L’Affaire Benson: The Booking Video Surfaces
Courts, Legal, NFL May 9th. 2008, 2:30pm
And doesn’t really tell us much, other than Benson looks like a man who has been beaten down, perhaps physically and mentally. Here’s why we’re fascinated by this story – so many athletes these days are racking up the arrests that it has become automatic to simply finger them as guilty as soon as the news hits the wires. Something feels different about this Benson case, though. (Unlike, say, the Marvin Harrison situation.) And it’s more than just a second witness – from another boat – coming forward to say the police manhandled the Bears running back. “He said, ‘I am fine, I can continue walking,’ and they put their legs behind his knees and knocked him over his knees and started hog-carrying him … It was uncalled for, it was ludicrous, no point for it.”

The cop that maced him probably had Benson on his fantasy team last year.
May 9th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
i saw the video earlier this morning and have no idea why the cops released it. there’s nothing in the video. however, is this some sort of CYA by the police? maybe he was roughed up by a rogue cop and the rest of the time he was treated fairly, almost like the cops are trying to lessen the blow of a lawsuit.
strange.

that’s the post of the day!!! ROTFLMAO!!!
May 9th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
this story is getting crazy. at first, i was very skeptical of CB telling the truth. but these witnesses make me believe that they probably treated him like shit. the guy on the other boat was icing on the cake for me.
May 9th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
I think there is probably a little bit of truth on both sides, but I think the cops probably were overly aggressive.
May 9th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
I love how the lake police are sticking by ‘he was being cocky and smelled like alcohol’ as the justification for macing the guy… by that measure they should mace that least 2/3 of NYC residents.
May 9th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Of course there was a point to it. If the cops had seen Benson on the gridiron they knew he couldn’t move more than a few yards at at time. They were just trying to move things along.
May 9th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Benson’s lucky that they were ONLY Boat Cops…
Street-Land cops probably would’ve killed him
Boat Cops don’t have the authority to kill African-Americans yet
May 9th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
I will say this — I was on a boat two summers ago partying and had a VERY similar series of events unfold. My friend, the owner of the boat, ended up being arrested for BWI. He was drinking but he was not drunk by any stretch of the imagination, and they never gave him a breathalizer or blood tests.
The officers were Park Police. They were incredible A-holes. Coming from an area of the world where they are common… these guys are often the people who couldn’t make state or local police. They have a chip on their shoulder.
They treated my friend like he was worthless, and this situation sounds EXACTLY like that (The Lower Colorado River Authority?).
I come from a family with police roots, so I’m not anti-cop.

i had him on my fantasy team last year. Traded him for Marion Barber so i was happy in the end
Benson should be happy this didnt happen in Chicago. His mother would of got beat up instead by the police
May 9th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
they didn’t need to take his legs out…they could’ve just breathed on him.
May 9th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
“i saw the video earlier this morning and have no idea why the cops released it.”
It’s public information. Media probably requested it and the police had to release it.

Street-Land cops shot Biggie.
May 9th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
@sd… I’m with you on that
And I have Lawyers/judicial officers as well as cops/detectives in my family… I have a HUGH Family structure due to my Grandparents siblings and children

Irish what dumbass traded Marion Barber to you for Cedric Benson?
Please tell me they finished in last.
May 9th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
“Irish what dumbass traded Marion Barber to you for Cedric Benson?”
Probably the same guy that would draft Braylon Edwards in the 1st round. I need to be in the same league as that guy.
May 9th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
@CRM: I thought the LA Times said that Kid ‘n Play killed his Royal Biggieness?

@cbh- that dumbass would be my co worker. Same guy who traded away Marshawn Lynch for Kenny Watson after Rudi Johnson got hurt.
May 9th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Did that guy win a single game? You just named two of the dumbest trades I have ever heard in the history of fantasy football.
May 9th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Name Change Alert: Same great taste but an even longer name. Gravatar will change, but don’t want to shock Hef and Irish’s systems all at once.
On topic: Kenny Watson’s legs, and Derek Anderson’s shitt throws, knocked the Browns out of a playoff spot.
May 9th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
@nomo: keep in mind this is a probationary period. 3 weeks from now, you may be forced to change back.
May 9th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Do you know what its like falling in the mud and getting kicked, in the head. With an iron boot? Of course you don’t, no one does, that never happens. Sorry Ted, that’s a dumb question.
May 9th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
The Browns play the NFC East this year – that’s 3 losses right there. No playoffs this year, sorry Romeo.
May 9th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
“Same guy who traded away Marshawn Lynch for Kenny Watson after Rudi Johnson got hurt.” Irish
I just got done taking a few pulls off my corpse head bong and I even think that is stupid. Not even funny, giggly stupid. Just plain dumb.
May 9th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
Nick, you of all people, should love the name.
May 9th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
all this fantasy talk is bringing back nightmares:
andre johnson
travis henry
stephen jackson
these were just 3 of the season long injuries or dumbasses that littered my team into last place after the first two weeks. I was rolling with 100 point victories until week 3, and never won another games. At one point I actually has to start Devin Hester, Ted Ginn and Bernard Berrian at receiver.
May 9th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Damn, after that 2-0 start, the fall from grace must have been hard to swallow.
May 9th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
@nick – ok, ok maybe 2-0 isn’t to great. probably wouldn’t have been so bad had I not already beaten the teams that had brady, moss, AP and LT. The rest of the schedule was cake. I got beat by vince young one week, lost by .17 points one week, and then had to watch peyton manning and dallas clark rest the last 3 weeks.
May 9th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
2/3? Come on, man … 9/10 is more like it.
May 9th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Ced should have said he was Marion Barber and the cops would have released him with a warning
May 9th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
412…what does and out of context message from 3 days ago have to do with Cedric Benson?
May 9th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
TBL +1
whats probably most disturbing is that in most cases cops will get away with this. Benson happens to be high profile and once it hit the news other boaters on different boats in the area were probably more likely to come forward. its unfortunate that the guilty until proven innocent perception is more obvious than ever. i am not trying to hate on cops either, becuase it’s a very dangerous and unpredictable job, but most people, save those on heroin, are going to give respect when treated with respect and I think that is forgotten a lot.
May 9th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
Story definitely sounds fishy. Especially with the new witness.
