Final Four Fun: Russell Robinson vs. Ty Lawson
College Basketball April 3rd. 2008, 5:34pm
Russell Robinson of Kansas, in our estimation, is the best defensive guard in college hoops. We thought this back in December, when he forced USC’s OJ Mayo into a 6-for-21 afternoon. Robinson locked up Scottie Reynolds of Villanova (4-for-13) in the regional semifinal, and then did an admirable job against Stephen Curry of Davidson (9-for-25, his worst shooting performance since February) in the regional final. And if you watched that game, you know that Bill Self swapped slow-footed Brandon Rush onto Curry at times, so we’d have to check the tape and find out just how few Curry had on Robinson.
Which leads us to our Final Four question of the day: Can Russell Robinson stop the most vital cog in the powerful UNC offense, Ty Lawson?
Our favorite part of this year’s Final Four are the individual matchups, because there are so many future pros going against each other. We already talked about Dorsey vs. Love, and there are a few more in Memphis/UCLA we’ll get to tomorrow. But in UNC-Kansas, Robinson vs. Lawson will be our favorite to watch. Not far behind that – Lionel (ED. – where’d that come from?) Mario Chalmers vs. Wayne Ellington, Danny Green vs. Brandon Rush, and the tandem of Kaun and Arthur vs. Tyler Hansbrough. Arthur’s NBA stock hasn’t improved in the last three games, and he appears foul-prone; Kaun was brilliant against Davidson and could have the same impact that Aron Baynes did against Hansbrough in the first half of Washington State’s Sweet 16 game.
Two last notes on this one, for the stat geeks – two weeks ago, this game would have been a pick’em, but now the Heels are favored by three and everyone likes the Heels, which means a contrarian play is the way to go. (Unless, of course, you tried your hand at those last Thursday-Sunday and lost your shirt, like uh … some people.)

Russel will slow him. Stop? Nah. Lawson is too good.
Arthur’s draft status has got to be equal or worse than it was at this time last year. Too many fouls. Looks confused/disinterested too often. When he is on, he is awesome. I’m afraid Tyler will get him 2 quick fouls early and then he’ll be a non-factor.
Kaun’s legend at KU grows each game. Not a world beater, but knows his job and does it well.

Lionel Chalmers? Think you might mean Mario.

If KU plays as timid and slow-footed as they did against Davidson, UNC will run them out of the building.
But I think KU comes to play and makes this one the best game of the season!

If Kansas wins, I win the office pool. If North Carolina wins, it will go to one of two other guys, depending on who comes out of the other game. Consequently, go Robinson! Go Kansas!
I’m out, and not in the office tomorrow. See you kids on Monday, or possibly this weekend while drunk.

If Kansas wins the tourney I lose to my wife. If UCLA advances further than Kansas I win…
So umm, go Heels

Only on offense did KU come out tight. On defense they played about as well as you can against a hot team. They outrebounded Davidson by a good margin, and played them tough the whole game. KU can score and defend. Can UNC say that? KU can score 100 points (look at the Baylor game), shot the hell out of the ball (look at the UT game during the Big 12 championship), and KU can defend the hell out of the ball (look at the Davidson game and the Nova game). Put KU as the underdog, that’s fine. UNC better hope they don’t get run out of the building.

No need to compare the Davidson game to UNC. KU/Self were obviously nervous and tight. Shots weren’t falling early and oh no, losing to a double digit seed again got in their heads. They are over the hump.
I’m not saying they are going to win. I’m just saying they won’t be intimidated by UNC. If anything, it really sounds like Roy is cracking under the pressure. He’s always had a fragile emotional side, but this article is amazing. A Knight or Huggins, Roy is not.

UNC is talented but I just have a hard time believing that a Roy Williams “coached” team can win a close game. Just watching the Georgetown-UNC game last season when UNC bricked jumper after jumper while Roy stood on the sideline with a befuddled look on his face. I don’t think this team is quite as talented as his 2005 team.

I’d love to read the guy who did. That 05 was loaded. One of the three best UNC teams in the last 25 years, almost certainly. This year’s team? Top 10, but I don’t know about Top 5.

well, I watched ever single Carolina game in ‘05 in person, and have watched a few this year in person, most on tv.
I think this year’s team has more talent. The ‘05 team was super talented too, but people were saying the same things about their defensive ability back then too. Then a Roy team went out and held both MSU and UI to halves where they shot under 30%.
Ty > Ray – Ty’s faster and finishes better. Ray broke the press better, but turned the ball over way too much. Ty never turns it over almost. Ray was slightly better at threes.
Wayne = Rashad – While Rashad was more talented and better, its a push because Rashad was also recovering from they mysterious stomach illness during the Tourney in ‘05.
Marcus > Jackie M – Both great defenders, but Marcus can handle the ball and score.
Tyler = Sean M – Terrific college players. Too close to call
Deon/Alex = Jawad – Jawad was a great senior leader, but Deon and Alex have played really well, and Jawad could never finish down low or rebound.
07 bench = 05 bench – In ‘05, QT was a fresh. and we only had one real PG. He’s so much better now. Marvin, of course, was awesome. Danny Green is super valuable.
Slight edge to ‘07 in talent.

Raftery during NIT game tonight, “He couldn’t pay rent in Manhattan, but he owns the corners!” after a 3 from the corner.

Lawson will be controlled. It’s the 3rd and 4th options that will make the difference for UNC on Saturday. I have a $500 pool with friends riding on Kansas winning. One of only two reasons I’d ever root for Kansas. Reason two: If they were playing UNC. Talk about a perfect storm!
April 3rd, 2008 at 9:01 PM
Raftery is The Voice of the NIT.
A shame. I have to listen to Billy Packer say how much better UNC is because they play in the ACC. I’d rather have Raf or Gus show some actual emotion while calling one of the great events in sports. The Final 4.

Jay Bilas is writing you a polite yet strongly-worded email as we speak.

Jack -
Who are the guys in your avatar thing? DBT? It is small.
Also, how does one add a picture/logo? Damn blasted technology has me befuddled.
April 3rd, 2008 at 9:58 PM
KC – go to gravatar.com, it is relatively simple from there

@KC Resident:
Raftery is gonna be on the Westwood One Radio broadcast of the Final Four, along with John Thompson and some play-by-play dude named Kevin Kugler (instead of Kevin Harlan).
April 3rd, 2008 at 10:12 PM
Diesel – Many thanks.
Rick James – Many thanks as well. Although, radio tends to be about 2 seconds ahead of game action on the TV. I didn’t know Raftery did radio.

Of all the stories I’ve read, TBL is the first to bring up that this game USED to be thought of as a great matchup. Now, after KU “struggled” against a team that beat the #2 and #3 seed in the Midwest bracket, it is apparently no longer a great match-up. Apparently it is now KU vs. Roy. And I like Kansas in that matchup because Roy can’t hit his free throws (ala Memphis), and would be playing 1 – on – 5. And the worst part is that the media is portraying all of Lawrence, Kansas as Roy haters. And as a person who lives in Lawrence, that couldn’t be further from the truth. He still gets a lot of love here. Though I’ll admit, we are all scared shitless that the same coaching exodus may happen again. But those who know KU basketball know of a contingency plan.
Sorry for the long post but it’s 11pm CDT and nobody else will be posting.

@ KC Resident:
Why, it’s Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins, of course. Well, not really. It’s better explained here.

Keep Carolina from running the break and make them play in the half court. Obviously easier said than done, however. Lawson is very good at running the break, but is orindary in the half court.
