Football Players and Guns? Works for FSU
College Football, Guns May 16th. 2008, 6:00pm
Aging college football patriarch Bobby Bowden, a man who hasn’t been relevant since Peter Warrick and Laveranues Coles were getting free gear the same season FSU took down Mike Vick in the Sugar Bowl, doesn’t seem to have a problem with his players owning guns. Why might that be surprising? Because one of his players, receiver Preston Parker, was charged with carrying a concealed firearm this week. That’s a felony (though his might be reduced). Sayeth Bowden:
“I hate to say this: But if you are in certain neighborhoods you better have a gun. You have to protect yourself and your family. I really hate to say that but it’s the way things have gotten.”
We’d make a Last Boy Scout reference here, but it’s too obvious. Seriously, Bobby – guns are cool for college athletes? Could this be why FSU joins such storied programs like Notre Dame, Michigan, Miami and Nebraska on the gonna be tuuuurrible list in 2008? Guns don’t kill people. Programs? Possibly.

Bobby speaks the truth. I have no problem with players owning guns, either, as long as the do it within the letter of the law.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the problems at both FSU and Penn St. have come when their coaches are senile. They are both hanging around waiting for the other one to die so they can have the all-time wins record.
