Vikings Land Party Animal/Pass Rusher
NFL April 23rd. 2008, 12:35pm
If anyone’s capable of bringing back the Love Boat to Minnesota, it’s got to be Jared Allen, right? Which is why it was such a brilliant move for the Vikings to trade for one of the best defensive ends in football last night. Allen, owner of two DUIs, a penchant for partying, and a league-leading 15 1/2 sacks last season, gives Minnesota perhaps the best defensive line in football – they already led the league in rushing defense last season – and basically leaves the Vikings a quarterback and a wide receiver away from doing some serious damage in the NFC. Even if they overpaid for the guy, the Vikings are built to win now, and Allen’s much more likely to help that cause than three rookies might have.
(And to think – less than a year ago, we called them the worst team in the NFL! If we had to guess the Super Bowl favorites from the NFC based on odds, it might go Dallas, New York Giants, Minnesota.)
The Chiefs? One. Hot. Mess. How long until Whitlock unloads on these guys?

Any chance Hard Knocks will feature the Vikings this year? I so love that show…
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Rex Grossman will be having nightmares tonight
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Only a QB and WR away, huh? It’s all so simple!
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Heh. My thoughts exactly.
Allen is a great player, but a 1st and two 3rds, plus the $60 million dollar deal?
Good haul for the Chiefs, I guess.
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:41 pm
You really want RomanWarHelmet to post from his vacation in the Islands. I will step up for him, the Giants disagree.
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:42 pm
I thought the Vikings problem was pass defense?
I mean I guess in theory this guy will help their pass defense avoid getting exposed but I don’t know, I just feel like they will continue to be a run stopping but get passed on team.
I don’t get why the Redskins didn’t try trading for him. I think he would be much more valuable to the Redskins than Chad Johnson.
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:43 pm
As a Bronco fan I’m happy to not have to see Allen twice a year anymore. The guy is a Beast, even after 17 jaeger bombs and 6 Schlitz’s
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:43 pm
The vikings have a quarterback already
/ Tarvaris Jackson
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:44 pm
best defensive line huh tbl…they have nothing on a certain team…that i can’t think of right now…oh yeah…now i remember…they are the super bowl world champion new york football giants…i wont take the vikings seriously…at all…unless they sign strahan and eli manning…lol…not happening

Change the Vikings need to a “serviceable” QB. Tavaris doesn’t fit that sentence.
Where did his neck go? That is a beast of a dude. Minnesota definitely upgraded, but it took a lot of salary room to do so. The Viking Front 4 is close to Fearsome 4-some caliber.
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:46 pm
cbh…their problem was pass defense, so they addressed it. CB’s are overvalued especially in the cover 2 scheme Minny plays. but, making allen the highest paid defensive lineman in NFL history? yeesh.
KC stole from Minny in this deal. youd like to think that you could get 12 sacks from a combo of current (former 1st rounders) DE’s on the roster and whomever you could pick up with those picks and NOT have to pay $31 mil.
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:47 pm
clown…great impression.
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:49 pm
So the Chiefs have the No. 5 & 17 picks.
Aren’t there a few KC fans on this board? Who are they gonna draft?
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:49 pm
I am a little excited about this one. The Vikings were awful at rushing the QB last year and this only helps them. They lost 3 DP, but they were going to have to try and draft a DE but at 17, that would have meant they would have gotten the 4-5 best one in the draft.
They did get some help in FA at Safety and LB, so I think this move will at least get them in the playoffs next year. I am not expecting SB or anything, but at least they can compete.
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:49 pm
I feel bad for Tony Gonzalez.
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:50 pm
This type of trade with all these draft picks in exchange for a great player can do nothing but help the Vikings.
/ Herschell Walker

Nigro please – I’m with the NYG fans
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:51 pm
Where’s Whitlock?
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:51 pm
everything in football is controlled at the line of scrimmage. if i remember correctly, the giants were horribly dinged up in the secondary for their entire playoff run. it doesn’t take three pro bowlers in your secondary to cover an opponent for three seconds when your pass rush is that sick.
the vikings will win the next four NFC north titles. as a lions fan, this is a nightmare. good move for both teams, as they are both headed in opposite directions. let’s just hope herm doesn’t botch these picks.
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:52 pm
Tony Gonzalez should angle for another tryout with the Heat. This time he’d make the team for sure.
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:52 pm
This type of trade with all these draft picks in exchange for a great player can do nothing but help the Vikings.
/ Herschell Walker
In the Vikings defense, they actually got 6 guys when they traded for him.
/tateless multiple personality comment–I’ll reprimand myself now
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:53 pm
they do have the best D-line in the NFL. try running on Minny, not happenin, now theyll run up sacks because you cant double team 3 guys.
NYG are great, dont get me wrong, i just like Pat and Kevin Williams better than NYG’s DTs. and who knows what strahan is gonna do?
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:54 pm
they got the best offensive line and now the best defensive line. Lets just hope this guy doesnt hang out with Bryant McKinnie
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:54 pm
Don’t forget about a certain d-line in Foxboro: Seymour, Green, Wilfork, Warren.
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:54 pm
who cares who the QB is? Best O and D-Lines,
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Rumeal…Michigan fan too?
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:55 pm
How does this affect the Commenter Draft?
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:56 pm
the browns have the best O-line in football. and, with rex hadnot and lecharles bentley on the bench, they go 9 deep all with starting experience. Joe Thomas is the best OT in the NFL as a rookie…scary.
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:56 pm
TBL: They did pick up BB from FA, so couple that with getting rid of Troy Williamson, they upgraded their WR depth.
/just realized that T-Jack is still throwing it to them.
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:57 pm
Mike NYC…yea, youre right. Wilfork and Warren are 2 of the best in the NFL. SD has an awesome line too, Williams is scary, Olshanksy and Castillo are crazy good in a 3-4.
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:57 pm
As a Packer’s fan, all i can say is Aaron Rodgers has much better facial hair.
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:58 pm
@spencer- Minn o line is far more superior than Clevelands. i know you love the browns, but cmon. This whole board would probably agree with that, except of course you brownies
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:59 pm
yes, i’m a michigan fan. just read the news about justin boren. enjoy that little bitch. he won’t even start for tOSU.
joe thomas…man, imagine if they took quinn at #4 (or whatever it was). i was so pissed last year when the lions took calvin over thomas. fuck. nice franchise.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:01 pm
you guys are giving tarvaris no credit. he really isn’t that bad. i’d take him over rex grossman, the KC situation, the miami situation, etc. and i’d put him on par with jason campbell and vince “god” young. yea, i said it.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:02 pm
@ Mike NYC—-We have to believe there going after Ghoulston from Ohio State. Surely they will try to replace Allen….
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:03 pm
These guys had NE, NYG and CLE as the best 3 lines last year. Though measuring it by “stats” is of course problematic.
Rumeal, I’d still be pleased w/ Calvin. Think he goes for 1,200+ yds and about 10 scores this year.
http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ol.php
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:04 pm
irish…the right side of Minny’s line is straight garbage. far superior? ill give you steve hutchinson over steinbach.
but…
thomas >>> mckinney
fraley = birk
tucker >> whoever the RG is
schaefer >> whoever the RT is
browns depth – lennie friedman, seth mckinney, rex hadnot, lecharles bentley…our backups are a top 15 line in the NFL.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:05 pm
I agree with Irish and everyone about the Minny O-Line that they are the best. Chester Taylor has 2,000 total yards rushing the past 2 years. I mean, Chester Freakin Taylor.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:06 pm
Have you checked the rest of the division?
Packers lost Favre
Bears still hurting
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:06 pm
Rumeal…i consider myself cordial for a Bucks fan towards UM people, but id be worried about taking an ND dive this year. dont give up on calvin, he’s going to be sick, WR’s need a lil time to adjust.
and Boren proably wont start, he probably wont play…which is funny considering he was UM’s best OL this year.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:07 pm
i had calvin johnson on my fantasy team last year. Fucking bum with a capital B.
@spencer- McKinnie is the man
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:08 pm
TBL, you live-blogging the draft on Saturday?
Use that CoverItLive software and get all interactive and shit.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:08 pm
Gonzo…Jamal Lewis was the 5th leading rusher in the NFL last year after everyone called him clinically dead. i watch the O-lines pretty closely and McKinney might be the most overrated LT in the league (tho he is a solid player) but the right side of their line is truly horrendous, doesn’t that count?
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:09 pm
Hold the fucking phone. Favre retired?
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:09 pm
irish…i keep spelling his name wrong, my bad. he’s overrated. you just love him because he went to DA U.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:09 pm
There’s going to be a sweet update on the Commenter draft. We’ve been challenged! So now you guys are actually playing for something. Will be posting on it later.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:10 pm
F the Commenter NFL DRAFT
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:11 pm
@spencer- of course, but cmon dont call him overrated.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:17 pm
sorry irish, but it’s true. he’s a great talent, he’s just lazy and gets beat by guys who have no business beating him.
Joe Thomas (and yes, i have a massive mancrush on him) gives up 1 sack his entire rookie year (to Mario Williams) and has a 5.7 ypc average on plays run behind him…he’s the best.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:17 pm
justin boren was the best OL on michigan last year?!?!? i think jake long and his $51 million contract might have something to say about that. boren was a joke. which is why we rushed for 2 yards on any play that mattered. which is why vernon gholston bought real estate in michigan’s backfield last november.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Vikings fan–love the deal.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Rumeal…THIS year, long isn’t there anymore. Gholston beat Schilling like a rented mule, and he’s now your only OL with starting experience. have fun with that.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Aren’t there a few KC fans on this board? Who are they gonna draft?
Hopefully a couple lineman. KC is desperate on the O-line, but I think they’ll wait until the 10th pick to get Clady or Albert. They’re probably hoping they can trade out of the 5th pick (with a team that wants to grab McFadden, Ryan, or Ellis). But if they aren’t able to trade that pick, they’ll probably take a D lineman (maybe Ellis or Gholston).
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:21 pm
@spencer- since i know you love quotes from the U players
In the September 2006 issue of FHM magazine, McKinnie was one of five University of Miami alumni prominently featured in an article titled: “University of Miami Hit Squad: The Hurricanes are Taking Over the NFL. Deal with it.” In the article, McKinnie said: “If you put together a team made up of guys playing in the NFL who come from the University of Miami, we’d be playing in the Super Bowl this season. And I think we’d win.”
McKinnie is not overrated. The Browns are this year
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:23 pm
irish…yea, the U has a ton of awesome NFL players, but just cuz he went to Miami doesn’t mean he isn’t missing blocks or not finishing guys off that he should. and i think youre right, the browns will step back, but joe thomas is still the best LT in the NFL.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Fuck yeah! Keith Millard 2.0!
This is a great trade for the Vikings, because they were going to draft the best DE available at 17 anyway… and god knows they haven’t wasted enough draft picks on the defensive line the past 6 or 7 years.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:24 pm
irish…i was just thinkin about a team of all U players, imagine Lt. Winslow, Andre Johnson and Santana Moss as your primary WR’s…dayum. scary shit.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:25 pm
“How long until Whitlock unloads on these guys?” TBL
He’s been doing it for 15 years on pretty much a weekly basis or when warrented. Which is often.
–
Not a Chief’s fan, but KC made out like bandits on this one. Jared Allen is a one trick pony who can not stop the run. Granted, his one trick is excellent. He has cleaned up his partying ways supposedly (he just opened a bar in Kansas City. ?).
Vike fans – The guy is a quote machine. Enjoy.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Just so that we’re clear…football doesn’t start until September right? Awesome. Play ball!
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:27 pm
If the U fielded an NFL team would Vinny come BACK out of retirement?
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:27 pm
TBL -
Whitlock’s article from Saturday. He, like most Chiefs fans, have no problem with the trade. Well, until Peterson screws up another draft.

April 23rd, 2008 at 1:28 pm
Does anyone else think Minny will get burned by outsdie sweeps and screen passes. Allen will be 10 yards downfield and williams’s cannot move from end to end.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:28 pm
Yeah, but who would throw them the ball? Ken Dorsey?
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:29 pm
irish…i have faith in rodriguez and barwis. it’s not like they’re teaching these guys astrophysics. by name alone, michigan will have enough size and talent up there to be serviceable. and it’s still the freaking big ten. they’ll go 8-4, minimum.
the days of being able to predict 72% of lloyd’s play calls are over. hope you enjoyed your 4-year run there.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:30 pm
SM…not really. the williams’ cant pursue, but they bust up the middles of lines so quickly it wont matter. if the outside sweeps didn’t hurt them last year, why would it this year? plus EJ Henderson and Greenway are legit at OLB.
i think Brock Berlin would be QB.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Lets hope Vinny comes back this year. Maybe the Browns can use him again after Anderson gets benched after two games
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:31 pm
irish…we got Brady Quinn tho. you know, the guy who, for some reason, is on your TV every commercial break but hasn’t thrown more than 10 NFL passes?
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:32 pm
@rumeal- what happened
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Wouldn’t you prefer Santonio, A-Gonz, Jenkins, and Ginn?
/Ducks
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Oops — the Vikes’ pick is #17. Hmmmm, I think Clady and Albert are gone by then. I guess I have no idea what they’ll do. Then again, Carl Petersen has no idea either.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:36 pm
And… Brock Berlin as your quarterback? Ken Dorsey?
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Spencer, I love the Browns O-Line. Fraley was the tits with the Eagles, always the lead blocker for Westbrook on the screen. Send over some extra lineman this way.
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:48 pm
I would like to take a shit on all this talk about the Vikings having the best d-line in the NFL
/Osi Umenyiora
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:51 pm
Gonzo…we’ll give you Lennie Friedman, Seth McKinney and a 2009 2nd rounder for Lito Sheppard.
/virtual Phil Savage
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:55 pm
Teams with great front lines (both O and D) win games in the NFL. It’s nice to have Peyton or LT in the backfield, but the horses upfront win games. The Browns now have a dominant (and deep) offensive line. Anderson will have all day to throw the ball to Braylon, Lt Kellen, Joe J, and Stallworth deep… And the previously dead Jamal Lewis will have another steady year… Its finger crossing time that the new fellas on the D-line can have the same effect. I would say that the Browns are still a year away from being a beast in the AFC…
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:55 pm
Portis could be the U quarterback. He is a career 60% passer with all of his completions being for TDs and no INTs.
April 23rd, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Now the chief’s shitty ass owner and shitty ass GM and shitty ass coach have six picks in the top 100 to fuck up. This year is not looking good at all for my chiefs.
April 23rd, 2008 at 2:31 pm
Best DL in football?
Ummm that title currently resides in NY.
April 23rd, 2008 at 2:32 pm
you know it all dont ya
April 23rd, 2008 at 2:39 pm
@rumeal- what happened
i don’t know what you’re talking about. perhaps the pistons i guess. i’m not particularly concerned. the 76ers couldn’t make a jumper outside of 10 feet in the first half, then they went ape shit in the second half.
100% chance the pistons win tonight. and at this point, they’re almost better on the road. like most successful teams, the pistons don’t have many “true” fans at their home games anymore. the entire lower bowl is executives who don’t want to mess up their suits cheering too hard, and wannabe ballers who go there to be seen. it’s a joke.
the arena is 50 miles from downtown detroit and stuck in the middle of one of the five richest counties in america. therefore, the crowds there blow compared to the bad boy era. it’s like the basketball version of wrigley field.
April 23rd, 2008 at 2:40 pm
@rumeal- you said irish in #64. wake up
April 23rd, 2008 at 2:45 pm
The Chiefs are in a good position right now. There is a lot of cap room with a deep talent pool to fill their needs in the 2008 draft. They will most likely fill the Jared Allen hole with the #5 pick(c. long, ellis or gholston). I would say 17 is devoted to offense line no matter what. I think Clady or Albert will still be around by then. The best case scenario for the chiefs – New England wants to trade up to F- the Jets and they get another pick in this years draft.
*Side note for you guys. KC has 5 picks in the first 82 selections this year. The rest of the AFC West only has 4 picks of the first 82.
April 23rd, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Correction, Chiefs have 6 picks in the first 82
