Commenter Draft: We Lost, But It Was Close
2008 NFL Draft Bonanza April 28th. 2008, 8:55am
Our commenter draft competition against the newspaper beat writers who drafted for Sports Illustrated came down to the final pick of the first round. Amazingly, both sides had a total of 33 points after 30 picks, and the New York Giants draft pick was going to decide the victor.
Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News correctly nailed the Giants taking Miami safety Kenny Phillips, and SI topped TBL, 38-34. (Trades were not factored in. Too messy.) Be honored, commenters – you made it interesting. Would the following commenters stand at your desk and take a bow for nailing picks accurately: Mike NYC, YYSA, Bottomless Chips, and Blazers. A job well done.
Hope you feel like talking about the draft, because we’ll have plenty of draft-related posts today.

had i gone with McFadden like every other mock draft had, we woulda won.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:07 am
When I think mock drafts, I think losers.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:08 am
@Mike NYC- Game 5 tonight. If Orlando wins, you are gone. One month
April 28th, 2008 at 9:12 am
Nothing against Mike NYC – but can we really give him kudos for getting that pick correct? What’s next, is he going to predict tomorrow will be Tuesday?
April 28th, 2008 at 9:17 am
Liked the Steelers draft, they definitely needed a RB and WR and they got two good players. Their line wasn’t that bad and the running game disappeared when Willie wasn’t on the field.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:19 am
If the Jags hadn’t traded up to get Harvey, I think the Bengals would’ve taken him. That would have been five more points.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:23 am
coop…their line wasnt that bad? what line were you watching? faneca was the only guy on that line worth a shit and he’s gone and you gave max starks all his money. it doesnt matter who’s running back there, they’re gonna get crushed.
sweed was a great pick tho, and i dont wanna see him.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:27 am
If the line was that terrible than why did Ben and Willie both put up huge numbers last year. I’m not saying it’s the best its ever been, but I can find a fat ass in the late rounds, but I’m not passing on guys like Mendenhall and Sweed, not after watching Najeh poo the closet last year.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:28 am
The University of Miami has had at least one first-round pick in each of the last 14 NFL drafts.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:30 am
the draft was fun but was difficult because of players already being off the board. we should’ve been able to pick any players to make it exactly fair. i thought the Bucs would take Mike Jenkins or Alib Talib but they were both off the board, so i went WR. either way, it was fun and i’m glad it came down to the last pick.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:30 am
ben put up big numbers because he can move outside the pocket. willie put up big numbers because he got a ton of chances. and he couldn’t get the ball in the endzone.
the steelers needed a good interior lineman and they didnt get one and RB’s like mendenhall are a dime a dozen too.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:38 am
Yeah Willie only averaged 4.1 YPC. That’s very, very average.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:39 am
Much as I would have liked to have seen the Steelers get a bit more OL help (I was hoping the Steelers would trade up for Otah and snag the center from ND, John Sullivan), Tony Hills was an excellent value pick at #4. The Sporting News had him rated as the 7th best tackle in the draft, and he would have gone much sooner but for an injury last season.
The one pick that leaves me puzzled is Dennis Dixon. Not sure what the urgency is to draft a QB, and the early report I read was that they don’t plan on playing him at WR. Strange.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:41 am
My only problem with using the pick on Mendenhall was that they just brought in Mewelde Moore (and had Najeh Davenport) as a back-up…and there were plenty of good backs to be had later in the draft.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:44 am
Najeh Davenpoop is the 2nd best sports nickname of all time.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:46 am
This Tracy Porter guy that the Saints picked instead of trading for Jeremy Shockey had better be good. And it’s funny going to the Saints boards and hearing them call Adrian Arrington “Marques Colston II”
April 28th, 2008 at 9:46 am
atl – I’ve taken to just calling him “Deuce”.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:46 am
I’ll fully admit that I took several minutes trying to figure out how to work “Najeh poo the closet” into my post, yes, I am 12 years old.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:47 am
Jay – You really wanted Jeremy Shockey on your team? He looked to be a top TE a few years back, but now he’s just another worthless douce from Da U.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:48 am
@412/Coop – both good ones. He put it on a tee for everyone when he took a crap in someone’s closet…it’s almost too easy.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:52 am
My friends and I go with “The Dump Truck”
I don’t have a problem with the Dixon pick in the 5th. Ben will be around for a long while, but Charlie isn’t exactly “youthful” anymore. This will give Dixon, arguably the best QB in the nation prior to his injury, a solid year to rehab and learn the system before becoming a (hopefully) competent backup.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:57 am
Roeth – Batch is only 33, so he should be useful for at least another 2-3 years. If the Steelers were hell-bent on getting another QB to groom, I wouldn’t have been terribly averse to taking bringing in your boy Anthony Morelli as a UFA. Then again, Brian St. Pierre has been around a few years and would seem to be the ideal #3 if here patient enough to sit.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:57 am
dixon will be garbage as an nfl qb.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:00 am
412 – If Morelli can’t read a college defense or elude any defenders, how the heck is he going to survive in the NFL?
Blazers – I’m not saying he’s going to be an all-pro, but I think he can be a serviceable backup. Plus, with our line, if Ben gets hurt we’re going to need someone who can run for their life.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:04 am
I guess I just think spending a pick on a QB when so many other positions had greater need strikes me as foolish. The offensive line is going to be a holy hell cluster. Was there really no one on the board who could help them at that spot?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:04 am
412–I did and didn’t want Shockey. I’m not sold on him as a whole, but is he worth they guy they picked with the draft pick the Giants wanted? You never know right now, but a lot of people project Tracy Porter to be a nickel back. So, Jeremy Shockey for a potential nickel back? Why not?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:06 am
The World Champion New York Football Giants come in with another intreaguing Draft plus they get to keep 4 time Pro Bowl TE Jeremey Shockey, who has transformed himself into a big time blocker to go along with his reciving abilities, is loved by his teamates and contrary to some opinion (412) in not a douce from da U…if he was a Steeler you would love this guy. Job Well done…I watched the draft at the Swim up bar at the beaches resort in Turks and Caicos…which is pretty much the best place to watch the draft..I strongly recommend it.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:07 am
/takes bow
April 28th, 2008 at 10:09 am
RWH – No, I definitely would not want Shockey on my team. And, if I were a Giants fan I would rather see Kevin Boss as my primary TE.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:09 am
Mike NYC – How do you do it? You, my friend, are nothing short of awesome.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:14 am
Roman…has shockey improved his not-getting-hurt-and-missing-serious-chunks-of-the-season abilities yet?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:16 am
I still do no regret going out and having fun Saturday instead of watching the draft. I didn’t even watch the DVR recording, except to hear what people were saying about the second-round pick. And I don’t have have a beef with ESPN giving away the picks (if you can believe it). Isn’t it, like, their job to report? And don’t they have to compete with NFL-N for viewers now?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:19 am
just once, i would love for someone to give berman the wrong pick.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Enough about Shockey it’s all a misconception…He doesn’t miss chunks of seasons, he plays hurt…Kevin Boss couldn’t block you guys none the less NFL LB’s and D-Lineman…he plays hard and he is LOVED by his teamamtes..the fans don’t have this loving relationship with him anymore…lots of people equated Shockey’s injury to winning the Super Bowl which was shit…the World Champs won because the team played Defense…in big spots made big defensive plays…the offense played the same way and put up the same points…Super Bowl MVP Eli didn’t throw picks…that was a the difference..Shockey has nothing to do with it..watch the games..watch the man…whoever thinks the World Champion New York Football Giants are better without Shockey is lost and doesn’t know football and only reads newspaper articles and watches ESPN people talk about it.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:31 am
The always effective “if you don’t agree with me you’re stupid” tact.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:32 am
@412: It’s one of my favorite internet memes.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:34 am
Remember when all the Giants were waving at Shockey to stop moping and come down from the luxury box and help cheer from the bench?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:35 am
Roman…youre right about the misconception of shockey missing time. but his receiving stats are fucking awful. yea, he’s a good blocker, but someone who fancies themselves as one of the elite TE’s in the game shouldn’t watch their numbers decline since their rookie year. he’s gotten progressively worse each season, and while i know you cant base everything off of stats, they’re still pretty shitty.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:43 am
I feel like I let the Draft down but to be fair, if Rivers was available at 31 the Giants are taking him over Phillips. I should have taken that Ark St safety just to get position right as well.
As for Shockey, as a man who has watched all of his game on TV or in person, he has an annoying habit of dropping an easy pass 2 out of 3 games which just frustrates the hell out of me but he is a very good to sometimes great TE and I am glad Reese did not trade him just to trade him. Clayton at ESPN is an idiot for thinking a disgruntled Shockey is bad for the Giants, he has been disgruntled his whole career.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:50 am
412…well when your arguement is he is a douce from DA U, my suggestion is to watch the guy actually play instead of basing your opinion of him on other things…if he was playing the way he plays here in Pittsburgh his dick would be sucked nationwide (NFL is the only sports league where the NY athlete is not “genuflected” too and is downplayed and mocked) Spencer, the difference is Tom Coughlin…when Shockey played for Fassel and Sean Payton they split him wide…they played him off the line, he never blocked or cared to block, under TC, his primary job was to block and he played on the line in a 3 point stance…he had to take out a DE or a LB before running his route and all of his routes were in the middle of the field and in coverage…that brings less catches…you drop more balls with two guys on you and Manning’s use for him as a saftey valve only evolved in the last season and a half and he was playing his best with Eli before he broke his leg. The guy did not want to be this type of TE, but he did it and sucked it up because he wants to win…the only thing anybody thinks about is the 2002 playoffs when Shockey is celbrating on the sideline and then dropped the TD pass…its unfair..he was 22…he has matured and he is important to this team…Kevin Boss will never start and only be a receiving TE used on passing downs..they had Michael Matthews playing the bulk of downs after Shockey went down because he blocks…since he can’t block he takes away a decoy threat…that is what I mean..I am not challenging your intelligence..I am challanging what you know about Shockey and the Dynamic he plays in the Giant offense and on the team. Eli called for him to be back twice in the last 10 days…he could have said nothing…I am glad he is on the team…it’s a better team with him here.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:52 am
roeth—-imo he is garbage. his skills do not equate well to the nfl. he is a like a generic mike vick
April 28th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Roman…good explanation. ill plead ignorance on my part seeing as i dont see too many giants games, tho i did throw in that handy disclaimer of ’stats arent everything.’
April 28th, 2008 at 11:03 am
Looks like I missed a little. It all came down to “is the price right?” on whether I wanted him or not. And it sounds like it was close. Personally I thought he is a little overrated (which will now bring on some wrath I’m sure). I think he benefits from being a camera magnet who plays in a conference that had maybe one other TE comparable to him. But if he played in the AFC, he would have never made a Pro Bowl over Gonzalez or Gates (or Clark).
April 28th, 2008 at 11:04 am
412 is a bitch
what?
April 28th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Elipses Man is back!! RWH… we missed you…
April 28th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Jay…don’t forget Lt. Winslow in that group of AFC TE’s.
/rampant homerism
April 28th, 2008 at 11:10 am
Awesome. Irishmafia never disappoints.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:25 am
Jay…Slightly overrated is fine…he would have helped the Saints…I am happy to have him on the Giants though..and Price is Right definitely worked both ways here…The Saints should have tried to move up like the Jets did to 30 to get the TE from Purdue, I think he could be a player, but they gave up some picks to move up to 7 so you can’t blame them.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:27 am
The Giants are far more likely to win again if Jeremy Shockey is watching from the press box. The guy simply is not any good at this point in his career, doesn’t understand the team concept, and is far better suited to watching football surrounded by lots of alcohol and his douchy friends (he’s from Da U…go figure).
Spence – What did you think of your boy Henne going to the Dolphins?
April 28th, 2008 at 11:53 am
Peter King, today’s MMQB –
“Len has always been appointment reading for me, the most important NFL beat guy for me to keep up with every day. No one in our business works harder and writes as often and as coherently. I know it’s killing him to not be working now. But if you’re reading this, Lenny, I’ve got some sage advice for you: The NFL will still be here when you get back. And one other thing: You’re missed. Seriously missed.”
Doesn’t Florio beat this guy to shreds on a regular basis? What has “Lenny” done in the past three years besides pimp his agent friends? King occasionally disappoints me, this is another time.
April 28th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
I’m not particularly a fan of Len P either, but King is actually a colleague and friend of the man’s, so I would expect him to value him somewhat more highly than the rest of us.
April 28th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
Wow. Close one. Well, Sedrick isn’t a Patriot, but I’m happy with the Pats draft. A LB at a lower cost than #7, a second for a third, and a few young guys who will compete for jobs.
It’s going to be a tough team for those guys to make, though.
