Actually, Smith’s family is well off. His dad – if memory serves – has owned his own company for many years. They have money. His parents are close to him, and they are still married (or were a few years ago). In my limited time spent with him and his family (at games, over the phone), I got the impression NBA folks are the ones who steered him into the league.

I know one former NBA player, who also spent some time in an NBA front office, told Smith’s parents JR would ‘definitely’ be drafted in the first round. Smith, in my dealings with him, was a very nice kid who probably wouldnt have qualified anyway had he gone to UNC.

But I’ve never seen anyone dunk like him at the HS level. (The two best high school performances I’ve ever seen are one ridiculous game from Travis Outlaw at an AAU tournament in Vegas, and a point guard by the name of Max Schafer, who briefly played at Princeton, but put on a display i’ll never forget in winning a county title while playing against kids who wound up at Syracuse and Rutgers. If the school sold tape of the game, I’d buy it).

Smith was doing some sick, sick shit while dunking in HS. Reverse jams, nasty dunk-backs – the kid was an absolute monster.

How would the Magic fare without Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis? I’m guessing they wouldn’t play .500 without them.
