Roy Williams Uncomfortable, Still Overrated
NFL May 9th. 2008, 4:45pm
The Dallas safety doesn’t feel like he “fits” into coach Wade Phillips’ defensive scheme. Greg Ellis said as much on Sirius NFL Radio, which Williams confided in him last summer:
“He said, ‘Greg, this defense does not fit me. I don’t fit in well with this defense at all,’ †the Dallas Morning News’ Web site quoted Ellis as saying. “So when he told me that, I was like, ‘Well, man, it’s still new. Get used to it, and it’ll probably be fine for you.’ And, obviously, I think it came to be true. Just like he said, he doesn’t fit what’s going on here in Dallas right now.’ â€
In addition to Williams’ philisophical differences with the D (or maybe it’s just “physical differences”), Roy has been working out at the team’s training facility in Irving like a good teammate, but he’s been doing it early in the morning before his teammates arrive.
I’m diagnosing it as a case of Adam Archuleta: a safety who is a great athlete, who can hit hard and thrives as a defensive nomad of sorts. But he can’t play in a “scheme”, either by choice or because he just can’t do it (I have my doubts on the latter). Factor in the addition of PacMan Jones on defense to go along with the offensive soap stars and Roy Williams might feel he has enough ammo to request a trade.
The act of calling Williams overrated has gotten darn near overrated, but there is something to it. He made his 5th straight Pro Bowl last season, even though he recorded just two interceptions and zero sacks and forced zero fumbles. Not exactly a good pass defender on the whole, either.
Anyone out there want him?

He takes horrible angles when trying to tackle people. OVERrated. Having him and Ken Hamlin in the same secondary is a recipe for disaster.

This doesn’t make much sense to me. A safety’s main job is to just make sure that no one gets past them. Aside from a blitz or double coverage play, how does a safety really have a scheme?

A safety has jobs and assignments on every play just like all the other defensive players.

why dont they just move him to LB opposite of DeMarcus? you mean to tell me the guy cant gain 10 lbs? plus, as bad a cover safety as he is, he’d be a decent cover LB.
overrated safety or not, he delivers a punch and can stop the run.

He’ll never do what Michael Stonebreaker did.

matt schoebel out ran him to the endzone a few years back. not good to have that on your resume.

His skills would suit him better at LB, the guy can definitely deliver a hit. I’m not convinced he is a great run stopper though, I see guys run right past him cause he takes bad angles all the freakin time.

Plaxico shows you how overrated Williams is everytime the World Champion New York Giants go into lil D.
May 9th, 2008 at 5:05 PM
jmorris…i hear that, but youd have to think his angles would improve if he has much less distance to cover.

That might be true, if I were the Cowboys I would give it a shot.
If not that, then they need to bring in a true free safety, I saw enough of Ken Hamlin when he played for Seattle to know that he is not a great free safety. He can hit hard but I don’t know that he does anything else particularly well, kind of like Roy Williams.

@sparty
NY Giants < Dallas
Actually its Shockey who always played well against Dallas, not so much Plaxico. Plaxico doesn’t do crap against Newman/Henry. Giants got lucky last year, pure and simple. Should have lost against Packers/Cowboys/Patriots. Oh well, even Dilfer got lucky enough to win a Super Bowl, guess the NFL had to give one to Eli.

I wouldn’t say overrated as much as I would say dirty cheap horse collar tackling headhunting piece of shit who is not fast can’t catch a football and can only hit someone if another guy squares him up first.
May 9th, 2008 at 5:27 PM
obit…so the World Champion New York Football Giants got lucky four times in a row? Sad…really really sad…Let me know when Dallas gets another convicted felon in it’s attempts to win a playoff game this century.

hard knocks on HBO will be must-watch TV this year.
Pacman, TO, maybe Chris Henry, Tank J…dear lord it’s gonna be awesome.
May 9th, 2008 at 5:32 PM
yeah RWH. Eli throws a prayer to Tyree that he catches somehow. Plain and simple, Eli got lucky. Score two for the Manning Football League.

But look at all dem pro bowls he’s played in, and jersey sales, he must be GREAT
May 9th, 2008 at 5:35 PM
Roy Williams for Roy Williams (Detroit version)? It could happen.
May 9th, 2008 at 5:35 PM
Yeah..4 straight playoff victorys…lock down defense and taking out the great Owens and the completely overrated Tony Romo…LUCK…keep dreaming…as much good luck as Jessica Simpson brings bad luck…it’s a crock..they were a better team the last 7 games of the season…I will enjoy the ring made possible by the Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning and the World Champion New York Football Giants

Having him and Ken Hamlin in the same secondary is a recipe for disaster.
But hey, they’re two of the NFC’s four Pro Bowl safeties!
May 9th, 2008 at 5:59 PM
If it wasn’t for Mike Alstott getting all those Pro Bowls at “fullback,” Roy Williams would be the most undeserving multi-Pro Bowler in football history. This is the second year in a row that he got it on name alone.

and a horrific tragedy helped
May 9th, 2008 at 6:38 PM
obit,
you obviously haven’t seen the last two regular season games in Dallas. where on the opening drive, Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning has hooked up with Super Bowl winning touchdown making Plaxico Burress deep on post patterns as he burns Roy Williams who is suppose to come over to help on coverage.
May 9th, 2008 at 7:17 PM
Drew Brees threw 5 TDs on Dallas in 2006, and only one of them was on a short pass.
