Voting on Bryant Gumbel’s Replacement
Media Gossip/Musings April 16th. 2008, 12:15pm
Last week, Bryant Gumbel resigned from the NFL Network. Reading between the lines, it seemed to be one of those, ‘we’re going to let you go, but to put a positive spin on it, you just resign’ deals. Now that we’ve got the NFL Network, we’re actually interested in who his replacement will be. (Aside: For the seven of you bitching about an NFL schedule post, bugger off. You will have forgotten your team’s schedule by July, anyway.) We’ve crammed a few of the talked-about options into a poll after the jump.

Screamin’ Stephen A. Smith.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:17 PM
Pam Ward being included in there is a joke right?
April 16th, 2008 at 12:19 PM

April 16th, 2008 at 12:19 PM
Ugh, could you imagine a Collinsworth/Screamin A booth?

You’re the only one for me, Ian Eagle.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:21 PM
This is why I hate the media. Who the frick “nominated” them and only them? And cbh49er is right about Pam Ward.
I haven’t been bugging you about a schedule post, TBL. But I just found out this morning that the Saints don’t have a “real” home game (not counting that bullshit London game) between October 12 and November 20. That deserves a post of its own, if not on your site, then another.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:21 PM
Why can’t we have both Screamin’ A. and Pam Ward? It would still be better than Gumbel. I’ll take Tom Hammond. Not because he’s so good but because I don’t have a reason to hate him yet. I have pretty low standards, just like my wife.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:21 PM
I like Hammond, except when is doing Notre Dame games
April 16th, 2008 at 12:22 PM
Am I the only one that’s a bit puzzled by ESPN’s fascination yesterday with the NFL schedule? They devoted a TWO HOUR SHOW to it yesterday afternoon, and then it dominated Sportscenter. As you said, TBL, everyone will forget about it soon enough…it just seemed a little odd to me. Especially with baseball just getting in full force and the NBA playoffs on the horizon.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:22 PM
Why can’t we get Gus Johnson and Screamin’ A.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:24 PM
Why was the schedule a big deal…we already knew what teams were playing who…just needed to know when. But, when your team sucks, when doesn’t really matter.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:24 PM
Is Pam Summerall Pat’s evil twin?
April 16th, 2008 at 12:25 PM
This should have been a tournament…
April 16th, 2008 at 12:26 PM
Arkbadger, beg your pardon?
April 16th, 2008 at 12:27 PM
calling out TBL on the typo…

April 16th, 2008 at 12:27 PM
You didn’t hear about his sex change?
April 16th, 2008 at 12:28 PM
i was going to say id like to have a scotch drinking contest with Pat Summerall, but it’d be futile. i wouldnt stand a chance.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:29 PM
Am I the only one that’s a bit puzzled by ESPN’s fascination yesterday with the NFL schedule?
They did it last year too. It should come as no surprise. That’s the media’s attitude. The NFL is more popular than any other sport. So any miniscule morsel of news, no matter how insignificant, about the NFL is by definition more newsworthy than anything that happens in any other sport.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:29 PM
I think we can all agree that we hope the NFL is not sitting around right now thinking…hmmm…whats Salisbury doing now?
April 16th, 2008 at 12:30 PM
Yes, but what about Pam?
April 16th, 2008 at 12:32 PM
Is it just me, or does TBL really like doing these polls?
April 16th, 2008 at 12:32 PM
I only thank my lucky stars that they didn’t put Gus on the list.
/the only person in the blogosphere, apparently, who really dislikes Gus Johnson
April 16th, 2008 at 12:33 PM
/thinking the same thing …
April 16th, 2008 at 12:34 PM
It’s not that we like him so much as he actually makes you feel like you are sitting next to him with his insane screaming when he’s really into his game.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:35 PM
First off…What the hell else is ESPN going to do on a Tuesday afternoon in April..they pay these guys a ton..fuck it..have them do something…second of all..I hung my schedule up in my office..have already done the Win Loss game with friends and myself and will analyze the shit out of this thing…I have since the matchups came out…on a completely different note..I am bat shit crazy
April 16th, 2008 at 12:36 PM
Jay..not a big Gus guy either..never got the fascination
April 16th, 2008 at 12:37 PM
No post on Providence getting the National Coach of the Year?
April 16th, 2008 at 12:38 PM
I would rather ESPN pay to show em’ shining strahan’s ring than spend two hours on the schedule. Being a Chiefs fan, the schedule has very little importance, except to maybe wipe my ass with.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:38 PM
What is Providence?
April 16th, 2008 at 12:40 PM
Arkbadger, I didn’t really need to beg your pardon.
That was Summeralls favorite thing to say his last few years of calling games.
“The Cowboys receive, beg your pardon, the Cardinals receive”
April 16th, 2008 at 12:40 PM
I would buy the DVD if ESPN does that.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:40 PM
It’s not that we like him so much as he actually makes you feel like you are sitting next to him with his insane screaming when he’s really into his game.
I get it, but tone it down a little. My thing has always has been this: Stop screaming about a 12 foot jumper that cut the lead to 17 like it was a Michael Jordan jumper to win the national championship.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:41 PM
should have mentioned, I watch his games on mute.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:43 PM
BTW, my vote was a toss-up between don’t get the network and someone else. To clarify something earlier, my frustration is not with the TBL poll, but with the fact that somebody nominated Pam Ward instead of a competent announcer. BTW, it’s not sexist. You could say the same for Summerall these days (and you have).
April 16th, 2008 at 12:47 PM
cbh49er, well then I do beg your pardon sir.

Dude, ESPN is a sports channel. Why would you have a problem with them breaking down games and predicting games that “stand out”? That is what they are supposed to do isn’t it?
Maybe I am just an nfl honk but I dig nfl schedule day…
April 16th, 2008 at 12:48 PM
fixed*
April 16th, 2008 at 12:52 PM
Of course it’s news, but it’s not this big a story. This is the problem with letting opinion polls and focus groups determine what is newsworthy. I don’t give a shit that more people care about Britney Spears than the election. That doesn’t mean that she deserves equal billing. Sometimes you have to draw a line in the sand.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:52 PM
yysa +1
April 16th, 2008 at 12:58 PM
So what was the big story that deserved 2hrs of coverage yesterday?
April 16th, 2008 at 12:59 PM
Is it just me, or does TBL really like doing these polls?
That’s what she said.
April 16th, 2008 at 1:00 PM
Brent Musberger or Gus Johnson aka “He’s running to daylight!” and “Holy Mackrel!”
April 16th, 2008 at 1:02 PM
gonzo that was lame. keep trying to get that gold star
April 16th, 2008 at 1:04 PM
irish off the meds > irish on the meds
April 16th, 2008 at 1:11 PM
Why is who is better McShay or Kiper a banner link?
April 16th, 2008 at 1:12 PM
TBL had a bug up his behind about McShay yesterday.
April 16th, 2008 at 1:16 PM
No Gus Johnson……Seriously? No Gus Johnson? This poll is another thing fit to use after a date with the john.
Come on TBL…….It’s Gus Johnson or nothing for the NFLN!!! Simple.
The NFLN wants to present their games in an exciting engaged bigger than life manner, who better than Gus Johnson to do that?!!!
April 16th, 2008 at 1:37 PM
some mental patient of a columnist in kansas city actually wrote a column suggesting ward. either is was a piss poor attempt at satire or the guy needs to be drug tested.
hey whitlock, slap the guy for all the sane people of the western hemisphere, ‘k?
April 16th, 2008 at 2:12 PM
Gotta say … since my main man Derrick at Roto Nation taught me how to do the polls for the Culture Bracket, I’m hooked.
April 16th, 2008 at 3:15 PM
If NFL-N hired Hammond or Eagle, I’d be more than happy. Eagle is especially an underrated TV broadcaster.
