I don’t think that going on the cover is a jinx. It’s more that SI jumps on when somebody is at their peak, and there is nowhere to go but down.

Exactly. How would this be considered a jinx? If they don’t win the WS? Don’t make the playoffs? Those are very and somewhat likely, respectively, SI cover or not.
