Top Shelf: Stars Save Face, Avert Sweep
NHL May 15th. 2008, 11:15am
Lee Diekemper, an advocate for hockey cheerleaders, recaps the night in the NHL.
Dallas 3, Detroit 1: The Stars averted franchise embarrassment by preventing a sweep. Mike Modano’s power play goal (set up by Brad Richards) broke the Wings’ nine-game winning streak. It was the Stars’ first lead of the series. Was the win gift wrapped thanks to a couple of controversial interference calls? Don’t get too excited Stars fans. NHL history is not on your side. Plus, the last time Marty Turco won a game in Joe Louis Arena, Henry Ford was busy waxing his new Model-T. Detroit leads series 3-1.

Not one to complain but Holstrom’s goal was not interference. He didn’t even touch Turco. Probably a makeup call from a few other times but that was definitely not interference. Either way, Go Wings! I’d rather win the series in Detroit anyways.

p.s. I’d handle every single one of those Stars girls. Even the one on the right.

I know sportsgal will be pissed about the officiating, which I have to admit, was uneven once again.
Also, I agree with giggy09, it will be more fun to finish the Stars in Detroit anyway.
Prediction for Game 5: Wings 4, Stars 1

Sportsgal’s got a legit beef with that call.

As soon as the officials disallowed the goal, I knew there was no way the Wings could win. This game proved the point I made on Tuesday – the officiating during the playoffs has never been worse.

/fixed.

Those hockey cheerleaders in the pic are pretty busted, no?

@Rex – Nomo is dead to me now that he changed his name. He’d be better off having a Dallas Stars avatar at this point.

Two on the left are fine, on the right not so much

Its games like last night that make me happy that the NHL is on Versus. If the NHL had been marketed and was on ESPN people would think the league is a fraud with the way these games are officiated. Its unreal. I would tell someone to fix it, but Bettman couldn’t care less about the play on the ice.

What’s worse – NHL or NBA officiating?
I think both of overly (and often unfairly) scrutinized, and are likely much better now than they were 20+ years ago. Instant replays, multiple camera angles and detailed breakdowns just magnify the errors they make.
May 15th, 2008 at 11:56 AM
Are general managers or team presidents allowed to file a complaint on officiating to Bettman? At this point, I don’t know how Detroit can go on the ice and think the officials are competent enough to call a fair game. Holmstrom alone is going to second guess himself every time he’s in front of the net as a result of that bogus interference call!!

This is hockey. At least one person has to have a busted up grill. Even the cheerleaders.

The NBA officials are worse. People wonder why road teams absolutely cannot win in the NBA playoffs? Check the officiating.
And sportsgal, I agree, when the first goal was waved off, I knew the Wings were in trouble.
May 15th, 2008 at 12:17 PM
As much as I have complained about the NHL officiating in the playoffs, there is no one as incompetent as an NBA ref. The NBA refs make the NHL refs look efficient and objective.
The whole reason I stopped watching the NBA is that I don’t believe it’s physically possible for a human being to be that incompetent. Ergo, the NBA is fixed.
May 15th, 2008 at 12:29 PM
I think NBA officiating is slightly better (seems less objective), but I think being an NHL ref is actually way tougher physically.
May 15th, 2008 at 12:45 PM
I understand the NHL game is much much quicker than the NBA and these guys do the best they can, but the part I hate is when the officials put the whistle away for long long stretches and then magically there is a penalty with 2 minutes left or in OT.
If we’re going to allow interference and holding, let me know so I won’t get worked up about it.

A bigge rbunch of homers you will never meet. Fine, dandy and upright homers, but homers nonetheless.
On to tonight:
With Philadelphia looking to add Coburn (and drop Parent, I would imagine, although it should be Hatcher) and “mixing” up the lines (moving Richards to center the top line with Briere and Hartnell, demoting Prospal to the second line between Umberger and Knuble and replacing Downie with Thoreson), can Philly steal a game at home?
Maybe. The Pens fell to a very inspired Rangers team in a similar situation in the previous round. However, I would argue that the Rangers played the Pens better than the Flyers have to date. All the talk from Philly about how the Flyers haven’t played a good game yet – poppycock. The Pens are too much for the Flyers. The Pens are controlling play in the neutral zone and preventing the Flyers from establishing a last presence in the Pens’s defensive zone. The fact that Philly has not found a way to respond speaks volumes to me. The Flyers should be dumping the puck in hard and forechecking the youknowwhat out of the Pens on every shift. Fleury has not been tested in this round – the Flyers need to challenge him and make it difficult for Fleury to make the easy saves.
For the Flyers to win tonight, Martin Biron simply has to stop everything. And maybe Upshall should dance with Kennedy again.
So much for the Riley Cote factor in this series. I recall a big deal was made about him prior to the series. All for not.

The Flyers could follow Jesus’ advice OR they could pray for the officials to hose the Pens the way the Wings were hosed last night!

I’m a Flyers fan and I plan on viewing tonite’s game Irish Wake style. If I’m sober at 9:00pm, it’ll be purely a coincidence.
