LOST: ‘Destiny is a Fickle Bitch’
Television May 9th. 2008, 9:00am
First and foremost, right now, you need to go to your calendar and clear off any plans for May 15th. The Office is a one-hour season finale, and then Lost follows. We couldn’t be more excited. In the immortal words of David Aames in Vanilla Sky (oh yeah, we’re going there): “I don’t care if God calls, I’m busy!” Here’s something from last night’s episode that probably won’t have an impact on the show, but is so damn cool – on the Easter Eggs site, they have a screengrab of Locke’s high school locker. In it, there’s the album cover of a band. For kicks, we googled the band. Naturally, they have been mentioned several times on the show. And who knows, in the end, there’s probably some larger meaning. The sci-fi geek in us completely loves this. We can’t recall another show like Lost, ever. Onward, to the SPOILERS …
This is going to be more of a ramble than anything, and yes, we were taking notes because we’re nerdy like that …
* First, the biggie: So is Claire dead? This would be a crushing blow, since we love her and that accent. Reasons she likely is dead: She’s hanging out with Christian (who’s definitely dead) in Jacob’s cabin. She’s wearing a creepy grin. She has a mark on her head like the one she had when the rocket hit her house two weeks ago. Reasons she’s not: None, mostly it’s just hope.
* As floated by a commenter on the Easter Eggs site: Why has Christian, a dead man, been dressed differently in the last two weeks?
* Daniels from the Wire has now seen Hurley and Locke. Plus, he’s the one who gave the order to Naomi. We have no idea how the hell this guy ties in to the show. Is he on Ben’s side, or Widmore’s side?
* Who wants to tie these items together: Sand in the glass, the watch, and the comic book? And Young Locke picked up the knife on purpose, right? There were two other connections to the knife that we could think of – when Daniels from the Wire said you need to go on the “Walkabout” with a knife and your wits; and also when Locke threw that knife at Naomi to kill her. Hmmm.
* Scarier moment: When Claire appeared in the cabin, or when the camera flashed to Young Locke’s drawing of the Smokey thing killing someone?
* Regarding death – is the deal that you can die on the island, but not off of it? Because when that thug pulled the trigger at Michael’s head twice, that was our first thought. And they seemed to make a big deal out of that guy’s gun “being broken” on at least three occasions, which leads us to believe it wasn’t broken in the first place (remember, he checked the bullets).
* “We’re going to move the island.” Hmmm. Jacob’s house seems to move, right? We got nothing. And you’re far more perceptive than we are.

Claire has to be dead. I thought it was ludicrous, even by Lost standards, that she would survive that house blast. Somehow, she became dead but undead like her pops. I have no idea what her role in the larger scheme of things is.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:06 am
Agree. Cheap way for her to die (though not as weak as the death of Josh Brolin in No Country). Waiting for EW to post a recap …
May 9th, 2008 at 9:06 am
Alpert was trying to guide young Locke’s path so that he could be of use to them in the future, right. He gets him into that science camp in the summer. He’s upset that he can’t seem to fix locke’s need to be liked and to be strong and/or powerful. So he’s upset that even young locke picks up the knife and not the mystery comic (fighting vs. thinking).
May 9th, 2008 at 9:08 am
I didn’t quite understand the purpose behind the whole “Groundhog Day” encounter between Locke and Horace. Yes, I know it was a dream, but still.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:09 am
knives have been locke’s thing since the first episode… remember that suitcase full of knives he had?
May 9th, 2008 at 9:09 am
Hef/Jew – I thought he was supposed to pick the sand. I’m assuming it was from the island (i.e., his destiny?).
May 9th, 2008 at 9:09 am
They aren’t moving the island physically. All that magnetic mumbo jumbo could be used to move the island coordinates so that Widmore couldn’t have a correct bearing anymore. Make a compass go crazy and it’s effectively moved.
Just a guess.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:11 am
@kfc: Maybe that’s why they went into the past to try and “fix” him. So that he wouldn’t mess with knives and instead be of a different use to the island.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:11 am
i think the “groundhog day” thing goes with the theory that this has all happened before.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:12 am
@roeth: Yeah, he was supposed to get the sand and the comic and the compass. Sciency things.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:12 am
What I’m wondering right now is how is this somehow going to come into line with Desmond’s vision. He had a vision of Claire being taken off of the island on a helicopter… which would be hard to do if she’s dead, right?
May 9th, 2008 at 9:13 am
@jewby – perhaps your on to something. alpert doesn’t want locke to have a knife, but agamemnon or whatever his name is (dude form the wire, as i have been told) does want him to have one.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:14 am
was it claire or the baby who desmond saw getting off the island?
May 9th, 2008 at 9:16 am
btw, at first i thought that comic was the one walt had in the first season with the polar bear. but that was in spanish, right?
May 9th, 2008 at 9:16 am
I think there are still two separate teams at work here: Ben’s team of people, and Widmore’s team. Both are trying to influence the future to turn out how they want it. The tall physical therapist guy is a Widmore guy, he also was trying to find out info from Hurley.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:17 am
it was claire holding the baby. i really hope she is not dead.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:18 am
So Widmore wants Locke to turn into one thing, and Ben/Richard want Locke to turn into something else.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:21 am
The next question I have is this: which side is Christian playing on? He is obviously a part in this. He played a part in Jack’s, Sawyer’s, Ana Lucia’s, and Claire’s lives… somehow influencing them all to be on that flight which, in turn, had them all end up on the island together. I’m confused.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:24 am
What’s funny is that none of those peopel were “chosen” according to Ben’s list but they’re all related to Christian somehow.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:25 am
So they must all be on Widmore’s “list” then… I’m in the zone right now.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:25 am
josh Brolin dies in No country? thanks for the spoiler alert!
May 9th, 2008 at 9:28 am
Haha… No Country was awesome for all but the last 5 minutes. I almost expected a Coen Bro’s movie to have the weirdest ending possible, and that was definitely it. I’m not mad about it, better than being predictable.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:32 am
I loved Ben last night with that deer in the headlights look the whole time…and the “Destiny, John, is a fickle bitch!” quote was the best. What a great freaking show. That Keeme (sp) guy is pretty psychotic.
Did they go into the past, though? I thought that was just a traditional flashback? I thought that they couldn’t go into the past and change things for different future outcomes because of the whole “course correction” thing. But I could be wrong.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:34 am
i thought the scene with Hurley and Ben eating the candy bar was spoooooky.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:35 am
Of course they went there. It’s only a flashback if it’s not island related. If a guy from the island shows up in a flashback and makes you an offer, then it’s a change of some kind.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:36 am
@benji: I’m glad they left it in. It was great.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:36 am
I think Claire is dead because did you notice how “clean” she looked? Her hair is all nice and she just looks very comfy and happy.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:40 am
What a confusing episode. My god.
As for Claire, god I wish she would die. She is powerfully annoying. She is so one dimensional. Just wandering around saying WHERES MY BABAY?!?! She has no role on the show at all, or hasn’t up until this point. I guess she is Jack’s step sister or whatever, but bah, couldn’t care less about her until proven otherwise.
The Richard Alpert stuff was the most interesting aspect of this to me. Clearly he is either able to travel through time, or he is Yoda and doesn’t age. Dude has been looking dapper for like 60 years now.
It was clear it was Christian in the cabin last time Locke or Hurley (can’t remember which one) peeked into it. And yeah, I agree with fluffy bunny feet (lol, great name), that by moving the island they probably mean messing with the coordinates again via however they do that.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:44 am
“Daniels” has got to be the creepiest guy on TV. That broken vessel in his right eye is freaky. Can’t believe McNulty had the balls to cross him.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:44 am
It looked to me like Locke was supposed to take the sand, watch/compass, and the Book of Laws (the camera kept focusing on it). This seems to fit b/c a normal kid would take the baseball glove, knife, and comic book; not the sand, watch/compass, and book. I don’t think he was supposed to take the comic book.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:48 am
Nice point birdman. I agree.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:51 am
Going back to my comment in an earlier post. The boat receives the communication from Faraday, indicating that the boat is behind the island, timewise. However, the doctor is not dead yet, which indicates that they are ahead of them?
Huh?
May 9th, 2008 at 9:52 am
In my opinion, Locke is somewhat of the chosen one that is destined to take the island in one of two directions. Richard wants him for the island if he is a good man that will “help” the island (that is why it was so important that he take the Book of Laws over the knife). Abbadon (Daniels from the wire) wants him for evil purposes, i.e. go on a walk around with nothing but a knife. I believe that Richard is good and Abbadon is evil and Locke could be the swaying force that either saves or destroys the island (big nerd alert–kind of like Luke Skywalker in Star Wars).
May 9th, 2008 at 9:53 am
Jay: Oh yeah! Totally forgot about that. wtf was that all about.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:54 am
nope, good reminder!
May 9th, 2008 at 9:54 am
What the fuck happened to Ben’s daughter? If the boat thugs captured her, then why didn’t they bring her back to the boat?
May 9th, 2008 at 9:55 am
If anyone has bought a LCD TV recently, check and see if it has a built-in digital ATSC tuner. this way you can pick up free HD channels that have a better picture than the HD channels that the cable companies provide
May 9th, 2008 at 9:55 am
Jay: Although, on that note, there was that weird 17 minute delay or whatever when Faraday was synching up with the boat from the island before. It has happened before.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:56 am
Yeah but if you look back on it, Ben knows from the beginning that Locke isn’t going to be the “science” guy they want, he’s instead the “knife” guy. Richard continues to have hope that maybe he is their man, but Ben always seems to know he’s going to bring them down eventually. I.E: When he shoots Locke and leaves him for dead… he was obviously trying to change something.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:56 am
@pki: They shot her before Ben “summonned” the Smoke Monster.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:57 am
Oh yeah. I have to stop drinking when I watch that show.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:58 am
next week starts season finale. 1 hour next week, then a week off, then 2 hours the following week.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:59 am
Ben’s daughter was shot last week.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:59 am
Two weeks ago actually.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:00 am
Why are you nerds not more concerned with the fact that the dude who saw Locke at the hospital is the same guy who recruited Juliette for the island 50+ years later? His appearance could explain why Christian is still “alive.”
I seriously cannot wait until this show is off the air. I’m getting so fucking tired of the people answering questions with “that’s not important right now.”
May 9th, 2008 at 10:03 am
Sportsgal, c’mon… you have to be patient. I am just glad I get new stuff to contemplate every week… I’m going to be very sad when it’s done.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:05 am
I’m just excited to see Walt come back. They couldn’t have been giving us all that “Walt is special” stuff from the first couple of seasons for no reason. Locke is going to be one side, and Walt will be the other… good vs. evil. This is going to be awesome.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:05 am
sportsgal: I agree with both of your points.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:06 am
@Sportsgal – I feel ya…I don’t necessarily agree, but I see where you’re coming from. It can be very frustrating. I think, though, that it’s different than many shows because it has a definite and exact ending point, so they know how long they can ride out some of these questions. Whereas with other shows, they don’t know if they’ll make it to another season, so they always have to answer questions here and there to keep people hooked and provide some semblance of resolution.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:07 am
yeah sportsgal, enjoy the ride, man
May 9th, 2008 at 10:07 am
Claire dead? I don’t know, how was she carrying the baby around when walking with Ben, Locke, Hurley, and Sawyer? Also, the “Claire has to raise the baby” comment throughout the show, and her with Aaron in the helicopter.
Abadadon (Daniels)/Widmore v. Richard/Ben/Jacob? Which side is good, which side is bad? They seem to continually play with good and evil on lost. Roles that aren’t defined are Locke and Desmond. Still, the island (Jacob?) is mad at Ben, and mad at Jack, evidenced by their sickness.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:11 am
Not sure if anyone has pointed this out, but more evidence that Claire is dead: How Miles (the freighter that can talk to dead people) all of a sudden takes an interest in Claire after the explosion…asking her all kinds of questions. The writers seemed to make a point of that, and I think that means something. He was suspecting that she was dead already. Why else would he take a sudden interest in her, when before he hardly spoke to her (or anyone, for that matter)?
May 9th, 2008 at 10:11 am
@jay – do you think the time-difference thing is because they are in alternate dimensions? the thing they launched to faraday could have taken one bearing and gone to a later time in the island dimension, while the doc’s body could have taken another bearing and gone to an earlier time in the island dimension
May 9th, 2008 at 10:12 am
while electronic communication remains unaffected
May 9th, 2008 at 10:13 am
EW recap finally up BTW
May 9th, 2008 at 10:13 am
@atlsportsfan
Yeah good point that’s exactly why I thought she was dead after that episode too.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:13 am
technically, in the episode “raised by another” the psychic tells claire that the baby “cannot be raised by another”. these words are carefully chosen b/c that is why the baby must be taken off the island. it can’t be raised by “an other”
May 9th, 2008 at 10:16 am
@ KFCeater
That’s sort of what I’m thinking. I’m not sure exactly if it could work, or how to explain it really, but I think there are different forms of the future going on in different dimensions of time. (Does that make any sense?) I mean if you look at some of the episodes, like last week’s, Jack is shirtless and has no scar–yet it’s in the future. Maybe much of these flash-forwards are occurring in an alternate future, the one that occurs originally before Ben, Richard, Christian, Abaddon manipulate it.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:22 am
This is dialogue from last weeks episode, adds fuel to the Claire is dead fire:
Claire: “I’m a bit wobbly, but, uh, I’ll live.”
Miles: “Well, I wouldn’t be too sure about that.”

May 9th, 2008 at 10:26 am
Interesting points OutofB, never thought about the flashfowards being all twisted.
@ Bird…These psychics, who the hell are they (Claire’s/Desmond’s), and how do they know so much.
As for the “others” who really are they? Richard and Jacob appear to be others, but why did Horace (Darhma) have the map to the cabin, rather A cabin. Who is on who’s side, and who is right (good) who is wrong (evil)?
May 9th, 2008 at 10:27 am
I brought this up last week, but I’m pretty sure my hypothesis is correct so I’ll bring it up again. I have watched this show since the day it aired on TV. I didn’t buy the DVDs and get caught up 3 or 4 seasons in. I’ve had to endure the countless unanswered questions FOR FIVE FUCKING YEARS. The only people who are still into this show (the way I was for the first two seasons) are those who got into Lost through the DVDs. There may be exceptions, but I think for the most part I’m right.
outofbounds, this explains why I have no patience for the show. It also explains why I prefer 24 and Heroes to Lost – they provide me with at least some amount of closure. They don’t present ridiculous amounts of questions and then take years to address them.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:29 am
That EW review absolutely sucked…he is getting way too “smart” for his own good. And he clearly knows much more than the normal viewer.
Oh, and Jack did have a scar in the FF:

http://bp0.blogger.com/_Hxnvg45zlCw/SBqQUUi_u0I/AAAAAAAAA5s/7bXNkKv5W_0/s1600-h/jacks+scar.jpg
May 9th, 2008 at 10:32 am
Hey, sportsgal, if you have no patience for the show, and it’s pissing you off, are you going to stop watching? Or will not knowing the final outcome just drive you more crazy?
May 9th, 2008 at 10:33 am
sportsgal – you are truly of the MTV generation. Wait, what were we talking about. Oooh, shiny lights and candy!
May 9th, 2008 at 10:34 am
@ Sportsgal…Season 1, I watched weekly. 2 I tried, but the ridiculous questions got annoying, so I gave up on the show, only to pound out 2 and 3 on DVD. 2 is a necissary evil, I am sorry you had to struggle through it weekly, but there is so much jam packed into every episode now that you can speculate easy for a week. It seems that almost every nuance has a meaning. Heroes, which is good, is just a jumbled mess of action, similar to season 2 of Lost.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:35 am
Sportsgal: I get where you’re coming from. Honestly, about half the people I know that watch the show say exactly what you’re saying, and the other half are obsesses like I am. I have been watching the show since the first episode though, and I’m still obsessed… I think mostly because I’m always figuring out something or a new angle. I’ll admit I want to know what’s going to happen and it’s a little frustrating being constantly confused, but I think I like not knowing.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:35 am
@Sportsgal – count me among the ones that watched from the start. As a result, like I said, I can see where you’re coming from, but I don’t feel that way. I guess I just have faith that the majority of the questions will be resolved by then.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:37 am
Haha, 24. Sportsgal, you’re easily amused, aren’t you?
May 9th, 2008 at 10:41 am
What teams are there…
Abaddon/Widmore v. Richard/Ben/Others v. Horace/Whoever put Darhma there?
And how do our players fit in…
Jack, Kate, Claire, Jocke, Desmond?
May 9th, 2008 at 10:44 am
Heroes has promise but they f*&ed it up with the season 1 finale and the disastrous half season 2.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:48 am
Here’s my whole take – I have nothing else to watch on Thursday’s at 9, so I record Lost. I don’t make it a priority to watch, and it can sit on my TiVo for weeks before I catch up. I think I’m resigned to the fact that the writers will never answer all the questions they’ve written into the show, but because I know there are only 2 more years left, I’ll tape it till it’s done.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:51 am
If Lost wasn’t available online, I probably wouldn’t have seen half of last season or any of this season.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:53 am
By the way, this whole “unanswered question” thing is the same reason why I didn’t enjoy the Sopranos in the last few seasons as much as I did in the beginning.
The writers strike really fucked up season 2 of Heroes.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:54 am
Lost is easily the best show on TV.
So Locke is Jacob theory is a big one now?
May 9th, 2008 at 10:54 am
Interesting theory I ran across. I have no idea if it is true but maybe some of you will remember.
Apparently, Ben’s mom was also named Emily. Could it be that Ben and Locke have the same mother? This would explain why they both are considered “special.”
May 9th, 2008 at 10:56 am
@Die eagles – I think it could be…when EW pointed out how the shadowy figure of Jacob in one of the scenes from a few episodes ago looks somewhat like Locke with more hair, that threw me for a loop…could be some credence to it.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:59 am
i listened to the directors commentary for that episode, and they made a very large point not to reveal too much about the jacob scene. But now that I think about it, “Eyes” are a huge part of the theme of the show. We saw Jacob’s eye last year, and there was a very poinient scene last night where we see Locke’s eye flash open. Not sure if anyone can get a screen grab of that.
This is Jacob’s eye. And so is this. Is that Locke?
May 9th, 2008 at 11:01 am
On Heroes, I agree. The season 1 finale needed to be stretched out about another hour, at least. And season 2 was really screwed up. Season 3 needs to be a blockbuster to keep my interest, I think.
May 9th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Locke could be Jacob, although I’ve never given this theory much thought, it really could work out. When Ben and Locke go to the Cabin, Ben asks Locke if he can see him, and he says no. Ben then says something along the lines of “You don’t see it do you? You aren’t the one” and might be alluding to the fact that Locke was supposed to be Jacob, but he chose a different path. (The wrong one, according to Ben) Maybe in an alternate future, Locke was Jacob… but they can’t figure out how to influence him into following that path again.
May 9th, 2008 at 11:19 am
Locke/Jacob theory is interesting cause the first time they meet is in the Cabin, then the whole place starts shaking and going crazy. The whole time/space two Locke’s in the same place. This Orchid Darhma video show’s everyone freaking out when a time travelling bunny (?) encounters it’s present self.
May 9th, 2008 at 11:23 am
@sportsgal, but its not 24 or heroes… those are of the action-blow ‘em up genre; lost is dense and mysterious. Kinda reminds me of a 19th century novel, it takes time to develop but by the end its well worth it. Furthermore, its a sci-fi mystery and what good mystery (sci-fi or otherwise) doesn’t keep you guessing? To be honest the frustrating questions are what keep you coming back. If it didn’t have that, then it’d be like watching a horror movie w/o any scary parts. Whats the fun in that?
May 9th, 2008 at 11:29 am
Sportsgal- might I suggest decaf?
On “moving the island”, remember a few weeks back, when Ben told Widmore that he would never find the island? Ben is in on it, as is Richard.
May 9th, 2008 at 11:42 am
Yeah, and it’s funny that Ben told Locke earlier in the episode “Nice work John. You made him think it was his idea” about tricking Hurley, when Ben was probably doing the same to Locke in making him think that it was his decision that they were going to move the island.
May 9th, 2008 at 11:47 am
Not sure what caffeine has to do with me being annoyed with the writers for never providing the audience with resolution.
@justin – for me, the analysis was fun back in season one five years ago. With the amount of time I’ve spent watching this show ON TV (instead of spending a few weeknds watching all the episodes on DVD), I think I deserve answers to some questions. I’m frustrated that every time one of the Oceanic people asks a question, it either gets answered with another question or “there’s no time to answer that now.”
May 9th, 2008 at 11:49 am
Sportsgal, that is the greatness of the show. The entertainment is in the question, not in answering them. They answer questions, but raise 3 more. I guess it can’t be as simple as Silar is the bad guy, get him.
May 9th, 2008 at 11:49 am
How did Captian Gault know “Kevin Johnson” was really Michael Dawson? when was that revealed?
May 9th, 2008 at 11:58 am
Sayid turned him in a few episodes ago
May 9th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
Thats right
May 9th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
die_eagles – apparently, you’ve never heard of the word “opinion.” I enjoyed the questions when the show first aired, but now, after five years, I feel that gimic is old. I like Heroes not only because they tie up some (not all) story lines when they start new ones, but also because super heroes are entertaining.
May 9th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Maybe ABC can start airing two episods of ‘Lost’ each week. One for those who deserve answers because they’ve watched weekly from the start, and a ‘regular’second episode for those that caught up on DVD.
All in favor say ‘Aye Brotha’
May 9th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
@ Gal…What I am saying is that your need for gratification is filled. They answer a lot of questions on Lost. They just raise more. Heroes season 2 opened up a whole lot of questions, hardly any of which were answered. Lost has a set timeline, so you know they actually have a vision for the show. Not just lets please all of our viewers.
May 9th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
I can agree with sportsgal, I never saw LOST until halfway thru season 2, saw season 1 on DVD in about 4 days, then bought bootlegs of season 2 to catch up to where the season was at that point. since then I have been severely hooked. I can be patient now, maybe not if I;d watched since season 1 episode 1
May 9th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
Can’t that be said for all TV? If it is newer to you, you will enjoy it more. Like week after week, year after year of Jack Bauer might die, oh wait he saved the day get a little old too.
May 9th, 2008 at 1:05 pm
TBL you should like this, the easter egg site says that before the end of the year, we will know who is in the coffin.
May 9th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
i do think EW has lost it when he compares Lost to No Country and From Hell. Either he’s thinking about it way too much, or he’s right on the creators are about to fuck us over.
May 9th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
I think Locke picked the knife, because, even as a little kid, he didn’t want to be the nerd, he wanted to be “the superhero,” as he said to the teacher/guidance counselor.
Another question: I wonder how long Sayid is going to be stuck on that boat. We have seen LOSTies have issues with watercraft around the island.

Odessa…Picking the knife, yeah he probably likes it, and wants to be a badass, but Richard specifically asked which one already belongs to him, not which one he liked best. The question wasn’t really a choice, but a gauge for who Locke is, not who he wants to be.
