Ballin’: David Stern Shows Bloggers Some Love
NBA March 28th. 2008, 10:44am
Denver 118, Dallas 105: The Mavericks were blitzed 58-35 in the second half and now are just 1/2 a game ahead of the Warriors and one game ahead of the Nuggets in the contest for the 7th playoff spot in the West. You know they won’t be able to hold onto it. Will Cuban show mercy on Avery because of Dirk’s injury, or will it get ugly? And don’t you just love how the NBA stepped in and told Mark Cuban that he must open his locker room to bloggers? Priceless quote from Cubes: “…We will encourage all bloggers to apply, whether they be someone on blogspot who has been posting for a couple weeks, kids blogging for their middle school Web site or those that work for big companies.”
Golden State 111, Portland 95: An early deficit gave off the impression that maybe the Warriors were overlooking the Brandon Roy-less Blazers, which would have been understandable, since Denver Dallas, San Antonio and Dallas are looming on the schedule. Stephen Jackson would have none of it, and he scored 14 during the Warriors 40-point third quarter outburst to help the home team pull away.
Detroit 85, Miami 69: Be honest – where does this starting five rank in the annals of weakest starting lineups in NBA history (not hyperbole, promise): Chris Quinn, Ricky Davis, Mark Blount, Kasib Powell, and Earl Barron. With the exception of Davis, who is easily one of the most petulant and selfish players the NBA has seen this decade, and Blount, a gifted but soft player, the other three could easily be in the NBDL. We’re not kidding when we ask – could the current Heat team, minus Wade and Marion, who are hurt, take down UNC?

Besides Dallas vs Denver last night was weak. Go Nuggets!
March 28th, 2008 at 10:47 AM
C’mon, Davis could easily be in the NBDL too.
March 28th, 2008 at 10:49 AM
Ask Nick Van Exel about Cuban. The guy talks about how he is a player’s owner and a voice of the fan but is sort of a hypocrite. One thing you can not take away from him is that he was the owner when Dallas became relevant again in hoops. How did Tractor Traylor work out for the Bucks? That Dirk guy worked out.
March 28th, 2008 at 10:49 AM
Ricky Davis was also a part of the 2002-03 Cavs, which has to be up there for worst in a long time. However, it enabled Clev to draft Lebron, so maybe it could simultaneously qualify as best starting 5 ever?
March 28th, 2008 at 10:50 AM
And yes, the current Heat would piss-pound UNC by at least 30.
March 28th, 2008 at 10:51 AM
That is a God-awful line-up. TBL, you should be using some other college team than a predicted second round loser to play the worst pro vs. best college comparison.
March 28th, 2008 at 10:51 AM
Was cubes letting high school newspaper reporters in the locker room?
March 28th, 2008 at 10:52 AM
Nuggets are such an up and down team. If they get into the playoffs this year I’m happy it won’t be another first round bow out to San Antonio. Finally, someone else can work the Nuggets 4 games in a row.
March 28th, 2008 at 10:52 AM
I have a theory about the “_____ pro team couldn’t beat _______ college team.” I think that’s BS, because most guys on any professional team were the best player on their college team (some of them by far the best player). So the talent level is so much higher on pro teams than college teams.
Besides, TBL, I thought UNC was overrated?
March 28th, 2008 at 10:53 AM
You never know. some college softball team just beat the us womens olympic team.
March 28th, 2008 at 10:54 AM
Every NBA team would kill every college team. It’s a ridiculous argument.
March 28th, 2008 at 10:55 AM
Easily the worst starting 5 in NBA history. If you think it sucks just reading it on this webpage, you should see that pile of shit actually play for a quarter or two. It will blow your mind.
March 28th, 2008 at 10:55 AM
Ok then what about the all wooden team, or the first team all americans.
March 28th, 2008 at 10:55 AM
how the hell did softball and us womens olympics get brought up in here
March 28th, 2008 at 10:56 AM
Mark Cuban one funny ass mother%$#@*
March 28th, 2008 at 10:57 AM
I don’t know how Miami is averaging 92.3 ppg. That has to have dropped since Wade went out for the season (again).
March 28th, 2008 at 10:57 AM
@nwilson: Dominating pitcher no-hit that team. They should just sign her up and take her along to China.
@Nick: Agree completely. All of a sudden, Lawson isn’t so much faster than his opponent, the great shooters are average, especially at an NBA three, and Hansbrough would get nullified. Heat 88, UNC 60.
March 28th, 2008 at 10:57 AM
Nick did you also think USA basketball would never lose. To think every NBA is some unbeatable behemoth is absurd. Especially is college refs called the game (charges, traveling, palming, etc)
March 28th, 2008 at 10:59 AM
You forgot about the “Hansbrough is a tenacious warrior who plays harder than everyone else” factor.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:00 AM
Triple AAA Fresno beat the Giants. Are we not seeing that in the tournament in a one game elimination format any team could be beaten? UNC would beat the Heat once maybe twice out of 15 games probably. Rules (number of fouls, etc.), home court, three point shot all factors that would have to alternate.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:01 AM
First off, the international game is a completely different game. Shorter 3 point lines, longer clock, weirdly officiated. Plus we’re talking about international, professional MEN. Not 19-20 year old kids.
All Wooden Team might only lose by 20 to the worst NBA team.
And if they play the game at college rules, Mark Blount would be the best 3 point shooter on the court, and they’d just crush easier.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:01 AM
Do people realize Blake Ahearn and Chris Quinn played combined 65 minutes last night.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:02 AM
TBL has been influenced by commentator reactions before (see Kim K), maybe it is happening with UNC?
March 28th, 2008 at 11:02 AM
And yes TBL, I am aware of the Kim K post with the cellulite.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:02 AM
Every NBA team would kill every college team. It’s a ridiculous argument.
I’d normally agree with this sentiment. But Ty Lawson is NBA-ready and would dominate Chris Quinn, Ellington is also a first-round pick right now, ditto for Hansbrough, and Ginyard might be a 2nd round pick next year. Danny Green has probably played his way into the draft.
Bench depth might be a problem, though.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:02 AM
All of those 3 point shooters at UNC look so good because that shot is a layup. College basketball is not basketball. It’s a joke.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:04 AM
Ty Lawson and Chris Quinn in college.
Chris Quinn, a joke in the pros, was better in college.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:05 AM
TBL has been influenced by commentator reactions before (see Kim K), maybe it is happening with UNC?
LOL
Too funny.
Fact: UNC is a very good basketball team. No denying it.
Opinion: I don’t think UNC is ‘all that’ (read: Best team in the country or as dominant as the stats/results indicate).
March 28th, 2008 at 11:06 AM
I honestly think Heat vs. UNC would be close. I don’t care what league you play in, if you watch these guys play, they simply suck. They are poorly coached, have no chemistry, don’t play well together, and just suck individually as well. A monumentally shitty NBA team vs. a seemingly very good college team wouldn’t be as easy to call in my eyes. I don’t think a few of those guys would even get significant playing time on the tarheels.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:08 AM
TBL: I have a post awaiting moderation. Please allow it.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:08 AM
Somehow international players are Men just becasue they are international? Greivis Vasquez avg 30 mins a game for Venezuala in 2007 FIBA tourney.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:09 AM
@TBL-JR SMith really lit it up last night with 13 points
March 28th, 2008 at 11:09 AM
I agree that it might be a good game. Note that in 2 years many of the UNC players will be playing in the “League”, it wouldn’t be a ridiculous argument then.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:09 AM
College Basketball is not basketball? And exactly what is that iso one on one slop that the NBA puts out on a nightly basis? They said a USA dream team would never lose. They’ve lost. Would a champion from another league like Italy or Argentina beat a NBA team, maybe. One game one night it could happen. How does a 15 beat a 2? How do the Bobcats beat the Lakers?
March 28th, 2008 at 11:10 AM
JR Smith had a sweet 360 alley oop layup last night, saw it on SC this morning.
/Stayed in bed this morning and was an hour late to work, hungover.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:11 AM
Hansbrough is a first round pick? Will he set the NBA record for turnovers and shots blocked in a single game?
March 28th, 2008 at 11:11 AM
In a Heat vs. UNC game, does Riley coach the Heat or scout the Tar Heels?
March 28th, 2008 at 11:11 AM
@tuna- gotta put a TV in the bathroom. So worth it
March 28th, 2008 at 11:11 AM
Nick, are you really that wedded to stats?
If you ask 30 NBA GMs, right now, if they would rather have Chris Quinn or Ty Lawson for one game …
March 28th, 2008 at 11:14 AM
@J STyle–Fresno beat SFGiants? Was this an exhibition game? I’m guessing yes…and it was probably something the Giants weren’t taking too seriously, I would also guess.
@Bigtuna–I agree that some UNC players will be playing in the NBA, but I wouldn’t say “many” and that’s in a few years. Not now. They’d get killed by Miami.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:14 AM
There’s a reason why most NBA rookies suck balls. They aren’t ready for the league. Their bodies and skillsets need a couple of years.
So unless a college team has 7 or 8 Grant Hill’s or Tim Duncan’s, they’re gonna get lit up by NBA teams.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:18 AM
I still think Lawson is better now than Quinn will ever be. Plus Lawson doesn’t look like an elf.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:18 AM
+1 clown
March 28th, 2008 at 11:19 AM
Hansbrough > Kobe
March 28th, 2008 at 11:20 AM
Any Team in the Big East > UNC….St. John’s > Heat
March 28th, 2008 at 11:20 AM
I think the arguement is that a combo of Kasib Powell (82 career nba minutes 34 last night), Blake Ahearn (70 total career nba minues, 30 last night), Stephame Lasme (108 career minutes 23 last night) is not really an NBA team
March 28th, 2008 at 11:20 AM
The Heat lineup is pretty bad, but check out this Chicago Bulls roster from ‘99. Van Horn drops 28 on them, for God sakes!
March 28th, 2008 at 11:21 AM
Hansbrough > Than any other person who ever played basketball in the history of Ever
March 28th, 2008 at 11:22 AM
Tiger Woods > Tiger Gatorade
March 28th, 2008 at 11:23 AM
Can anyone look up who these Bulls guys are?
I’m assuming Keith Booth from Maryland is one of them … I don’t really know the other 4 dudes.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:24 AM
Tiger Gatorade is pure garbage
March 28th, 2008 at 11:25 AM
Thats Rusty LaRue from Wake
March 28th, 2008 at 11:25 AM
TBL – I know Corey Benjamin and Mark Bryant.
Thats about it
March 28th, 2008 at 11:25 AM
Corey Benjamin, Rusty LaRue, Dikie Simpkins and Wennington are all I can come up with.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:26 AM
randy brown, ron harper the stuttering king, Bill wennington
March 28th, 2008 at 11:27 AM
Probably Calvin Booth, right?
March 28th, 2008 at 11:27 AM
Benjamin – Oregon State. Bryant – Seton Hall
March 28th, 2008 at 11:27 AM
Bill Wennington has more NBA rings than any other Canadian.
/possibly not true
March 28th, 2008 at 11:28 AM
I just took a dump that could beat the Heat in a best of five series.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:28 AM
Dickie Simpkins dropping 11 and 6…thats the Big East at its best!
March 28th, 2008 at 11:28 AM
@atlanta – Was it an exhibition game? Yes. It obviously does not count in the standings. Was Zito their opening day starter pitching? Yes. Are they one of the worst teams in MLB and the fact that they lost to their Triple AAA team in an exhibition was a correlation to this thread?
March 28th, 2008 at 11:31 AM
TBL, you honestly think Ginyard is a 2nd rounder??? I’ve been on the fence about him. He’s fantastic guarding and defending, but at what point does a guard have to score in the league. I think Eric Snow with offense for him. although Snow has made strides in the last couple of years.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:31 AM
J style did you really answer if it was an exhibition game? What were the choices mlb game, college game or olympic game
March 28th, 2008 at 11:34 AM
I think I speak for all of Cleveland…
Fuck the Heck??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
March 28th, 2008 at 11:35 AM
If Jordan needs a kidney tomorrow Bill Wennington better step up first. Dude had a grey beard in the NBA.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:35 AM
Is the voting closed for yestrday’s culture bracket matchup’s? Did Simmons really take down Howard? I hope irish doesn’t throw his monitor out the window.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:40 AM
When he was with Philly they would just let him shoot 15 footers all day and not guard him. then he got up to 12 per game, but I see he has digressed severly. my bad. Point is though, how many teams have all defense no offense guards that play significant minutes. That’s a legit question. I don’t watch much nba.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:40 AM
Haha BIG UPS Charles Barkley… I’ve been waiting for sooo long for someone prominent to grow some balls and call Skip Bayless a loser.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:47 AM
TBL, you honestly think Ginyard is a 2nd rounder??? I’ve been on the fence about him. He’s fantastic guarding and defending, but at what point does a guard have to score in the league. I think Eric Snow with offense for him. although Snow has made strides in the last couple of years.
Balkman was a first-round pick and doesn’t play any offense. There are plenty of guys who have made a career out of defense. See Bowen, Bruce.
Someone will take a chance on Ginyard in the 50s.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:53 AM
Bobby Jones went 1st round two years ago to the 76ers and I’m fairly certain he’s only there for defense… oh wait he just got CUT by the HEAT! That’s why you don’t draft guys with no skill offensively.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:55 AM
I take that back he went 2nd round I think
March 28th, 2008 at 11:55 AM
@outofbounds-that’s hilarious. Theres always italy, or scandanavia for those guys. Gotta love Ginyard though.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:56 AM
either way, he went.
March 28th, 2008 at 12:00 PM
Yeah he went… I was out on “the Ave” the other night, which is what they call the big stretch of bars that all the U of Washington students go to. Guess who was there? Bobby Jones. I asked him why he wasn’t at practice or something and he said he was injured and had to take a few weeks off. Bobby Jones, ruling the college sluts once again!
March 28th, 2008 at 12:05 PM
J Style – What’s the Van Exel/Cuban story? Never heard it but curious as Van Exel is one of my favorites and he was Dallas’ best player his last year there in the playoffs. Then he was gone.
March 28th, 2008 at 12:06 PM
@TBL: The fact that Balkman was a 1st rounder means nothing. Everyone, everyone was stunned that he was picked before the 2nd round. Wasn’t he a projected 50th pick or something? And how has that panned out for Isiah? He contributes very little on the 2nd worst team in the league.
March 28th, 2008 at 12:09 PM
Balkman is a gangsta though… I mean the dude is exciting to watch. Whenever you have an athlete like that you can always take a chance on him in the late first round I guess.
March 28th, 2008 at 12:09 PM
I’m still shocked Balkman was drafted at all, much less in the first round. He was hilariously average in the SEC his entire career. It just came out of nowhere that that dude got drafted in the first round.
March 28th, 2008 at 12:11 PM
Well look at Tyrus Thomas! He had an amazing tournament, had very basic offensive skills, and he went top 5
March 28th, 2008 at 12:16 PM
Tyrus Thomas is like a combine guy in the NFL to me. I heard someone on the radio the other day (might have been Chris Mortensen) that had a very wise take on this stuff. He said something to the effect of: Why would I put more weight on what a guy does in a 2-hour workout with no defenders around him than what a guy does over a 3-4 year college career?
That’s what bucket I put Tyrus Thomas in. I saw both of their games at the Georgia Dome in that year’s NCAA tourney, and a friend actually said “Hey, look, it’s Larry Brown!” referencing the Cowboys cornerback who had ONE good game, the Super Bowl, and turned it into a gi-normous contract with the Raiders…and then sucked…as he had before the super bowl.
March 28th, 2008 at 12:45 PM
Good point. I won’t deny that Tyrus Thomas is a freakish athlete… but there are plenty of great athletes that aren’t even in the league. Which is why it was so dumb to trade Thomas for Aldridge. You already knew Aldridge had the goods to score buckets in the league.
March 28th, 2008 at 1:51 PM
I think Miami wins the award for biggest tank.
Karma is a bitch tho.
