Top Shelf: Staying Alive
NHL April 20th. 2008, 12:17pm
Colorado 2, Minnesota 1: Joe Sacik fed Ben Guite for a shorthanded goal and Ryan Smyth got the series-winner in the second. Unlike a few previous games this series, Avs goalie Jose Theodore didn’t give up a multi-goal third period — he didn’t give up a goal in the third period — and stopped 33 shots for the victory. The Big Sidebar thinks Peter Forsberg has been a bargain. The Wild have lost six of their last seven road playoff games. Colorado wins series.
Boston 5, Montreal 4: Can the Bruins pull off the upset? Once trailing the series 3-1, the Bruins have won two in a row to force a series-deciding seventh game. Twenty times in franchise history the Bruins trailed a playoff series 3-1 and 20 times they have lost the same playoff series. A strong third period did the trick for the Bruins as they scored four goals including Marco Sturm’s game-winner late. Marc Savard is so excited he can’t sleep. The seventh game will be the first time the Habs have played a seventh game after leading a series 3-1. Series tied at 3-3.
Washington 3, Philadelphia 2: The Caps live to fight another day. Jumping out to a 2-1 lead in the second on Sergei Fedorov’s first goal of the series, the Caps hung on. Cristobal Huet had 30 saves. The Flyers Mike Knuble, who was having such a great playoffs, tore a hamstring and is out for the series. Philadelphia leads series 3-2.
