NBA Playoff Predictions: Eastern Conference
NBA April 17th. 2008, 6:00pm
Does anyone really care about the Eastern Conference? How did it get this bad? What happened to the East Coast Bias? Personally, I blame Isiah Thomas. It’s one thing to destroy a storied franchise to the ground, but an entire conference? Then again the is the guy who sunk the CBA.
That being said, the Eastern Conference Playoffs are again being held this year. Sure every media member (non-team-centric bloggers included, I’m guessing) thinks that the Champ emerging from the West is a foregone conclusion, but they’re still going to play the games. After the jump, my humble and most likely incorrect selections for the Eastern Conference Playoffs. Feel free to put your own picks in the comments. If anyone gets everything right I’m sure there will be an “Atta-boy!” in it for you.
And yeah…that’s Leon Powe.(!) Sure, every other blog is probably using a picture of him to go with their previews, but we decided to run with him anyway.
First Round:
No. 1 BOSTON CELTICS vs. No. 8. ATLANTA HAWKS
This is an easy one – the Celtics! In…5. Why 5? Because my undying admiration for both Briana and Acie Law IV (for different reasons) won’t allow me to predict a Boston sweep. Sure Law only played 15 minutes a game this season, but I still think he’s pretty nifty. The Hawks can win a game, right? Right?
Celtics in 5
No. 4 CLEVELAND CAVALIERS vs. No. 5 WASHINGTON WIZARDS
This is the match up everyone wanted. Everyone except for the NBA because the Wizards are a much better team and the NBA wants needs LeBron to get out of the first round. Why? Because they think we’re all in love with LeBron. Anyone who has seen a Ballin’ post knows that’s simply not the case. Most of us want to see good games and more often than not this Cavaliers team is going to make for ugly basketball. Don’t screw the Wizards just because LeBron is the face of the NBA. Pretty please?
Wizards in 6
No. 3 ORLANDO MAGIC vs. No. 6 TORONTO RAPTORS
A commenter once said that Dwight Howard is pretty much the greatest thing since sliced bread. That combined with late-season struggles by the Raptors make me very weary of Toronto’s chances here. So weary in fact that I see Orlando winning this one easily.
Magic in 5
No. 2. DETROIT PISTONS vs. No. 7 PHILADELPHIA 76ERS
The award for First Round Series I Don’t Want To Watch goes to…. Detroit – Philadelphia! To tell you the truth, I just can’t see the ‘6ers stealing a game.
Pistons in 4
Second Round:
Aside from some low-scoring affairs in the first round, I think the Eastern Conference Playoffs are going to be just as entertaining as the West. The one problem will be the lack of marketability: No LeBron. We poor fans will be left with nobodies like Kevin Garnett, Gilbert Arenas, Rasheed Wallace, Dwight Howard, Paul Pierce, Caron Bulter…*sigh* Why even bother watching?
No. 1 BOSTON CELTICS vs. No. 5 WASHINGTON WIZARDS
This could be an all-time great series. I see Washington high off the fumes of beating LeBron James pushing Boston to the brink. At that point Kevin Garnett is likely to have a 40-point, 20-rebound game 7, right? I can dream. Washington should be able to take a couple games before giving in to the Celtics will.
Celtics in 6
No. 2. DETROIT PISTONS vs. No. 3 ORLANDO MAGIC
Feel good Magic fans – you made it out of the first round! Unfortuantely the Pistons are destined to play in the Eastern Conference finals every year from now until forever. Will they ever win another championship? No chance in Hell, but they’ll keep trying.
Pistons in 6
Conference Finals:
The idea of ‘Sheed and KG battling in this series has Bill Simmons wet and it should have you pumped up too. Its the match up of the teams that’s been there before with 3 Super Stars (Garnett, Paul Pierce and Tony Ray Allen) who have never been.
No. 1 BOSTON CELTICS vs. No. 2. DETROIT PISTONS
How weak is it to pick the top two seeds to advance to the conference finals? Very. Luckily, this is the same year where 4 # 1 seeds made the Final Four. High seeds are in this season. Of course that means that Boston area sports fans will get treated to yet another championship contender. Rats.
Celtics in 7
Tomorrow: The Western Conference Playoffs Preview and the Champion is revealed! (Its not Golden State)

You got it almost exactly the way I see it, but I think the LeBrons beat the Wiz in 7, and no way does ATL win a game. But yes Celtics in Finals
April 17th, 2008 at 6:06 PM
Wizards over the Cavs? I agree the Wizards are the most FUN team to watch in the Eastern conference, but I disagree sir.
April 17th, 2008 at 6:10 PM
Who would that be?
April 17th, 2008 at 6:10 PM
Celtics. It’s not even a question who comes out of there. But I could see the Wiz causing some trouble.
I have an epic hangover. Shots of 151 before 50cent draughts are the worst call ever. That’s my disclaimer for when the Wiz get slaughtered by LeBron.
Mel Kiper’s hair just made Todd McShay his bitch. And thank you Steve McNair.
April 17th, 2008 at 6:12 PM
I mixed 151 and beer one night, key ONE NIGHT, I will never do that again
April 17th, 2008 at 6:16 PM
Sure every media member (non-team-centric bloggers included, I’m guessing) thinks that the Champ emerging from the West is a foregone conclusion, but they’re still going to play the games.
Mike, that’s what Cuz wrote. The media is picking the west. Cuz, you ARE the media now. Sure, you don’t go to games or get the free buffet. But you are the media as far as I’m concerned. Maybe you can get a PBAWA membership so you can be certifiably qualified as media?
April 17th, 2008 at 6:20 PM
CRM is pining for that NAMBLA membership.
April 17th, 2008 at 6:20 PM
Oh. It is written funny.
Either way, Vegas has BOS as the favorite and DET as the third best:
BOSTON +163
LOS ANGELES +400
DETROIT +614
SAN ANTONIO +809
PHOENIX +900
April 17th, 2008 at 6:23 PM
Dear God I want to bury my head in Briana’s chest
April 17th, 2008 at 6:24 PM
Hey CRM, back of the line for the NAMBLA membership. Wait a minute, what do you suppose that…oh dear God. CRM, the applicaiton form is all yours.
April 17th, 2008 at 6:25 PM
Hey, did the winner of the bracket pool ever receive their prize since the number of entries exceeded 300?
April 17th, 2008 at 6:28 PM
If by prize you mean screwed over, then yes. Yes they did.
April 17th, 2008 at 6:32 PM
Does anyone know who the winner was? If a commenter that nobody has ever heard of wins, don’t we all lose?
April 17th, 2008 at 6:34 PM
It was “Client #78″ by C. Rammel
No idea who that is.
April 17th, 2008 at 6:36 PM
Pistons will beat the Celtics.
Keep saying that the EC champ has no shot….just keep saying it. 2004 Pistons and 2006 Heat are still laughing about similar sentiments those years.
April 17th, 2008 at 6:41 PM

April 17th, 2008 at 6:42 PM
Sorry this is completely off topic, but John Clayton just said that Jason Taylor has “gained weight” from being on Dancing with the Stars and has gone from a svelte 240 to 242.
Are you kidding me? That’s a normal meal for an athlete of his size. Is this really newsworthy? Is Disney that desperate to cross-promote their shows?
April 17th, 2008 at 6:42 PM
Oh, also go Green!
April 17th, 2008 at 6:43 PM
If you really want to pick an upset, it’s gotta be Toronto over Orlando. Gutsy call Nick.
April 17th, 2008 at 6:50 PM
I put one month’s time of commenting on that bet!
April 17th, 2008 at 6:52 PM
Boston, Orlando, Detroit sweep, LeBron in 6. LeBron over Celtics in 7, Detroit over Orlando in 5. Detroit over LeBron in 6.
April 17th, 2008 at 6:53 PM
mike…that was quite ballsy i must say.
April 17th, 2008 at 6:58 PM
Off the record, I think Boston is winning the title. I haven’t doubted them all season, why now? I just don’t know who is coming out of the West, and it would be insane to pretend to know. Tim Duncan has had a ton off off nights this season, and I can see him getting outplayed. The Lakers defense is not something I’d be willing to put money on. The Hornets are inexperienced, Dallas dangerous, but they’re Dallas, The Suns are extremely intriguing to me right now.
April 17th, 2008 at 7:00 PM
New Lost is nextweek right? Why do they do this. They run Lost during the NCAA tournament, but now with the NBA off this week, we get nothing. Jack was a Red Sox fan, just not an NBA fan I guess.
April 17th, 2008 at 7:05 PM
I predict Orlando will sweep the playoffs and then go on to win gold in Beijing.

And yes, the Magic over Pistons pick was just to be different.
April 17th, 2008 at 9:10 PM
I liked Orlando when they had Shaq, Penny and Terry Catledge. Yes you remember him. Dennis Scott too.
April 17th, 2008 at 9:12 PM
gonzo, that team was sweet. don’t forget nick anderson.
April 17th, 2008 at 9:24 PM
Betting one month of commenting is as ballsy as you can be. Yikes.
April 17th, 2008 at 9:29 PM
TBL, I want to see a follow up post tomorrow on David Ortiz’s “buried jersey” being donated by the Yankees to the Jimmy Fund to auction off for cancer research. The current bid is at $30K.
April 17th, 2008 at 9:33 PM
Boston over Atl in 4
Det over Philly in 5
Cle over Wash in 6
Orl over Tor in 6
Bos over Cle in 5
Det over Orl in 6
Bos over Det in 6
SA over Bos in 7
April 17th, 2008 at 10:40 PM
Can’t we just pretend the East doesn’t exist? Seriously, it’s that bad…almost unwatchable. Let’s just call it Boston in the Finals against someone from the west, and when you do a western conference post we’ll hash it out. GO MAGIC!
April 17th, 2008 at 10:49 PM
Rooting for the Celtics and Lakers hard as I have bets in on them both to win the title at very high odds. Put them in minutes after they each made their big trades.
FYI…betus.com isn’t the brightest when it comes to this and sometimes has “future odds” that are WAY F—-ED up…i.e. easy $$$$
April 17th, 2008 at 11:07 PM
Please allow the buried jersey story to die. Please, God.
April 17th, 2008 at 11:12 PM
can’t wait for the Tejada interview on ESPN. He walked out after being confronted about his real age. turn on ESPN if you’re out there.
April 17th, 2008 at 11:15 PM
It’s hilariously awkward. Gotta love how he says it’s “private.” It’s you’re fucking age, and it was how teams decided how much to pay you and for how long. We’re not asking for what kind of medications you’re on. Jesus.
April 17th, 2008 at 11:20 PM
ESPN is a racist piece of shit. That was awful.
April 17th, 2008 at 11:25 PM
@Gonzo- Just saw a clip of Tejada, does it matter if he’s 33 or 35? Who gives a shit. Yeah, it’s a story, but I could care fucking less. Why pick a fight with him, I’d much rather hear about Ortiz’ jersey. Just kidding, I have nothing against Tejada, and can’t stand the whole buried uniform story.
Huge Magic fan here. Looks good for them in the first round at least, but my fandom just won’t let me pick against them. Here are my official predications.
Beantown over The Atl in 4
Detroit Rock City over Illadelphia in 5
Cleveland Rocks over Wizanators in 7
O-Rock over the Raptors in 6
Beantown over Cleveland in 6
O-Rock over Detroit in 7
O-Rock over Beantown in 7
O-Rock over Phoenix in 7
April 17th, 2008 at 11:28 PM
Wow, at least you gave the disclaimer that you’re a homer. So it’s allowable.
April 17th, 2008 at 11:33 PM
I forgot to say I wish Shaq never left Orlando.
April 17th, 2008 at 11:37 PM
@ Tribal:
Good Lord. Wikipedia already has this whole thing updated. Such a shame. Even if he did lie about his age, who cares anymore.

No way Celtics-Pistons goes seven. Celtics in six. I think LeBron wins (not Cleveland) against Washington. To prove my point, let me ask a question? Has Gilbert EVER delivered on one of his smack-talking promises? I think he’s too self-conscious to be clutch in the big spotlight.
April 17th, 2008 at 11:49 PM
Plus, I’ll be down in Orlando all summer, so I’d like to see as many NBA Playoff games as possible.
April 18th, 2008 at 12:04 AM
Has Gilbert EVER delivered on one of his smack-talking promises?
I’m glad you asked that. Of course the answer is no. But I sure am rooting for them.
April 18th, 2008 at 12:43 AM
The Wiz just have to hope they didn’t piss LeBron off. My God that never works out well for the oppenent.
April 18th, 2008 at 8:43 AM
been waiting all week for this post and it comes on a thursday night WTF
April 18th, 2008 at 10:06 AM
I’m rooting for the Wiz just so I dont have to see anymore “We are Witnesses” commercials.
