, rest of K-State had 14.
March 24th, 2008 at 2:41 PM
Thanks, irish! I love that video, he’s such a douche bag!
March 24th, 2008 at 4:49 PM
@rabid
I was gonna say Respert. That guy was about as close to a pure shooter as State’s ever had.
