So What the Heck is Wrong with the Sports Media?
Media Gossip/Musings April 29th. 2008, 4:30pm
The Bob Costas “State of the Sports Media” event we mentioned last month? It’s happening tonight. Costas – you may recall his blogger-bashing interview we found in the Miami Herald last month – has broken the event into five topics: Sports talk radio, blogs/internet, TV’s impact, athletes and the media, and race. Conspicuously absent? Newspapers. What, they’re not even worthy of discussion? Heck, that’s where bloggers get all their material from, right?
Perhaps more odd: He’s going to have a few newspaper guys front and center – Mitch Albom (talking about radio, for what reason, we’re not sure; his radio show has little or nothing to do with sports), Jason Whitlock, Michael Wilbon, and Jay Mariotti. But the weirdest participant has to be Braylon Edwards. Do he and Costas share the same agent or something? We could probably look that up, but it’s late in the day.
If you don’t have HBO or would rather watch the two Office reruns on TBS or the Spurs/Suns game, fear not. We’ll have a recap tomorrow.
(This photo? Costas and a couple Backstreet Boys.)

Even if I had HBO, I would still watch the office reruns on tbs. Sidenote, I have all three seasons on the office on dvd and would still rather watch reruns than this. I’ll get what I need out of the TBL recap tomorrow.

Also, what’s the deal with Ovaltine?
April 29th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Is it bad that I immediately knew that the other two were in the Backstreet Boys?
April 29th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
@fetch – No. It’s cool.
April 29th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
jay mariotti has no business being there.. why isnt TBL or will leitch there? how about some other newspaper guys like le batard.. ugh.. it already seems like this was set up to favor costas’s argument..
April 29th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
4 NBA games on tonight. Great night for hoops. 3 teams looking to close out
April 29th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Cortes..from what I read Leitch is there…It was in Neil Best’s WatchDog blog…
April 29th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Cortes, I think if Leitch was there, he may be considered mainstream media. And I think Costa, Mariotti, et al want to avoid that.
April 29th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Ugh, Jay Mariotti? I thought Costas was a “serious” journalist. Why would he have the biggest hack in sports media on his show?
In other news, Backstreet’s back ALRIGHT!!!
April 29th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
Thanks Roman. That’s what I meant to say.
April 29th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
TBL – were you invited? or did you not get past the metal detectors?
April 29th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
thanks guys.. didnt know leitch was there.. good 2 hear
April 29th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
oh no sportsgal. No backstreet
April 29th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
Are you kidding me? I’m still a non-factor in the game, man. I just hope Will survives Costas and the sharks … who will be looking for blood.
April 29th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
This sounds very pretentious.
April 29th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
@Clown: (Bump. Set.) Why, what on earth could TBL be trying to smuggle in?
April 29th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
@ Clown
And what’s the deal with cancer?
April 29th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
Only two of those guys are Backstreet Boys??? Who’s the boy bander in the middle?
April 29th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
Everybody…rock your body…
April 29th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
“Heck, that’s where bloggers get all their material from, right?”
No.
April 29th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
John Awesome = Mike NYC ?
April 29th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
TBL got 99 problems but a Bob Costas forum ain’t one…
April 29th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
Maj, your need to be the smartest person in the room is…off putting.
April 29th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
@irish – I couldn’t help it… I grew up in the age of Boy Bands! Don’t even get me started on NSync. I guarantee I could take Guinessgirl in a boy band-off.
April 29th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
Well, at least Norm Chad will be on so there will be at least some humor.
This thing has all the makings of an overblown, puffmyinflatedego crapfest.
April 29th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
/fixed
April 29th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
@sportsgal- i spit up water on my keyboard when you said that. lol
April 29th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
I just hope Will Leitch doesn’t ruin this for the rest of us.
April 29th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Maj has been on Blog Show, which is huh-uuuuge in the DC metro area. (4000 views!!!!!1!1)
April 29th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
From our boy Ken Tremendous:
I will appear on a segment of HBO’s “Costas Now” tonight. Subject matter: Is Miley Cyrus too young for that Vanity Fair picture? Or “Bloggers and Sports Media.” They interviewed me for both and haven’t told me which one I’m in.
There is also a live panel (of which I am not a part) with Will Leitch, Buzz Bissinger, and of course Braylon Edwards.
HBO. Sometime tonight.
April 29th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
i just hope leitch ditched the emo bangs
April 29th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
@CRM – at least if TBL was there, he could shut the panel up by flashing his guns!
April 29th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Irish, if you ask TBL reeeal nice, I’m sure he wouldn’t mind sending you the server logs to compare the IPs of Mike to every other “new” poster. If he was extra smart, he started posting a couple of days ago to throw you off his scent.
April 29th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
I’m fairly certain that Maj is Mike Florio. So lets just assume that’s settled.
April 29th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
@sportsgal – it’s the state of the sports media, not a world’s strongest freelancer competition.
April 29th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
I think Mike NYC will honor his bet.
He wont come on for a month, even though he’ll probably want to “defend himself” after 412 and PurdueMatt tell everyone that he has a small penis.
April 29th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
When did Bob Costas become like a speaker of the house type?
April 29th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
Costas has lost a lot of credibility with me. I care more about the game tonight…..and the re-runs of the office.
April 29th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
Did something happen in Ballin today involving irish, Mike NYC and a small penis?
April 29th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Cuz, I couldn’t have said it better myself. Although I’m not a blogger, let’s hope he doesn’t blow it. Why is Will Leitch there anyway? Every article on Deadspin is satire. No?
April 29th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
@Sportsgal: When doesn’t it?
April 29th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
Mike NYC…the Democratic Party is the greatest party…Barack Obama is going to be a strong and sensible President. The Yankees are a terrible basball team. Magglio Merkin is always right…Irish owns you. HA! Talk now banned boy!
April 29th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
@sportsgal: Mike NYC’s small penis lost a bet to Irish’s small penis over who would win Toronto or Orlando. Toronto lost, Mike’s gone for a month and 412 and PurdueMatt have to go to YoungRepublican meetings wihtout him. This all happens after hours at The Big Lead after dark.
April 29th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
+1…RWH
April 29th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
For some reason (i’m the only one at the office today) I watched that entire clip from some blog show that clown posted above. If you skip to about the 5:00 minute mark there is a chick posing with Kareem that has some of the most tremendous biscuits I have seen in quite some time.
April 29th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
Hef, I think you missed something about a blumpkin in there.
April 29th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
It’s a good thing I’m not into the NBA, I definitely couldn’t hang in the Ballin thread. Sounds like it gets brutal over there with all the betting and small penis accusations.
April 29th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
Costas: “Who we got to discuss the landscape of sports talk radio?”
Producer: “Jay Mariotti is available.”
Costas: “Gold. Everyone loves him. What about sports television?”
Producer: “Hmmm, Joe Buck?”
Costas: “Now you’re talkin’. And the mom’s basement segment?”
Producer: “I really hate you.”
April 29th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Arkbadger- That is Denise Milani. You are welcome
April 29th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
I can see Costas or Tirico(yes, he’ll be there, too) pulling an E:60-type of attack on Leitch. I hope he wears a flak jacket…
April 29th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
The wild card in this motherfucker…Michael Strahan…he could suck, he could be gold…I think he will be happy Mike but if there is someone he doesn’t like there he will go off…and I guarantee that you will hear about the NY media and how they totally got the World Champion New York Football Giant situation wrong…oh..yes..I wrote that whole thing to write the name of my team and the title that they one…I am a whore.
April 29th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
But a funny whore.
April 30th, 2008 at 8:57 am
Okay so last night happened. Did anyone watch it? I only watched the first two segments, but segment two happened to be about us. Well “us” as in bloggers. On the speaking panel was Leitch (pro-blog), Buzz Bissinger (anti-blog), and Braylon Edwards (pro-football…or something). I’ll be honest with you, if I was an outsider looking in and I was unfamiliar with blogs as sports news medium, I would have said that Bissinger won the argument and Leitch made us all seem like a bunch of childish morons.
I realize that Deadspin is the most-read sports blog out there, but there has to be some perspective there. Confusing Deadspin as a legitimate source of sports news is just wrong. And I would assume that the comments that follow each posting aren’t meant to be taken all that seriously. And yet Bissinger grouped us all (by “all” I mean sports bloggers) together as a bunch of morons who can’t get our point across without using profanity, if we had a point at all to begin with. First of all, Bissinger can go fuck himself (smiley). Second of all, that’s an awfully large brush he’s painting with.
I think we all would have been better served if a different blogger was on that panel. Maybe someong from the Mariners blog. Or A’s Nation. Or the Mets. Or Baseball Prospectus. Having Leitch was cherry-picking IMO. I like Deadspin, but it’s more of a tabloid than anything.
