Sports Talk Radio at Its Best (Or Worst?)
Media Gossip/Musings, Video March 27th. 2008, 2:51pmWe talked about this yesterday and now, Rotten Apple Sports has the video: Two radio jokers discussing – on, it should be noted, the Yankees’ channel – the merits of building a new stadium for the Bronx Bombers. If you have no clue who these guys are, you’re not missing much. But this profile from a few years ago in the New Yorker is pretty informative.

Of course they don’t *need* a new stadium, but the Steinbrenners are investing in a new stadium for the same reason anyone takes on such projects…the opportunity and prospects for more straight cash homey and more power to them.

That was insane…and it lasted 2 hours…but In their defense…their being on the Yankee network has not effected their work…Randy Levine runs the Yankees business and the network and they openly talk of the disgust of him…but the fact that Mad Dog is a SF Giant fan and hates both teams and Mike is a Yankee fan and hates the Mets makes my afternoon rough since they know nothing about the Mets and anything that comes up Met related is down played and trashed…Like the Met Trying to get Johan Santana…that was dismissed by those two for 3 months…and when they got him..no big deal.

that new yorker piece is interesting but i still prefer mushnick’s description of francesa best:

Roman, I am with you. They know their shit, and I love hearing them talk baseball. But they clearly put out no effort to learn the Mets. I’ve taken a break from them since football ended, but will come back probably next week.

I don’t know much about them–just what you guys mostly say. But I sure wish I was in a market that could carry a local show in that time slot so that I don’t have to listen to Tirico and SAS.

That is tremendous. Mushnick is the man; I miss having the privilege of reading the Post on the subway every morning. I may be dumber because of it, but I think it was worth it.

TBL: Why no love for MMD? They may not be everyones cup of tea, but damn are they entertaining. You must not have grown up in this area. And Their show hasn’t changed one bit since they have started being simulcast on YES 4 years ago. They rock. I obv think MIke has a HUGE ego and that Chris gets annoying, but still a fun show. Also, you HAVE to check out this rant by Chris on the Pacman: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Zy6ShZYlj68

i hate them both. they go out of the way to tweak Met fans. that being said, i miss them now that I am reduced to Mike and Mike in the morning, thank goodness for sirius satelite….

Aren’t Francesa and Russo the biggest names in Sports Talk? They have a 5 hour afternoon drive show on the biggest STR station in the country.
Rome, thanks to syndication, probably makes more money.

I highly doubt Rome makes more money from his radio show than MMD for their radio show. Rome may make more due to his ESPN show, but radio show to radio show, its gotta be MMD.

I actually don’t know what MMD is.

Francesa used to be CBS’ college football guru back in the day. He was Mel Kiper back before Kiper and his ‘do went big time. As sick as I am of sports talk radio, and as much of a douchebag I think Russo is, if I lived in NY, I’d listen to them every day.

Earlier (or later?) in the show, Russo and Francesa were discussing the personal seat licenses (or as some of my fellow Philadelphia Eagles season ticket holders, who had to pay these when the new stadium was built, personal extortion licenses) the Giants fans are going to have to pay for their seats in the new stadium. Some of the PELs for choicer seats, which have been in some families for generations, will be as much as $10,000. As Francesa noted, a guy with six tickets, who has had them in his family for 40 years, is going to have to come up with $60,000 to keep them in the new place — and Giants Stadium is a perfectly good place to see a game unless you are an owner who wants more box revenue. Then Russo blathered about how he has no sympathy for the season ticket holders and that if they don’t like it, don’t pay it — of course, if they don’t pay, they lose their seats — and if they do pay it, they can’t bitch. As Mushnick would point out (he just might tomorrow), Russo, who never pays for a ticket to any event, has some balls to put down the average Joe who gripes about having to pay PEL money. I can tell you every fellow Eagles season ticket holder I know who was faced with paying for PELs bitched about it — and they paid, because there’s no alternative if you want to keep your seat. Francesa is a windbag, but Russo is a flat out no talent elitist moron. BTW, so is the poor man’s Russo, Craig Carton, who does the shtick that got him chased out of New Jersey, with Boomer Esiason in Imus’s old WFAN morning slot now.
